[Brigham Young Sermon] I should be glad if the captains were here. I have informed the brethren that I wanted no man in my company that [-] did not feel it a pleasure to go to [-] business might to accomplish in [-] '- if the word and will of the Lord is not organized to their minds, [-], for I want a people whose heart is in the work. I want the captains to instruct the companies to withdraw if this in not their feelings. [-] benefit in it? The people [-] who are the people '- earn a few on [-] which belongs to many 'they cannot '- if you suffer one man to do all this work and [-] the men idle. Where is the equality '- we wanted the captain to say we have fitted out 20 men each '- is there any companies that cannot fit out 7 women with 21 men? If they have not horses cannot they change oxen for the. I have 12 men fitted out myself '- fitted out with seed, grain and provisions '- if I do this for the 100, what would be the righteousness of it '- would any man in the world say it is right '- are there or not man enough in the first 100 that the captains could report fitted out '- I fit out 5 wagons and 12 men '- and the rest of the 100 have not faith to say there fitted out '- whether they are Carr? In a bread box '- I have faith to bring it and my works will prove it '- some say sacrifice all, if they only knew it was right '- it is right for some to go and I leave my family without bread and go if I never see them again '- I do not want the society of men who will not [-] '- they have prayed for this very time, to go amongst the Lamanites '- if the Devil would just as soon you turn on that '"if its only right'" and see man go to hell, as on any other principles. I love [-] in order that the Lord may try his people and the righteous sifted out '- if I had money enough to do everything myself, the brethren who now called [-] wheat would become as [-]. I hope soon to see the day when the desires of a people will be humble, righteous, and I can see honest men that I can deal with them in the [-], and tell them to pray themselves without my seeing it done. I propose a plan it man will not. Let every captain take a perfect record of everything put into the pioneer company and see who assists '- and the other lads who came on we will not sell to, and let them die. In 4 weeks Hathaway [-] in less than 3 weeks 438. if Rockwood had spent 1000 to buy melons, sugar, etc, he must stay 6 weeks and could not tell it '- men will roll out 1000's of dollars in clothing and going to the Bishop and begging and if their children die, go to the Bishop and say they cannot pay for their burial of their dead. I know men have lied to me like the devil, and came to beg a little molasses etc. If you know any they? Words, whereby you can get the will of the Lord, get it. If you don't do it you may just go without it. If any man is determined to hold me to his property '- I am one he will scratch a poor mans head '- no man walks in the celestial gate without he goes through certain [-]. It is not every person that does all he can to build up the Kingdom '- it would have been the will of the Lord for the 12 to have gone over the mountains '- I could a deal easier saw up this house and eat it for Indian meal and give satisfaction than go over the mountains. Brother Joseph said there is nothing but what I have shower and told you and enabled you to go through into the celestial kingdom and they might as well have got all in the Kirtland Temple 'as now. I am not going to try to keep my family here 'some calculate to reap but not to sow '- some to eat but not to plant '- I can go and look out [-] enough in this camp to fit out the pioneers with 12 months provisions '- and the captains of 100's will report all the pioneers fitted out '- shall we come here '- I swear to you if you come here again and don't report them fitted out I'll rub your ears for you '- worse than I have doe tonight '- and I shall do as I have told the Bishops, take the clothes out of the [-] and see what they have got '- the people are able and they have so much property that it is a perfect curse to them. I shall have enough to take some of my goods '- men cannot carry provisions on [-] of having so much goods '- before the 12 leave this place we shall leave written instructions '- what they are to do '- I want them to raise grain here before they starve '- I want to organize them in a military capacity and fence up about 600 acres of land '- I will train them up there about a week '- if they cannot make a field here I am sure they cannot make one there '- let the captains make a list of those who send a bushel of seed '- a wagon or a mule 'and I want the small houses jerked up and blocked up 'so that the women may not be run over by the Indians and have the things stolen by them '- I want them left so that they may not be run out and over '- I want them left so that the Indians may not [-] them '- if we have anything to spare give it them, for I feel to pity them. I don't expect any will want to leave my company '- want the captains of 10's to make a true report of who sends pioneers, seeds etc. '- and by the same rule we have a right to be covetous as well as you have now. I want that mill, before we can go. There was water to give us three feet head '- the water in the dam was 3.11 inches higher than the wheel '- if this is not done before we go, where is the flour to come from [-] I have 400 bushels of corn and 100 bushels of seed corn to sell, and pay the debt '- when it comes pleasant weather I want this entire camp to work at it '- and do up the work '- I am going to sell the mill and pay the debts '- I don't want any man to say he helps to support me if the Bishops will take the work off my shoulders '- I had about 5,000 dollars in Nauvoo when Brother Joseph died. I had 8 or 10 [-] Who never paid me any thing. If you tell me I cant support myself, its an insult. I just do the thing that I know to be right and the Lord blesses me'- I am disposed to have the tents gathered up, that was made out of the Tabernacle, and the pioneers have some good clothing to wear through the brush. There is one item I am gong to say before my company, here's brother Bullock, who is writing all the time. Can any one tell where he gets his living '- he must eat '- are you willing to help brother Bullock? I want the Elders teach when I do tonight '- if any man come to you, sent of the Lord '- will always come with our errand '- each your principles where you may be saved '- they never swear or [-] you '- there never has [-] or [-] or [-] of the Lord but what came with our open, frank, spirit '- if [-] find a mans wants to make covenants that man will be deceived and is of the devil '- I will support you any how '- just say he is of the devil '- [-] is some to be left of the Lord as he is a living man 'did Joseph ever ask you to make a covenant with him 'and swear '- or any man who was a great one '- no man who comes into the presence of the Lord but what looks upon himself like a poor meager [-] '- feels his weakness and nothingness '- I never saw Joseph but was always so before the Lord '- but if any man wanted to teach him, he felt the might of his words '- why I tell you this is a man by the name of McCoury '- but as for his being Adam '- the Ancient of Days '- or a Prophet of the Lord, I do not know any name unified enough '- let the man alone '- he wont do nay hurt '- you may always know that the Spirit is of the Devil '- there's men in this camp who swear to be true to each other '- I never betray any brethren, but do good al the days of my life 'and I make no other covenants '- I know that the glory of God is pure and holy and no man can enter into celestial glory, but what is holy '- and prepared to dwell in eternal burnings '- I want to see the people who will live pure, gathered out '- if you can only make out 10 men for pioneers '- report them ready '- and who finds seed grain '- when I am ready to start '- I want my brethren to be ready to go. I want the Lord to dictate '- now get ready your wagons, I want to take some things with me, that I don't want to leave behind. -- Winter Quarters, Nebraska [
