Mormon History, Oct 8, 1848

[Hosea Stout Diary] Sunday Oct. 8th 1848. Conference met. The authorities passed the usual ordeal. Father John Smith appointed Patriarch of the whole church & C. C. Rich Prest of this place & John Young & Erastus Snow his councillors
The Prest then spoke against [Horace] Gibbs & [Andrew] Cahoon speculations in goods. D. Pedigrew A. L. Fulmer E. Gardner & myself &c were appointed to take up all loose cattle and put into a stray pen the owners to pay 50 cents for each animal put in which was for our pay for doing the same[.] This was done because cattle were let run at large often breaking into and destroying the grain & other eatables and every thing that could be had been said to prevent it & this kind of a force put was then adopted to preserve the grain[.] This very much resembled the Winter Quarters regulations.
My temporal arraingements were now very much altered & I now had to abandon for the time being the idea of building on my lot as I was about to do.
