[Hosea Stout Diary] Friday March 6th 1846. The weather was clear pleasant & warm to day. Sent some teams for corm & some men went out to work for some meat and corn.I staid all day in camp.My wife was very sick to day with a pain in her right side.To day some of Gullys men overtook us and reported that he had got his waggon up to the camp below Bonaparte and had there fell in company with his wife and left his company and declared that he would have nothing more to do with it and advised his men also to attach themselves to other companies or take any course which they thought proper[.] He now complained that he was not used well.He never even sent word to me by his men who he knew were coming to me to let me know what he had done but took the things out of the waggon and left it by the road side without any arraingements to either let me know it or to bring it himself[.] In fine he most disgracefully deserted his post and proved himself unworthy to be trusted.
After I had learned the situation of affairs from his men we had come in camp I sent Rowland Shannon & Joseph Taylor with three yoke of oxen to bring up the waggon. They started about four oclock P. M. with orders never to return untill they brought it up[.] They proceeded forthwith and returned before day the next morning traveling all night. The found the waggon by the road side and Gully in the camp[.] He kept his yoke of oxen thus entirely abandoning the guard. All day to day teams were coming into camp which had not been able to come last night[.] Capt B. Jones & C Allen also came up today
They did not wait for the companies which whey were to accompany because they did not organize as they were directed and so the guard did not want to have any thing to do with them. To night Capt C. Allen gave us another specimen of his Stubborn and insoubordinate Spirit for when his men were called on to stand their regular turn on guard he preemptorially refused to let one go saying that they was too tired.which if it was true it was equally true with the rest[.] Nothing more took place tonight.
