Mormon History, Mar 5, 1847

[Hosea Stout Diary] Friday March 5th 1847. The day was cold & dark & ground hard froze[.] I was around as usual and also wrote some in my Biographical history. I in the evening I went on guard and found one of the guard absent and in fact he had been reported absent more or less all winter[.] I could never find him at his post, but he was sure to be at a party or a dancing school every time. Now I thought it time to report him so I went to Richards office and finding the President there, waited till he went away and told him how it had been[.] He was aware that all was not right so he went with me to the mans house and we there learned that he was at Br P. H. Youngs to a party so we went and found him.
The day had turned warm in the after noon and the streets as a flood of mud and water and very disagreeable traveling
When we came in we were invited to join in the dance out Brigham said we had not time that he was returning for home from a council and found me, hunting some police which I could not find & he thought we would come up there and see if we could not find some here on duty & then give some more sarcastic slants at the delinquent policeman but all in a good humor.
We stoped a short time till they danced one reel and then we took a French Four and came away. He saw how matters were & gave me advice how to proceed in the case and then went home at 11 oclock and I watched the policeman untill his tour of duty was out
He staid at the party untill it broke up & came home and staid in his house a while and came out a few minutes and went back and never appeared till one and then only to go and call up his relief and then I came home
I had now proof positive in his case and intended to deal with him. No more tonight.
