[Black History] Apostles Heber C. Kimball, Orson Pratt and John Page restrict Elijah Abel-s missionary work to his own people. There is no indication from the documentation of this meeting that any of these three Apostles remark upon there being something wrong with Abel-s holding the Priesthood. (6)

[Catholic Church in Utah] In 1873 Archbishop Joseph S. Alemany of San Francisco entrusted the approximately 800 Catholics among Utah's 87,000 inhabitants to Father Lawrence Scanlan (1843-1915). (7)

[Chief Wakara] One observer described Wakara in 1843 as the "principal ruling chief...ow [ing] his position to great wealth. He is a good trader, trafficking with the whites and reselling goods to such as his nation are less skillful in striking a bargain." Wakara was becoming the leader of larger numbers of people as several bands coalesced with the invasion of the Europeans. This larger band came to be known as the Tumpanawach. (8)

[Civil War] Many Mormons in Utah viewed the events in the east as fulfillment of statements made by their prophet/founder Joseph Smith nearly thirty years earlier: "Verily, thus saith the Lord concerning the wars that will shortly come to pass, beginning at the rebellion of South Carolina." In a later statement made in 1843, Smith added: "The commencement of the difficulties which will cause much bloodshed previous to the coming of the Son of Man will be in South Carolina. It may probably arise through the slave question." (9)
