The "Book of Mormon" has been placed in our hands. A viler imposition was never practised. It is an evidence of fraud, blasphemy and credulity, shocking to the Christian and moralist. The "author and proprietor" is one "Joseph Smith, jr."-a fellow who, by some hocus pocus, acquired such an influence over a farmer of Wayne county, that the latter mortgaged his farm for $3,000, which he paid for printing and binding 5000 copies of this blasphemous work. "Blasphemy-"Book of Mormon," alias the Golden Bible," Rochester Daily Advertiser and Telegraph. (4)

D&C 23 (Manchester): Oliver Cowdery should beware of pride; Hyrum to preach and strengthen the church forever because of his family; Samuel H. Smith to exhort and strengthen the church but not yet to go on a mission; Joseph Sr. to exhort and strengthen the church forever; Joseph Knight to take up his cross and pray publicly, unite with the church, and exhort continually. (4)

Joseph Knight was still reading the Book of Mormon and wanted more time before being baptized. (4)

Joseph an apostle and an elder, Oliver an apostle and an elder. Articles and Covenants (4)

Oliver baptizes, by all accounts, Joseph Sr. and Martin Harris in Crooked Brook; also by most accounts, Sarah W. Rockwell; and by some accounts, also Lucy Smith. Joseph Sr. and Martin (and others?) are baptized at night "Because of persecution." Inventing, 157-159. (4)
