[Apostle Wilford Woodruff Journal] 8th It is still Cold. I spent the day at home But I met with a congregation of the Citizens in the room over Joseph Store for the purpose of hearing the views of General Joseph Smith given concerning the affairs of Government. His views were written & were read by Wm. W Phelps & were in the highest degree interesting. Gen Smith gave his reasons for permitting his name to go forth as a candidate for the Presidency of the United States which were as follows:

I would not have suffered my name to have been used by my friends on any wise as president of the united States or candidate for that office If I & my friends Could have had the privilege of enjoying our religious & civel rights as American Citizen even those rights which the Constitution guarantee unto all her Citizens alike. But this we as a people have been denied from the beginning. Persecution has rooled upon our heads from time to time from portions of the United States like peels of thunder because of our religion & no portion of the government as yet has steped forward for our relief & under view of these things I feel it to be my right & privilege to obtain what influence & power I Can lawfully in the United States for the protection of injured innocence & If I loose my life in a good Cause I am willing to be sacrificed on the alter of virtue rightousness & truth, in maintaining the laws & constitution of the United States if need be for the general good of mankind.

Many other interesting remarks were made. He was followed by Elders Hide & Taylor, & a vote was taken whether the views of Gen Smith would be maintained by the assembly or not. The vote was universal in the affirmative. (3)

Lyon with whom she is living, and so this is the first acknowledged polyandrous child. As chief justice of Nauvoo, Smith fines two African-Americans $25 and $5 for "trying to marry white women." (6)

[Joseph Smith Diary] Thursday, February 8th 1844 [several lines left blank] Court trial on 2 negroes trying to marry white women. Fined 1, $25.00 and 1, $5.00. Evening had a political Meeting in the assembly room and Br[other] Phelps publicly read my views of the Gen[eral] Government for the first time. Elders Hyde and Taylor made a speech and myself also. Gov. Reynolds of Missouri shoots himself through the head, having written that although he has tried to carry out his duties, he has not been able to escape "the slanders and abuse of my enemies, which has rendered my life a burden to me." Many assume that Reynolds is referring to criticisms of him because he had not been able to return Joseph Smith to Missouri for trial. Mormon History, Feb 6, 1844

-- Feb 6, 1844
[Apostle Wilford Woodruff Journal] 6th I mooved my family & all my effect back to my old place Cornor of Hotchkiss & Durfee street. Had 6 loads in all. It was quite a Cold day. In the evening In company with Mrs Woodruff I attended a party at Elder Taylors house. It was Composed of President Joseph & Hiram Smith & the quorum of the Twelve. We spent an interesting evening. Had a good feast & good feelings. Conversed upon a variety of subjects & went home. (1)

[Brigham Young] --6-- Partook of supper at Brother John Taylor's with Joseph, Hyrum, Sidney and the Twelve and their wives. The Twelve discussed the propriety of establishing a moot congress for the purpose of investigating and informing ourselves on the rules of national intercourse, domestic policy and political economy. Joseph advised us not to do it, lest we might excite the jealousy of our enemies. (2)

At a dinner party at John Taylor's house Joseph Smith "prophesied at the table that 5 years would not roll round before the company would all be able to live without cooking." The official HISTORY OF THE CHURCH deletes this entry from Joseph Smith's manuscript diary. Patriarch John Smith gives a blessing to Mehitabel Duty that "the Priesthood in its fullness shall be conferred upon thee in due time thou shalt have power over they relatives & friends & thy husband & children to lead them wethersoever thou wilt in as much as you seek faithfully & truly to preserve them in the bonds of the new & everlasting covenant." (3)

[Joseph Smith Diary] Tuesday, February 6th [several lines left blank] Evening with Hyrum and Sidney and the 12 [Apostles] and the wives at John Taylor's at 5 P.M. at supper. Very pleasant time. I prophesied at the table that 5 years would not roll round before the company would all be able to live without cooking. (4)

-- Feb 6, 1844 (Tuesday)
The ship Isaac Allerton sailed from Liverpool with 60 Saints, bound for Nauvoo. (5)

-- Feb 07, 1844
Having been aided by W. W. Phelps, Joseph Smith finishes a manuscript outlining his political ideas. It was later published under the title "Views of the Powers and Policy of the Government of the United States." (6)

-- Feb 7, 1844
[Apostle Wilford Woodruff Journal] 7th It was an exeeding cold day. I spent my time trying to regulate my affairs. I met in the evening with the Twelve at the Store to make some arangments about political affairs but nothing was done. (1)

Presidential candidate Lieutenant-General Joseph Smith's "Views on the Powers and Policy of the Government of the United States" is given its first public reading. He peppers his presentation with phrases from Latin, French, Italian, Hebrew, "Chaldean", and German. The NAUVOO NEIGHBOR asks "Who shall be our next President?" and answers: "General Joseph Smith. A man of sterling worth and integrity, and of enlarged views; a man who has raised himself from the humblest walks of life-" Joseph Smith writes in his diary: "A piece of doggerel appears in the Warsaw Message of this date, entitled 'Buckeye's Lamentations for the Want of More Wives,' evidently the production of Wilson Law, and breathing a very foul and malicious spirit." (3)

Nauvoo, Illinois. Joseph Smith met with his brother Hyrum Smith and the Twelve Apostles to devise means to promote the interests of the General Government. (7)

Joseph meets with the Twelve and completes and signs his "views of the powers and policy of the government of the United States." In this platform policy he reviews American leaders from Benjamin Franklin to John Tyler. He then makes eight propositions:1. Reduce Congress by two-thirds. Pay them $2 a day: "That is more than the farmer gets, and he lives honestly. "2. Turn penitentiaries into "seminaries of learning" and pardon all convicts except murderers.3. Abolish slavery by 1850 by paying slave holders a fair price with money from the sale of public lands.4. Abolish court-martials for desertion from the armed forces.5. Work for more government economy and fewer taxes.6. Establish a national bank.7. Give the president power to suppress mobs.8. "When we have the Red Man's consent," let the Union spread from coast to coast, inviting Oregon, Texas, Mexico, and Canada to join the Union if they so desire. (History of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (7 volumes) 6:
197-209.)(Dialogue: A Journal of Mormon Thought (various issues), Au '68, 17-27 compares Joseph's platform with other platforms of the day, calling it "an intriguing blend of ante bellum political rhetoric, Whig economic doctrines, Democratic expansionism, abolitionism, and the original and wide-range constitutional and political ideas of Joseph Smith himself." Nauvoo, Illinois. At the Nauvoo Municipal Court, where Joseph Smith presided as chief justice, he spent the whole morning and day listening to different city wards present their tax lists; then he remitted the taxes of the widows and poor who were unable, (1)

[Joseph Smith] William Weeks, the architect of the temple, argues with Joseph about the possibility of putting round windows in the temple. "I told him I would have the circles, if he had to make the temple ten feet higher than it was originally calculated; that one light at the centre of each circular window would be sufficient to light the whole room; that when the whole building was thus illuminated, the effect would be remarkably grand. 'I wish you could carry out my designs. I have seen in vision the splendid appearance of that building illuminated.' " (History of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (7 volumes) 6:196-97.) Joseph works on his political platform with W. W. Phelps and John M. Bernhisel. (3)

Nauvoo, Illinois. Joseph Smith instructed Elder William Weeks, the architect of the Nauvoo Temple, according to a vision Joseph had seen. (4)

[Joseph Smith Diary] Monday, February 5th 1844 Called at my office in the evening and heard read my views of the Gen[eral] Government. I was the first one who publicly proposed a National Bank on the principles I had advanced. (5)

[Nauvoo Temple] oseph Smith and William Weeks met to discuss the Temple's construction during the coming summer. The Prophet desired "round windows in the broad side of the building." Weeks said that such circular windows "were a violation of all known rules of architecture." The Prophet responded, that he would have circular windows even if the building had to be ten feet higher, and then he said, "I wish you to carry out my designs. I have seen in vision the splendid appearance of that building illuminated, and will have it built according to the pattern shown me." (6)

[Patriarchal Blessings] William Jackson. (Given by John Smith.)

"Dear Brother, I lay my hands upon thy head and confer a Father's blessing upon thy head because thou art an orphan. Thou art of the lineage of Benjamin and if faithful thou shalt possess Benjamin's portion and have an inheritance with him in Zion. Thou hast had many trials--the enemy strives to destroy thee. Inasmuch as thou wilt give heed unto the counsels and commandments of God thou shalt overcome and be a mighty man on the earth. Thou shalt inherit the blessings of the Melchesidic Priesthood and work all manner of miracles which were done anciently. Thou hast a mission to perform and it is left to thy choice in what part of the earth to perform it. Thou shalt have power to escape thine enemies at all times. The destroyer shall march through the earth in thy day and cut down thousands on thy right hand and on thy left and thy heart shall be pained because of it and thou shalt be able to save many of their children and bring them to Zion but the destroyer shall not come n
igh thee. The angel of the Lord shall defend thee. Thou shalt have the ministering of angels and converse with them face to face as a man converseth with a friend. Thou shall assist them in gathering and bringing those children to Zion. Thou shalt have power to rebuke the waves of the sea and all the devouring elements. Thou shalt waft thyself from place to place on the wings of the wind to accomplish thy mission speedily. Thou shalt not be confined in prison for a long time for the angel of the Lord shall deliver thee. Thou shalt have power to redeem thy dead friends and bring them up in the Resurrection of the just. Thou shalt have an inheritance in Zion with thy brethren and companion with a numerous offspring and when thou hast finished thy mission thou shalt return to Zion with joy and gladness and meet thy friends and thy head shall be exceeding gray. Thou shalt be abundantly satisfied with thy labours and shall have all thy desires inasmuch as thou observest the words
of wisdom and eternal life. I seal all these blessings upon thy head and I seal thee up unto Eternal Life in the name of thy Redeemer. Amen." (From typescript; P8, f17, RLDS Archives.) [Age, 33; Scribe, S. F. Johnson.] (7)

[Apostle Wilford Woodruff Journal] Feb 3d 1844 I walked into President Joseph Smith Store or office over the store & spent a few moments in conversing with Elders W Richards And Wm. W. Phelps & President Joseph Smith Came into the room & Said he had a dream & related it to us which was as follows:

+ I was standing on a peninsula in the midst of a vast body of water whare their appears to be a large harbor or a peer built out for boats to Come into. I was surrounded by my friends & while looking at this harbor I saw a Steem boat approaching the harbour. Their was bridges on the peer for persons to cross & there came up a wind & drove the steem boat under one of the bridges & upset it. I run up to the boat expecting the persons would all drowne. And wishing to do sumthing to assist them I put my hand against the side of the boat & with one surge I shoved it under the bridge & righted it up & then [I] told them to take care of themselves. But it was not long before I saw them starting out into the channel or main body of the water again. The storms were raging & the waters rough. I said to my friends that if they did not understand the signs of the times & the spirit of Prophecy they would be apted to be lost. It was but a few moments after when we saw the waves break ov
er the boat & she soon founderd & went down with all on board & perished.

The storm & waters were still vary rough. Yet I told my friends around me that I believed I could stem those waves & storm & swim in the waters better than the steem boat did & at any rate I was determined to try it. But my friends laughed at me & told me I Could not stand the storm at all but should be drouned. The waters looked Clear & beautiful though exeeding rough, & I said I believed I could swim & I would try it anyhow. They said I would drown. I said I would have a frolic in the water first if I did & I dove of into the raging waves.

I had swum but a short distance when a towering wave overwhelmed me for a time but I soon found myself on the top of it & soon I met the second wave in the same way & for awhile I struggled hard to live in the midst of the storm & waves. But I soon found I gained upon evry wave & stemmed the torrent better & better & I soon had power to swim with my head out of water so the waves did not break over me at all & I found I had swam a great distance & in looking about me I saw Br Samuel by my side. I asked him how he liked it. He said first rate & I thought so to. I was soon enabled to swim with my head & Sholdiers out of water & I Could swim as fast as any steem Boat, & in a little time it becaim calm & I Could rush through the water & ownly go in to my loins & so[n?] I ownly went in to my knees & finally could tread on the top of the water & went almost with the speed of an arrow & I said to Samuel see how swift I can go & I thought it was great sport & pleasure to travel with
such speed & I awoke.

What the interpetation of the foregoing dream was the spirit of God or time must determin.

In the evening of this day the quorum met at Joseph store. Brothers Wm. W Clayton & Joseph Young met with them But I was not present. William Clayton, Joseph Smith's personal secretary, and Joseph Young, brother of Brigham, together with their wives receive their second anointings in the room over Joseph Smith's Store in Nauvoo. Clayton writes, "was permitted to the ordinance of washing and anointing, and was received into the Quorum of Priesthood. This is one of the greatest favors ever conferred on me and for which I feel grateful." Two and a half months previously Clayton had written that he thought Emma Smith "had power to prevent my being admitted to Joseph's Lodge" in the mean time had asked Joseph, in writing, for admittance. Upon waking to a temperature of "15 degrees below Zero" Wilford Woodruff "set a pot of chaircoal in the bedroom to warm it." After shaving and washing and changing his clothes he and wife Phebe are "overpowered" by carbon monoxide from the charcoal: "It made us most sick. We took the coal out. Aired the room. But it made us most sick we had to go to bed upon it. Later that evening Wilford Woodruff and wife Phebe "met with the quorum of the Twelve and others for instruction." They "were both some unwell from the effects of the coal during the day. Yet we had an interesting time." Wilford Woodruff and wife Phebe receive their second anointing in the room over Joseph Smith's store. Joseph Smith "had some company in the eve from Warsaw &c. Lectured to them on politics, religion, &c." (1)

Joseph meets with the Twelve and others to consider whom to support for the presidency of the United States. Henry Clay (who had told the Saints, "You had better go to Oregon for redress") and Martin Van Buren are the only candidates. It is decided that "it is morally impossible for this people . . . to vote for either candidate." Willard Richards moves that Joseph Smith be a candidate for president on an independent ticket. The motion is carried unanimously. Joseph suggests that missionaries be sent throughout the country to advocate his candidacy. He says, "Tell the people we have had Whig and Democratic Presidents long enough; we want a President of the United States. If I ever get into the presidential chair, I will protect the people in their rights and liberties. . . . The Whigs are striving for a king under the garb of democracy. There is oratory enough in the Church to carry me into the presidential chair the first slide." He works on his political platform with W. W.
Phelps. (History of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (7 volumes) 6:187-89).Gov. Ford sends a letter to the people of Hancock County, stating that he has been called upon to intervene in the increasing problems in the county, but refusing to either aid the Mormons or take away the arms from the Nauvoo Legion. "I believe that there has been nothing like war among you . . . let a state of war ensue, and I will be compelled to interfere with executive power . . . against those who shall be the first transgressors." (History of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (7 volumes) 6:189-90.) (3)

[Joseph Smith Diary] Monday, January 29th 1844 At 10 A.M. The Twelve [Apostles] met at the Mayor's office [with] Joseph and Hyrum [and] J[ohn] P. Green. Moved by Willard Richards and voted unanimously that we have independent electors and that Joseph Smith be a candidate for the next presidency [of the United States] and that we use all honorable means to secure his election.

Joseph said to accomplish this you must send every man in the city who could speak throughout the land to electioneer, [to give] stump speech[es]—[about the] Mormon religion-election Laws &c. &c. Yearsly must go. Parley to N[ew] York. Snow to V[ermon]t. Rigdon to Pa.

"After the April conference we will have gen[eral] conferences all over the nation and I will attend them. Tell the people we have had Whig and Democrats [as] Presidents long enough. We want a President of the United States. If I ever get in the Presidential chair I will protect the people in their rights and liberties. I will not electione[e]r for myself, Hyrum, Brigham, Parley, and Taylor must go. The Whigs are striving for a king under the garb of Democracy. There is oretory enough in the Church to carry me into the Presidential chair the first slide." Cold, very.

Mr. Bedell wanting an election at Warsaw, Benjamin Winchester was appointed to go. Capt[ain] White of Quincy was at the Mansion last night and this morning drank a toast: "May all your enemies be skined, their skins made into drum heads for your friends to beat upon. Also may Nauvoo become the empire seat of government." Capt[ain] White.

Clayton must go out or he will apostatize. Must. Also gave some instructions concerning an address to the paper for Bro[ther] Phelps to write—views on the powers and policy of the Government of United States &c.

A Millerite Lecturer come in to the office with Joseph and Clayton about 5 P.M. [and] had some conversation about Hades and Shaol &c. and Lectured in the evening in the Hall. (4)

[Anointed Quorum] Sunday evening prayer circle meeting in upper room of Smith's store; anointing and endowment for Parley P. Pratt's deceased wife Thankful Halsey (Hand Pratt), by proxy, second anointings for Parley and Thankful Pratt. Joseph Smith "not there." . (8)

[Apostle Wilford Woodruff Journal] Jan 21st 1844 Sunday I met with the congregation of the Saints at the Temple & herd an inter-estin discourse deliverd by President Joseph Smith. In the afternoon I preached to a company of Saints at the house of Br Coolage & had a good time.

I met with the quorum in the evening. Had an interestin time. Many good exhortation were given by the brethren concerning the things of God. (P.P.P.) Received his 2d Anointing. Joseph said Concerning Parley P Pratt that He had no wife sealed to him for Eternity and asked if their was any harm for him to have another wife for time & Eternity as He would want a wife in the Resurrection or els his glory would be Cliped. Many arguments He used upon this subject which were rational & consistant. Br Joseph said now what will we do with Elder P P Pratt? He has no wife sealed to him for Eternity. He has one living wife but she had a former Husband and did not wish to be sealed to Parly for Eternity. Now is it not right for Parley to have another wife that can [ ]? (1)

[Apostle Wilford Woodruff Journal] Jan 21st Sunday + A large assembly of Saints met at the Temple And herd an interesting discours deliverd By President Joseph Smith. The following is a synopsis of his discourse upon the occasion:

When I consider the surrounding circumstances in which I am placed in this day, standing in the open air with week lungs & sumwhat out of health, I feel that I must have prayers & faith of my brethren that God may strengthen me & pour out his special blessings upon me if you get much from me this day.

Their are many people assembled here. to day & throughout this city, & from various parts of the world who say that they have recieved to a certainty a portion of knowledge from God by revelation in the way that he has ordained & pointed out. I shall take the broad ground then that if we have or can receive a portion of knowledge from God by immediate revelation by the same source we can receive all knowledge.

What shall I talk about today? I know what Br Cahoon wants me to speak about, he wants me to speak about the comeing of Elijah in the last days. I can see it in his eye. I will speak upon that Subject then. The Bible says "I will send you Elijah before the great & dredful day of the Lord Come that he shall turn the hearts of the fathers to the Children & the hearts of the children to their fathers lest I come & smite the whole earth with a Curse." Now the word turn here should be translated (bind or seal).

But what is the object of this important mission or how is it to be fulfilled? The keys are to be deliverd the spirit of Elijah is to come, The gospel to be esstablished the Saints of God gatherd, Zion built up, & the Saints to come up as Saviors on mount Zion. But how are they to become Saviors on Mount Zion? By building their temples erecting their Baptismal fonts & going forth & receiving all the ordinances, Baptisms, confirmations, washings anointings ordinations, & sealing powers upon our heads in behalf of all our Progenitors who are dead & redeem them that they may come forth in the first resurrection & be exhalted to thrones of glory with us, & herein is the Chain that binds the hearts of the fathers to the Children & the Children to the Fathers which fulfills the mission of Elijah & I would to God that this temple was now done that we might go into it & go to work & improve our time & make use of the seals while they are on earth.

And the Saints have none to much time to save & redeem their dead, & gather together their living relatives that they may be saved also, before the earth will be smitten & the consumption decreed falls upon the world & I would advise all the Saints to go to with their might & gather together all their living relatives to this place that they may be sealed & saved that they may be prepared against the day that the destroying angel goes forth & if the whole Church should go to with all their might to save their dead seal their posterity & gather their living friends & spend none of their time in behalf of the world they would hardly get through before night would come when no man Could work.

And my ownly trouble at the present time is concerning ourselves that the Saints will be divided & broken up & scattered before we get our salvation secure. For their is so many fools in the world for the devil to operate upon it gives him the advantage often times.

The question is freequently asked can we not be saved without going through with all thes ordinances &c. I would answer No not the fulness of Salvation. Jesus Said their was many mansions in his fathers house & he would go & prepare a place for them. House here named should have been translated (Kingdom) & any person who is exhalted to the highest mansion has to abide a celestial law & the whole law to.

But their has been a great difficulty in getting anything into the heads of this generation. It has been like splitting hemlock knots with a corn doger for a wedge & a pumpkin for a beetle; even the Saints are slow to understand. I have tried for a number of years to get the minds of the saints prepared to recieve the things of God, but we free-quently see some of them after suffering all they have for the work of God will fly to peaces like glass as soon as any thing Comes that is Contrary to their traditions. They cannot stand the fire at all. How many will be able to abide a Celestial law & go through & recieve their exhaltation I am unable to say but many are called & few are Chosen.
