[Minutes, Quorum of Twelve] Nov[ember]. 13. 1847. 10 A.M. Meeting in the Council House. Present[:] Pres[iden]ts. [Brigham] Young, [Heber C.]
Kimball, [Orson] Pratt, [Willard] Richards, [Wilford] Woodruff, [George A.] Smith, & [Ezra T.]
Benson, Joseph Young, N[ewell]. K. Whitney, W[illia]m. W. Phelps, Phinehas Young, Conversing about the Trustees in Nauvoo.
Phelps spoke about Sidney [Rigdon]. Sidney considered as being first councillor he ought to lead the Church-but he found the Lord was ag[ain]st him, [and] he then made a Cov[enan]t. with the mammon of unrighteousness, got a Farm at Chambersburg-[and] admitted that the Twelve were the proper persons to lead the Ch[urch]. [T]he Lord was with them. [and he] spoke of [James]
Strang, [William] McLellan, Bil Smith & others-[H]e said the L[or]d. was aga[in]st them if Sidney was to come back. [H]e said he sho[ul]d "[h]av[e] to cut bait & fish too", he had been in high standing & co[ul]d never get back again to his standing while the present leaders held their place-
Letter was read from Charles B. Thompson-St. Louis. -Alexander Badlam (in the East)
Letter of-W[illia]m. I. Appleby [is] appointing George Thompson & Calvin K. Clark to vis[i]t the Eastern Churches, &c., read, Phelps, [T]he Pope of Rome never delegated such power to any men-[S]uch power must come from the Twelve only. In St. Louis there are about 500 brethren, they are basted twice a day on Sundays-
Young[: T]he Saints will have bro Felt to attend to their Spiritual wants from Sunday morn[ing] to Sat[urda]y. night-& keep up a respectable hall, & Instruments of music-
Phelps & Benson spoke about Ira E. West wanting to go East after some property.
Kimball-W[illia]m King is going to Boston On Tuesday-[H]e is a trusty man as far as I have a knowledge-
Phelps went out to get a press-[A]t nauvoo [we] Co[ul]d. not raise any thing-[We] went on & got means-afterwards I got a motto line [of] "God & I" and I got all I wanted-I called a meeting to find how much money co[ul]d. be got in Boston-[B]r Badlam is a whole man-& he makes the brethren feel it-I said "suppose we sh[oul]d. send a draft for money in the Spring"-
[T]hey passed a resulution "If ten thousand dollars should be called for, it will come"-[and] when this money comes, remember it is not borrowed-[T]hat press & type is not borrowed, but it is out of whole cloth-they belong to the Church-[Y]ou will have to send a responsible man to bro.
Badlam-Barnes & Bradley /Dudley/ & Aunt Polly Voce will back him up-[O]ld uncle Neil gave Babbit [$]900. last Spring-[T]he Old man will help. Disbro & others in Batavia can help-

Young[: A]ll those men who have money will fiddle it away & when they have got rid of it, they will come & want the Church to support them.
Josh. Young spoke about the Cow that the Omahas killed-[He] has borrowed [$]1500 to pay for this property to bro. Welch-
Whitney[:] I never promised to pay that money-[I]f we can raise it by contribution we will-
Phelps has some writing paper for the Recorders office-[with a] letter & Cap-
Young[:] I should not wonder if Sidney should come back yet.
Phelps[:] Picket is in the Republican Office-Elias Smith & Babbit have done me an injury-[T]he Twelve permitted me to print 1000 copies of the D&C-Babbit sold /some of/ them under my nose-
Young[:] I think it well to get the Hi[gh] Priests-70s. & Elders & see if we cant send 1 or 200 Elders to gather up the Saints to this place-[L]et the English brethren come here & go over to the valley-[T]ake some of the Twelve to watch them, & if men dont carry themselves straight, cut them off.
Smith-[T]he place is now located-[and] we know where to send them.
Young[: T]here is no Presidency of the Hi[gh] Priests & Elders-[G]ather those who are here at this place-& again at the Musquito mill-
Kimball[: A] man sho[ul]d. be sent to Philadelphia to supersede bro. Appleby-
Richards[: T]hat is already done-[B]ro Little is gone-
Phelps told his dream-[T]he United States are good for Soap grease-[John E.] Page is near Voree tilling the ground-
G. A. Smith[:] I move that the Elders, 70s., & Hi[gh] Priests W Richards[:] I move that Bishop Whitney call the Hi[gh] Priests [and] tog[ethe]r. & give find out their condition & report to us a week from tomorrow evening-E T Benson [seconded].
Young[: S]end out 50 Hi[gh] Priests, 100 Seventies, & as many Elders as you can get-[G]et responsible me to oversee all this matter-
Richards[:] I am ready to go-[P]ut me where you have a mind to-
Jos. Young W W. Phelps[:] I motion that W[illia]m. Snow gather the Hi[gh] Priests together on the other side of the River-[F]ind out their condition in regard to going over the mountains, or going a preaching, & make a report in ten days.
H.C. Kimball seconded-carried.
Young[:] I feel that we ought to help the big Wheel a going.
G. A. Smith[:] I motion that we adjourn-W Richards second[ed]-carried.
[T]o Monday at 10 AM. Young[:] Old Sidney even confesses the God of Heaven will lead the work-[I]f a man must commit iniquity he must get out of sight of the Father, Son, & Holy Ghost-[W]hen a man teaches the doctrine I want to cut him slap off- 1847 Nov[ember]. 13. 6 P.M. Meeting of the Council of the Twelve in one of Pres[iden]t. Young s houses.
Present as they arrived[: Brigham] Young, [Willard] Richards, [George A.] Smith, [Orson]
Pratt, [Ezra T.] Benson, [Thomas] Bullock.
Pres[iden]t. Young suggested the propriety of writing to Major Miller consulting the propriety of removing our houses to the East side of the River, & for Major Miller to remove his Establishment up here, otherwise the Siouxs would destroy this place-
A conversation took place about [a] petition to Congress for territory-(as a blind)
The laws of Iowa take effect in June.
G. A. Smith[:] "I motion that this Council write a letter /to Major Miller/ asking his advice about our removing our buildings and fence poles /that were brought from the East side/ to the East side of the River-and inviting him to remove his Quarters up here." E. T. Benson sec[onde]d.
Carried-
B. Young[:] It will be a good plan for us to go over the river & hold a conference-
O. Pratt[:] And at the same time view the place that El[der]. Hyde spoke of-
B. Young[:] What think you of the Idea of starting a Carrying Company to the mountains of about 50 Wagons-& on return carry Saleratus to this place-to use ox teams-light cattle & Cows-[W]e will want to start from here on account of Flour & provisions-
G. A. S.[: W]e could get the key to the Crow Chief by sending an Elder a Gunsmith-
O. Pratt[: O]ur key to the Utahs is to teach them to raise grain (brother Woodruff came in).
B. Young feels so mortified at the breaking up of our last Winter s work that he is ashamed to think of any Company work-[I]t was a perfect insult to me-I want all the Saints to be on the alert to make claims on the other side-building houses, splitting rails, &c &c. I wont suffer any man to go into the State, who shall have more than one wife with him, as it would do more injury to the cause than good-If I were going to preach, I should want all my women who had children, to go over the mountains that they might rear them. (H[eber]. C. Kimball came in) [The] vote [was] read & approved-
G. A. Smith[:] I motion that we write to the heads of the missionaries suggesting to them to purchase our best buildings, mi &c suitable for School rooms, Dwellings &c. H. C. Kimball seconded-carried.
H. C. Kimball[:] I will prophecy in the name of the Lord that if we send out faithful men to preach the Gospel, it will bring on an entire reformation among the people-B. Young[:] I say Amen to it-
H. C. Kimball[:] I am ready to go on a mission-B. Y.[:] & I go with you-voted.
G. A. Smith[:] I motion that we write a letter to Pres[iden]t. Allred requesting him to call a /three days/ conference of all the official members /and others/ within fifty miles, on the East side of the River-& we will go over & meet them. O Pratt seconded-carried.
G. A. Smith[: A] man s experience in this Church is a perfect Specimen of every thing. I feel that one of the Twelve should always be in England-[and] another in the Eastern States & another about this plac

O. Pratt[:] We can obtain as much power & influence by stopping here, as we have had any where-If we have too many [illegible]
Conversation renewed about the Importing Company-[T]hey could carry Peltry back, as well as Saleratus-
B. Young[:] I want a circular written & sent to be printed-
H. C. Kimball[:] "I motion that a circular be written"-E. T. Benson second[ed]-carried.
G. A. Smith[:] "I motion that the members of the Council write their suggestions, & hand them to the Clerk of the Council on Monday morning next["]-H. C. Kimball second[ed]-carried.
B. Young-What shall we say to the English Brethren, shall they come up to this place[?]-
W Richards-It would be an important item to have an Agency in New Orleans, to charter boats clear to this place.
H. C. Kimball[:] "I move for an adjournment"-E T Benson second[ed]-carried-
Father Morley to call Pres[iden]t. Youngs Division & right up the Emigration Companies.
Find one or two men who want to go to Nauvoo. Bee on Monday to remove Kitchen. Try the vote about vacating the place.
