[Apostle Willard Richards Journal] Strong south wind. About 11 a.m., Elder Woodruff called at the Octagon when the top window blew in and fell against the stove, grazing Elder Woodruff's hand. Presidents Young and Kimball called at the Octagon at half past 2 p.m. and informed the Dr. [Richards], who was still in bed, that there was a council at Elder BensonÂ's at 2 o'clock. Dr. immediately arose and repaired to Elder BensonÂ's where he found Presidents B. Young, H. C. Kimball, O. Pratt, Joseph Young, and E. T. Benson, who soon invited them to his table well furnished with nice pork, fat beef, roast turkey, and apple pie. Dr. Richards carved the turkey and Mrs. Benson poured the tea and coffee. After supper, the brethren retired and had conversation concerning the accounts of the Battalion. The brethren retired soon after sunset.
About 8 the Dr. [Richards] called at Colonel RockwoodÂ's and found President Young transacting business. Repaired to the post office, took the letters for the U. S. mail, dictated a letter to Joseph A. Stratton at St. Louis for Thomas to write; also, postscript to letter for the brethren at Liverpool, several pages in camp journal, wrote a letter to Jacob Peart and wife, closed up about 2 oÂ'clock the next morning. Elders A. Lyman and G. A. Smith left Winter Quarters to visit the brethren on the Pottowatomie [Pottawatamie] lands. Read to them "The Word and Will of the Lord." Instructed them in the principles of emigration and organized a company.
