Mormon History, Jan 24, 1848

Latter-day Saint Henry Bigler records in his journal James W. Marshall's discovery of gold at Sutter's Mill on the South Fork of the American River in California. This discovery sparks the California Gold Rush. Bigler had been a member of the Mormon Battalion and, along with several other Latter-day Saints, was hired by Sutter to construct a mill following the battalion's discharge the previous summer.
