[Hosea Stout Diary] Sund Nov. 28th 1847. Went to council at ten. Today Phelps was to acknowledge to the council that he had lied to Calkins, which he did most scientifically and so very easey that it seemed a pleasure and not a cross.
The council forgave him[.] He thanked them and told them that he would try & do them as good a turn some time. I could not help but admire how good & ready he was at a confession which was in consequence of his practice at that business[.] Prest Young then spoke in favoe of our possition.
