[Patriarchal Blessings] Patriarchal Blessing of Mathias Cowley given by William Smith on June 20, 1845

The Patriarchal blessing of Mathias Cowley son of James and Isabella born Kirkbradden Isle of Man December 2nd 1829

My Brother I bless thee in the name of Jesus Christ with a Patriarchal blessing, this blessing shall afford thee comfort while thou art growing up in years for because of that natural disposition inherited from thy fathers to seek after knowledge and to be numbered with the Israel of God thou shalt become great in thy day and generation and when more mature years have rolled upon thee thou shalt understand greater mysteries of the kingdom for there are many things that are laid up for thee that shall be revealed in the own due time of the Lord and in a manner that shall make thee great in thy generation thou art now in the days of thy youth and because of thy lineage thou art numbered with thee [the] seed of Abraham and a Priesthood is prepared for thee that shall endue [endow] thee with great qualifications for thou art of the seed of Joseph through and by the tribe of Judah thy blood having intermingled with the tribe of Judah because of the Apostacy of the Josephites fro
m the true faith and mingling among the nations of the earth

thou art a singular child and of a strange and peculiar disposition this has already been seen and must and will be seen in many hereafter thy name shall be had in remembrance and thou shalt be prospered as one that searcheth after the treasures of heaven thou shalt be great in thy day in taking observations and criticising upon the acts of the people for thou wilt journey to distant lands and visit many kingdoms thy voice shall be heard upon Vessels on the sea and also on the land and a great nation shall come of thy labors and although sickness trials and troubles disappointments and perplexities await thee and temptations arise to lead thee from the path of virtue for the Devil will seek to destroy thee all thy lifetime yet because of the elect and the purposes of God thou shalt be saved

and when thou art old thou shalt sit down in the temple of God in the city of the Saints and count up the history of thy life in joy and not with grief and when the Savior comes thou shalt be with him in the clouds of heaven and receive an everlasting inheritance and if thou art prayerful and faithful in all things in keeping the commandments of God and obeying the Council [Counsel] of those who are placed in authority over thee thou shalt be instructed in wisdom and be blessed with a Salvation that is immortal in the kingdom of God which blessing I seal upon thee dear Brother in the name of Jesus Christ. even so. Amen

[Patriarchal Blessings] Patriarchal Blessing of Samuel C. Brown given by William Smith on June 20, 1845

The Patriarchal blessing of Samuel C. Brown son of David and Mary born Frederick Co Virginia October 10th 1820.

Dear Brother Samuel I lay my hands upon your head to confer upon you a father[']s blessing for I look upon you as a lonely wanderer and as an orphan child travelling among Strangers and as a pilgrim on the earth and although thou hast been rejected by many yet many have received thee and have taken thee into their houses and bid thee God speed and none will dispute but what thou art honest and that thy intentions are good in preaching the Gospel and yet for the want of greater wisdom thy zeal is greater than thy knowledge yet thou Shalt be instructed and learn wisdom because thou art willing to be taught by the Bretheren [Brethren]

when thou art humble and led by the Spirit of God and if at anytime thou shouldst be lifted up and be exalted in thine own heart after many days humility cometh again thou hast been truly born into the kingdom of God and thy faith hath made thee an heir of Abraham and a joint heir with Jesus Christ for after all thy labors are done thou shalt be rewarded according to the ability and prudence thou hast possessed and in that faith which is of Abraham that maketh the[e] one of the chosen seed of Israel thou art saved by grace and not by works yet a proper increase of works will perfect thy Salvation for the elect hath obtained it and none shall wrest it from thy hands thou hast a work to perform and it shall be according to the appointments thou hast received and none shall despoil thee of thy glory when thou art made a partaker of the appointments that have been made by God when thou art fully called and chosen

thou shalt realize a restoration in time to all that thou hast lost because of thy determination to continue in the faith of the Gospel although at times thou hast been wearied and almost fainted by the way yet dear Brother thou shalt be respected and loved by many because of thine innocence and desire to do right and if thou wilt continue from this time forth to pray much and learn of thy Bretheren [Brethren] who are in authority over thee and will abide their Council thou shalt visit the temple when it is done and receive greater blessings in the same others shall hear thy voice besides those who are in the city of the Saints for thou wilt after a while travel and journey again and whither thou art sent out to preach as one of the appointed Elders in Israel yet thou wilt lift up thy voice and bear thy testimony and wisdom shall be increased upon thee for some have thought thee not very wise yet God is able to make thee an instrument in his hand to do good and get to thysel
f a name that shall never be forgotten and because of the willingness of thy heart to sacrifice thy life thy money and thy goods to build up Zion and preach the Gospel thy Sins are all forgiven thee thy days shall be lengthened out and thou shalt lay down thy life in peace and receive four fold for all the good thou hast down [done] in the morning of the first Resurrection the blessing with which the Prophets blessed their children is upon thine head even the blessing of eternal life which blessing I seal upon thee dear Brother in the name of Jesus Christ Amen

Given by William Smith Patriarch at the City of Joseph June 20th 1845 Recorded by Robert Campbell his Clerk (1)
