[Apostle Willard Richards Journal] Gentle wind from south. In forenoon Dr. [Richards] was in bed and Thomas was removing his family into the Gopher Hill at the foot of Cahoon Street. President Young visited the mill and was met on his return by Richards and Woodruff about 1 p.m. About 2, Presidents Young, Kimball, Richards, Woodruff, and John Smith met at John Smith Jr.Â's and read letters just received from Hyde and Taylor, Liverpool; J. A. Stratton, St. Louis; O. Spencer, Philadelphia. G. A. Smith came in at the close. Brother McLeary was present, having just arrived from St. Joseph's, and said the last he heard from his wife she was on her way to the state of New York to her first husband's father's six months since in company with William Smith.
This afternoon, E. T. Benson and Erastus Snow started to organize a company at Punca, accompanied by O. P. Rockwell, with teams to bring down Bishop MillerÂ's family. Bishop Smoot brought in a mail of six letters from Huntsakers delivered to him by J. M. Grant, $.35 postage due. President Young paid for three of said letters. Dr. [Richards] received 73 lbs. of ha1f a hog from President Young. The seventies met in the council house for conference, but very few attended. They volunteered to bring in 13 loads of wood for the benefit of the council house and make 20 seats or benches 6 ½ feet long for the council house. It was proposed to give one half of the wood to President Joseph Young, but he proposed to give his share to the Music and one load to the Bishop. Presidents Young and Richards came into the council near its close, but soon retired.
