[Hosea Stout Diary] Tuesday January 12th 1847. This fore noon Br Carns & myself went over the river to look at the situation of the country as to the places for our enemies to lurk & hide up or prepare to carry out any evil purposes against us. We went some three miles below. I do not think it very convenient for their purposes
We came back in the afternoon and stoped at Br Pratts and found that the police orders were about filled up so I came home & issued orders again amounting to 80 dollars & filed them in after regulating the guard & then (came home went on patrol guard and wrote untill late. [crossed out])
