[Apostle Willard Richards Journal] Muddy Creek Encampment. First 50 built a bridge across the creek this morning. Sixth 50 came up and passed over before the bridge was completed. First 50 passed on west by north, the distance of 5 miles, to a grove of timber on the east bank of east branch of Grand River where they encamped about 1 p.m. in a field or garden of onions about 6 inches high. At 2 oÂ'clock and 3 p.m., President Young and H. G. Sherwood rode up the branch and selected a location for a settlement and resting place for some of the brethren. At 10 minutes to 3, the first tree was cut down for rails. At 3, commenced cutting wood for a coal pit. At ½ past 3, Elder Thomas S. J. Lee commenced digging the first well. Immediately after, Lebius J. Coons commenced another. Dr. Richards planted the first hill of corn and potatoes. This afternoon, President Young and Sherwood returned about dark, reporting that they could not find so good a location for resting as the one which we are at. The grass over the flats is about 8 inches high, the leaves on the buckeyes about 2 inches. Some of the oaks are in bloom.
