Mormon History, Apr 6, 1847 (Conference)

[Brigham Young Sermon] I have but a few words to make. I trust we shall meet thousands of faces that we have never yet seen. Mormonism is in the world, its in the hearts of the honest, its inherit in them. It is congenial with their feelings and Spirit all their days. It is their prerogative or right to Jesus to reign as King of Nations as well as King of Saints. There principles always were in the world and always will be. Although the priesthood was not among them, and the priesthood went with those who were slain. I believe this kingdom will increase until Jesus takes the kingdom. We rejoice that we can go to the nations of the earth and gather into it. I am anxious to leave this place and be about my errand. I feel my garments are clean from the blood of this people. I don't know my acts would be another whiter [-] than what it has been this. I don't believe I could better my last words? Services? The principle of eternally preaching and never practicing is folly. It is once telling to me its enough. If I have taught you good and righteous principles follow them out and all will be well with us. If I have said don't or taught anything that people things is wrong, let the people pardon the wrong. It is for God and myself to settle any wrong. I love every body in the truth, but to say that I love the people who do wickedly I do not. As to charity I'll apply it to those who need charity. It is written charity covers a multitude of sins. I do not wish to expose iniquity if there is any chance of them quitting their iniquity. It is such [-] days and times as this, that hurts me, I am sick. I want the brethren and sisters to observe and keep the laws and ordinances of the house of the Lord, pray for yourselves, and your enemies. Pray that God may softer their hearts until we are out of their grasp. They are hunting us and want to destroy us. They want us to go away, get away from here Mormons, go to Missouri or Illinois or any other state. They may come, until you build good fences? And then get away Mormons. I say to our enemies if the state of Missouri would have over the hundredth part of what they owe us, it would carry us all over the mountains. Pray that we may have influence over the red man of the forest?, that God will sustain us until all Israel is gathered. That the Lord will sustain you in righteous. Have power over disease and temptation. Hold your own salvation, hang on to the promises of the Almighty and men [-] will increase until the say of perfection. I expect a many times to see you again do as you have been told. In regard to dancing, it is a snare that will entangle the feelings of the young and the enemy has power to entice them. It is delightsome of itself. When the mans passions are incited. The people would rather be at a ball than praying. I now say let it alone here and in other places. If righteousness men govern, it is proper. I had rather there is [isolation] When we feel and are [-] to feel the morality of man and see our dependence on the Almighty. Understand the principle of eternal lives, and that we are connected with those principles we go away rejoicing. What do you get [-] giving to or place of [-] What do you [-], its nothing but a [-], or drop, a man that contemplates world [-] into existence, glorified and brought into glory. I say the dance is a [-], if you are merry, sing psalms, but if you want to trick up your heels do it, and then stop. It does me good. For its good for nothing but exercise the body and let the mind rest or [-]. It is necessary to have chaff in order to save the wheat. Its an almighty principle, and eternal principle. Let the [-] upon and the chaff be blown over by the wind. George Laub Journal. Brigham Young was teaching the people to get the Spirit of the Lord and to keep the Spirit of the Lord. For he had seen Joseph in a dream and he told him to tell this people to get the spirit and to keep it and that he told him again and again to try all spirits that they may know good spirit from evil ones and not to bar their hearts against any but cleave to the good, for this is the way to try the different spirits. -- Winter Quarters, Nebraska [Thomas Bullock Minutes, LJA; Thomas Bullock—LDS Church Reporter, 1844-56.C, Archives, Church History Library, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Salt Lake City, Utah.; GCM, Archives, Church History Library, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Salt Lake City, Utah..; General Church Minutes.
