Mormon History, 1848

2nd edition "May Martin: Or The Money Diggers, A Green Mountain Tale" By D. P. Thompson (original edition 1835).
This version ... adds such fascinating supposed historical details as a traveler in western Vermont who "hired himself out to a farmer for a month" to search for buried treasure shortly after the Revolutionary War; an old man living in Canada who still knew where a buried treasure lay in Vermont; bizarre ceremonies and magical rites used to find buried gold and silver; and ". . . a youngish man, who appears to have been a person of considerable adroitness and address" who duped local treasure enthusiasts into paying for his services, including "the art of laying the ghost" (i.e., subduing the spirit which guarded the secret cache).
