[Hosea Stout Diary] Sund Apl 2nd 1848. Hard South Wind all day.today a fire broke out in Gates haythe South wind blew furiously the fire. Had it blown any other direction the town would have been burnt to ashes before the people could have escaped for the dry hay was scattered over town so that the fire could communicate with all the stock yards in a few minutes. It was an awful sight to see this fire in our situation. In the evening the people turned out and covered up the fire after it had burnt down some what and a guard was put over it to keep it from kindling in which case if the wind should change the town might be consumed. The confusion of the people on this occasion was great.
This evening Elder Hyde came here on the hot search of Tremain who was spoken of on the 13th inst. And Wm Bird, who we knew nothing about. But as for Tremain we told him he was "banished" from our Territory.
