Upon waking to a temperature of "15 degrees below Zero" Wilford Woodruff "set a pot of chaircoal in the bedroom to warm it." After shaving and washing and changing his clothes he and wife Phebe are "overpowered" by carbon monoxide from the charcoal: "It made us most sick. We took the coal out. Aired the room. But it made us most sick we had to go to bed upon it. Later that evening Wilford Woodruff and wife Phebe "met with the quorum of the Twelve and others for instruction." They "were both some unwell from the effects of the coal during the day. Yet we had an interesting time." Wilford Woodruff and wife Phebe receive their second anointing in the room over Joseph Smith's store. Joseph Smith "had some company in the eve from Warsaw &c. Lectured to them on politics, religion, &c." (1)

Joseph meets with the Twelve and others to consider whom to support for the presidency of the United States. Henry Clay (who had told the Saints, "You had better go to Oregon for redress") and Martin Van Buren are the only candidates. It is decided that "it is morally impossible for this people . . . to vote for either candidate." Willard Richards moves that Joseph Smith be a candidate for president on an independent ticket. The motion is carried unanimously. Joseph suggests that missionaries be sent throughout the country to advocate his candidacy. He says, "Tell the people we have had Whig and Democratic Presidents long enough; we want a President of the United States. If I ever get into the presidential chair, I will protect the people in their rights and liberties. . . . The Whigs are striving for a king under the garb of democracy. There is oratory enough in the Church to carry me into the presidential chair the first slide." He works on his political platform with W. W.
Phelps. (History of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (7 volumes) 6:187-89).Gov. Ford sends a letter to the people of Hancock County, stating that he has been called upon to intervene in the increasing problems in the county, but refusing to either aid the Mormons or take away the arms from the Nauvoo Legion. "I believe that there has been nothing like war among you . . . let a state of war ensue, and I will be compelled to interfere with executive power . . . against those who shall be the first transgressors." (History of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (7 volumes) 6:189-90.) (3)

[Joseph Smith Diary] Monday, January 29th 1844 At 10 A.M. The Twelve [Apostles] met at the Mayor's office [with] Joseph and Hyrum [and] J[ohn] P. Green. Moved by Willard Richards and voted unanimously that we have independent electors and that Joseph Smith be a candidate for the next presidency [of the United States] and that we use all honorable means to secure his election.

Joseph said to accomplish this you must send every man in the city who could speak throughout the land to electioneer, [to give] stump speech[es]—[about the] Mormon religion-election Laws &c. &c. Yearsly must go. Parley to N[ew] York. Snow to V[ermon]t. Rigdon to Pa.

"After the April conference we will have gen[eral] conferences all over the nation and I will attend them. Tell the people we have had Whig and Democrats [as] Presidents long enough. We want a President of the United States. If I ever get in the Presidential chair I will protect the people in their rights and liberties. I will not electione[e]r for myself, Hyrum, Brigham, Parley, and Taylor must go. The Whigs are striving for a king under the garb of Democracy. There is oretory enough in the Church to carry me into the Presidential chair the first slide." Cold, very.

Mr. Bedell wanting an election at Warsaw, Benjamin Winchester was appointed to go. Capt[ain] White of Quincy was at the Mansion last night and this morning drank a toast: "May all your enemies be skined, their skins made into drum heads for your friends to beat upon. Also may Nauvoo become the empire seat of government." Capt[ain] White.

Clayton must go out or he will apostatize. Must. Also gave some instructions concerning an address to the paper for Bro[ther] Phelps to write—views on the powers and policy of the Government of United States &c.

A Millerite Lecturer come in to the office with Joseph and Clayton about 5 P.M. [and] had some conversation about Hades and Shaol &c. and Lectured in the evening in the Hall. (4)
