[Hosea Stout Diary] Tuesday June the 22nd 1847. Went out on guard with 4 men[.] There was a council in the evening to which I was notified to appear[.] It was to consider upon a letter just recieved from Elder Hyde stating that there was to be a demand made by Mitchel, the Pottewattamie Agent, upon the Omahas for the man who shot Wetherbee & that 100 men would be raised at the Point to cross over to Bel-vue on next Thursday morning and desired 50 men to be raised here and put under my command and met them at 9 oclock A. M. with the intention of making war on the Omahas in case they did not give up the murder and also the one who killed the man found dead on the Horn by our people
The letter also stated that the expedition would be lead by Mr Mitchel in person.
The council decided to fulfill the requisition and ordered me to proceede forthwith to raise the company which I did by calling on all present who were willing to volunteer which many did and appointed sun rise in the morning to meet to report our situation.
