[Hosea Stout Diary] Wednesday June 23rd 1847. Met at sun rise to here the report to the company and found that it was going to be a hard matter to raise horses for some would neither go themselves nor lend their horses so I saw the ferry man, Br Higbee and had him not to cross any horses over the river untill we were gone & sent men to press all the horses in town or have the owners go along with them. By this operation we soon brought many horses to bear on the expedition.
Also sent several men over the river & to the upper farms on this side for men & horses. There was several pressed and brought over in a short time. Sent 6 men on guard today.
At 5 oclock the company met again as previously understood to report after being buisly engaged all day in raising horses & men and found that we had thirty horses only could now be depended upon â€"
