Mormon History, Jul 8, 1845

William Clayton writes in his diary: "President Young and Elder Richards came to the office and brought a bag containing $2599.75 in Gold. Joseph Toronto, an Italian, came to President Young and said he wanted to give himself and all he had to President Young. He had this gold which was carefully wrapped up in old rags, tin Books &c which he freely and voluntarily gave up saying he should henceforth look to President Young for protection and council."
