[Hosea Stout Diary] Sunday April the 5th 1846. This was a fine clear morning and the ground froze a little[.] It was clear & warm all day. and very pleasant.
Today Allen Stouts wife came to my tent they had been in the prairie during the storm in their waggon[.] We all sent off our cattle to brouse not having any thing to feed them with.
I took a long walk today with Hunter to the North of camp. We went over rolling prairie of very rich soil & came to a beautiful grove of [trees] which had all been killed by the fire & presented a striking sensation of destroyed lovliness & made us think on the destruction of our enemies. We then passed through some timber and took a circuitous rout to the road in advance of the camp & found Elder John Taylor moving to our astonishment for we did not think that any one would again presume to go in advance of our President & Leader after what had been said about Bishop Miller & others
The roads had just began to settle & his waggons cut in to the hubs in some places rendering the road almost impassable for any one else to pass[.] He had been on the prairie during the storm. We then came into camp & there remained till evening[.] I then regulated the guard at dark after which I called out my company of teamsters & gave them instructions on their duty.My wife was better this evening.no more to night.
