[Hosea Stout Diary] Monday Jany 12th 1846. This morning about 2 oclock A. m. I was awoke by Joseph Taylor who had come from the Temple to let me know that the troops from Carthage were coming in and I immediately arose and went to the Temple and found some of the guard presentThe Twelve were some of them up and on the ground and so I sent out spies to see where they had gone to.Near daylight I was informed that they had taken Andrew Colton and sent him to carthage and a party remained till day for what we knew not.In the mein time I had sent for all the guard to be called together at the Temple and there be ready for an emergency.and also sent Capt D. McArthur with a company to watch their movements,They went down on the flat after breakfast and began to enquire of the children for certain men as was their custom at the same time Col Scott was watching them. They were very insolent and insulting. They passed by the Temple & I and Hunter & some more joined the company who was watching them & they threw
out some insults about us for keeping after them.At last we told them that we considered our selves abused and insulted by them for coming in the way that they did & that no gentleman would do it.and also that before we would have the city thrown into an alarm as they had caused it to be by their frequent military displays of power which was altogether unconstitutional & uncalled for, we would resist them & that the next time they attempted to patrol our streets by night we would be the death of them for we had rather die than be treated with such tyranny as we had been by Major Warren and his troops and many more thing we said for we had come to the conclusion that we would shoot the next set of armed men who came in our midst with out giving us notice of their coming which they would if they were men who respected the right of others
After which they put for carthage & we continued our guarding till about noon and then dismissed them till three and I went Hunters and took dinner & met the guard at 3 and rode down the river and wattered as heretofore and regulated the guard and policy for to night and then went near my house & dismissed the troops and went home and saw my family and then went with Hunter to the Store & to Temple & Allen Stouts and then to J. D. Hunters and to the Temple where I intended to stay all night.all was now peace
I remained in the Temple all night.
