[Apostle Willard Richards Journal] Camp of Israel, Grove Garden. Morning cold, wind northwest, light clouds passing occasionally. About 10 a.m., 4 of the hunters of 50 arrived in camp, bringing in 1 turkey. Two of them, namely J. D. Lee [Young] and Levi S. Young, having been absent since Thursday morning, reported that they had eaten only a part of 2 meals in almost 3 days. 1 squirrel and 2 young owls about half grown which they found dead was their bread. They also reported they had been in pursuit of a number of persons driving loose horses, who they supposed to be horse thieves, but was unable to overhaul them, they having about 5 miles distance the advantage. The supposed thieves bent their route towards the garrison on the Racoon Fork of the Des Moines River, which they learned from some moving families was about 60 miles distance from this settlement. About 12 noon, the President instructed his clerk to draw an order on the pioneers who were at work in the neighborhood of MillerÂ's Mill, the distance of about 40 miles, for all the provisions that they have on hand for the camp by the 3 teams that started out for first company. Quarter before 3 p.m., H. G. Sherwood set his compass in presence of President Young, W. Richards, and others, at southwest corner of the north field. After taking 1 observation north, ran east 3/4 of a mile.
