Joseph Smith and associates begin their first day of "Hebrew School." However they receive a message from the teacher they had hired, Doctor Piexotto, that he will not be able to give his first lecture for two days. The school votes to drop Piexotto and to hire a new teacher. Joshua Seixas is hired two days later for "the term of 7 weeks for $320.00" to teach 40 students. Joseph Smith writes of Seixas, "He is highly celebrated as a Hebrew Schollar and proposes to give us sufficient knowledge in the above term of time to read and translate the language." (1)

Hebrew school organized (without Dr. Peixotto). " the translating room (west room in the upper part of the temple), "which was consecrated this morning by prayer, offered up by Father Smith. "Altercation" in the temple over singing school arrangements resolved by choosing committee of six. (2)

The next day he writes, "Spent most of the fore noon in set[t]ling the unple[a]sant feelings that existed in the breast of ElderO Pratt. After much controversy, he confessed his fault and asked the forgiv[e]ness of the whol[e] school and was forgiven by all." (1)

Joseph, Orson, and school members settle Orson's "unpleasant fleeings." "And after much controversy, he confessed his fault for entering into any controversy concerning so small a matter as the sound of a Hebrew letter, and asked the forgiveness of the whole school, and was cheerfully forgiven by all." (2)

William E. McLellin returns from Hudson and reports that he has arranged for a Hebrew scholar (Joshua Seixas) to teach forty students for seven weeks for $320, beginning in two weeks. Hudson: Western Reserve College at Hudson, Summit Co., Ohio, 28 miles south of Kirtland, founded 1826. (2)

Evolution and Mormonism: An internal debate

Charles Darwin
Charles Darwin

Today marks the 150th anniversary of the publication of Charles's Darwin's On the Origin of Species.  It has invoked vigorous discussion about science and the creation in Mormon thought.

In 1930, LDS General Authority B. H. Roberts submitted the copy of a manual he had been assigned to write for adult men of the church containing a chapter attempting to reconcile the scientific understanding of the origin of life to Mormon teachings.  It included a discussion of  "pre-Adamites," human-like beings that lived before Adam and Eve.  It also taught that death had occurred for millions of years before Adam's fall.

Junior apostle Joseph Fielding Smith disagreed .....

[Polygamy] The Article on Marriage is published. Among other information, it states, " we believe that one man should have one wife, and one woman but one husband, except in the case of death, when either is at liberty to marry again." (History of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints 2:247.) (2)

[Polygamy] Aug 17
1835 Doctrine and Covenants Section 101 - Article on Marriage
"According to the custom of all civilized nations, marriage is regulated by laws and ceremonies; therefore we believe that all marriages in this Church of Christ of Latter-day Saints should be solemnized in a public meeting or feast prepared for that purpose, and that the solemnization should be performed by a Presiding High Priest, High Priest, Bishop, Elder or Priest, not even prohibiting those persons who are desirous to get married, of being married by other authority. We believe that it is not right to prohibit members of this Church from marrying out of the Church, ... The clerk of every church should keep a record of all marriages solemnized in his branch. All legal contracts of marriage made before a person is baptized into this Church should be held sacred and fulfilled. Inasmuch as this Church of Christ has been reproached with the crime of fornication and polygamy, we declare that we believe that one man should have one wife, and one woman but one husband, except
in
case of death, when either is at liberty to marry again. (History of the Church, Vol.2, Ch.18, p.247).
Rumors of fornication and polygamy are what prompted this statement on marriage, an attempt to squash these rumors and innuendo. By this time, Joseph Smith either had a sexual relationship, or married, Fanny Alger. Joseph Smith was out of town when this section was sustained, but he started using this section as his marriage guide from September onward. The Article on Marriage was section 101 of the 1835 edition of the D&C. The Community of Christ (formerly RLDS church) has this section in their Doctrine and Covenants to this day. The LDS church kept it in the Nauvoo editions 1844, 1845 and 1846 and in four editions of the Doctrine and Covenants published in England from 1852 to 1869. This monogamy section of the D&C stayed as canonized scripture until 1876 Edition of the D&C, just before the death of Brigham Young, when section 132 was inserted. (3)

[Pratt, Parley Parker] Mission to Pennsylvania, New York, and New England 1835. (1)

[Richards, Willard] Learned of Book of Mormon 1835. (1)

[Richards, Willard] Practiced medicine in Massachusetts before 1835. (1)

[Statehood] August 17, Article on Marriage. Inasmuch as this Church of Christ has been reproached with the crime of fornication and polygamy, we declare that we believe that one man should have one w
ife, and one
woman but one husband, except in case of death, when either is at liberty to marry again. (History of the Church, Vol.2, Ch.18, p.247. Plural marriages, "Spiritual Wives" and rumors of such, including accusation about adultery mixed with secrete marriages, are what prompted the statement on marriage, in an attempt to squash rumors and innuendo. Joseph Smith was conveniently out of town, thus he could be seen as supporting the inclusion of that statement from outsiders, while continuing to spread plural marriage privately to select people for many years to come. The issue of preaching conflicting revelations was avoided by his absence. The Article on Marriage was section 101 of the 1835 edition of the D&C. The RLDS church has maintained this section to this day. The LDS church kept it in the Nauvoo editions 1844, 1845 and 1846. It was not removed until SLC 1876 Edition, just before the Death of Brigham Young, when section 132 was inserted.)
They accuse me of polygamy, and of being a false Prophet, and many other things which I do not now remember; but I am no false Prophet; I am no imposter; I have had no dark revelations; I have no revelations from the devil; I made no revelations; I have got nothing up of myself, The same God that has thus far dictated me and directed me and strengthened me in this work, gave me this revelation and commandment on celestial and plural marriage and the same God commanded me to obey it. He said to me that unless I accepted it and introduced it, and practiced it, I, together with my people, would be damned and cut off from this time hence forth.
And they say if I do so, they will kill me, 0, what shall I do? If I do not practice it, I shall be damned with my people. If I do teach it, and practice it, and urge it, they say they will kill me, and I know they will. But we have got to observe it. It is an eternal principle and was given by way of commandment and not byway of instruction, (Joseph Smith, Contributor 5:259) (4)

[Thayer, Ezra] Membership suspended 1835 for impropriety. Later restored to full fellowship. (1)

[West] Texas revolted against Mexico. (5)

Textual versions of D&C 8 (Rod of Nature Revelation)

Early copy of D&C 8, (Manuscript Revelation Books, April 1829-B)

Shortly after Joseph Smith met Oliver Cowdery, a revelation was received regarding a gift belonging to Oliver Cowdery, referred to as Section 8 of the Doctrine and Covenants (D&C).

Revelations Book 1 (circa 1831) was a handwritten copy of revelations primarily assembled in 1831 by John Whitmer. It contains earlier versions of revelations than published in the Book of Commandments (1833) or the Doctrine and Covenants (1835).

Here is the text of four versions of D&C 8, a revelation with one of the more interesting textual histories.

At home, Joseph orders his horse saddled and he and his scribe (Warren Parrish), ride to E. Jennings, "where I joined Eb[e]nezer Robinson and Angeline Works, in matrimony, according to previous arangements." Angeline, recovering from an illness, is able to sit up in her easy chair during the ceremony. (3)

Joseph and Warren then ride to Mr. McWithey's, about 3 miles from town, where Joseph is to "solemnize the matrimonial covenant" between Mr. E. Webb and Miss E. A. McWithy. A large crowd is present, Joseph speaks 40 minutes and "all seemed to be interested, except one or two individuals, who manifested, a Spirit of groveling contempt, which I was constrained to reprove and rebuke sharply." After closing, he "Sealed the matrimonial cerimony in the name of God, and pronounced the blessings of heaven. upon the heads of the young married couple we then closed by returning thanks." A "sumptuous feast" ensues. Joseph "can only say the that the interview was conducted with propriety and decorum, and our hearts were made to rejoice." Ebenezer Webb, Eliza A. McWithy (3)

Joseph attends church services at the usual time, 10 a.m., in the school house on the flats. Jesse Hitchcock preaches "a verry feeling discourse" in the afternoon. Peter Whitmer and Frederick G. Williams speak of "many things [in] connection with the rise and progress of this church, which were interesting, and the Saints, listened with much attention, after these serv[ic]es closed, the sacrament of the Lords Supper was administered, under the superintendance of President D. Whitmer, who presided over the meeting during the day." Joseph then comments on prayer meetings, and the meeting is closed "by invoking the blessings of heaven." Diary-2, 64-66. (3)

Discussion of History

Some are enjoying the discussion of church history.

Others prefer to receive only the daily church history posts.

If you prefer to avoid discussion, please contact me at
clairvb@gmail.com and I can set you up.

May I also ask that discussion be mutually respectful. While everyone
doesn't see eye to eye, I believe we can all benefit from each others
view points through thoughtful conversation.

Thanks,
Clair
