A mob in Hancock County, Illinois, attempts to kill Sheriff Jacob Backenstos (a nonmember) for his efforts to bring mob members to justice. While defending Backenstos, Orrin Porter Rockwell shoots and kills Frank A. Worrell, one of the leaders of the mob.
