Mormon History, Jan 24, 1848

A handful of Mormon Battalion members are present at Sutter's Mill on the American River when flakes of gold are discovered there by James Marshall. Two battalion veterans, Henry Bigler and Azariah Smith, document Marshall's discovery in their journals, providing the first written record of the momentous event.
Marshall's discovery eventually precipitates the California Gold Rush the following year.
