[Apostle Wilford Woodruff Journal] 11th ? I spent the day in the camp assisting to gather the volunteers. We had a visit from Col Cane from the City of Washington confirming the declaration that President Polk had sent for 500 Mormon volunteers. He informed us that the President was vary favorable to our people And had taken this course for our good. Col Cane manifested the spirit of a Gentleman And much interest in our welfare. From the information we recieved from him we were convinced that God had began to move upon the heart of the President And others in this Nation to begin to act for our interest And the general good of Zion.
The object of President Polk now is to enlist 500 of the Latter Day Saints Arm feed Cloth & pay them, And let them go direct to Calafornia via Santa fe & take possession of that Country, And prepare a way for the body of the Church to Come which will make us the first settellers of that Country.
