[Hosea Stout Diary] Thursday, January 8th 1846. (Went to see a stove to buy)Met the guard as before and rode down the river below Hibbards and wattered the Horses and I then met with the Lodge and then to B Jones and to the Temple & came homeA. J. Stout came then in the mein timeAfter dinner met the guard as usual at 3 & rode North East to the edge of the city & regulated the guard & police & came home before dark. This evening William Taylor came across the prairie from the North of Carthage & said he saw seven men going from towards Appanoose towards Carthage with a cannon and bearing a large red flagThe cannon was drawn by four horses.
