[Hosea Stout Diary] Thursday Sepbr 18. 1845. met with the Legion this morning at 9 A. M. as on yesterday the 4 Regts were present as aforesaid â" report from the 2 Reg. was made that they had met & organized ready for service & had elected Capt Henry Herriman Leiu Col.Of the same in place of Philamer [Philander?] Colton who showed a negligence in the service of his regiments â" reports from the different guards â" were all well â" several prisoners were sent in â" having failed to satisfy the guard but were
dismissed.at 12 oclock Gen Rich dismissed the Legion with orders for all companies except those occupying the several posts aforesaid, to be in readiness for actual service at a moments warning & that they immediately repair to the ground they now occupied At firing of the artillery it shall be the signal of alarm after which I went home â" took dinner at past 1 o clock David Candland my clerk came & wrote the address of Leui Gen Brigham Young at past three Gen Ric

to see Charles Shumway who is still very sick from there we went down to the Temple to meet with the police at 5 o clock â" Capt Hunter & McRae of the Fur Compy were dispatched on an expedition to reconnoiter the enemy lines near Carthage â" After detailing the police guards I received orders from Gen Rich to raise 20 men well armed & equipped to be sent in 3 wagons to assist the Brethren on Camp creek which I did from the 1st & 4 regts under the command of Howard Egan of the old Police this was done from reports brought in that the mob were about to commit their depredation on that settlement I then went home about dark being unwell about dark
