[William Clayton Writings] Fortunately, on Tuesday, the 6th of August, five of the Twelve returned home, viz: Brigham Young, Heber C. Kimball, Lyman Wight, Orson Pratt and Wilford Woodruff. This event appeared very providential. They were just in time to frustrate Elder Rigdon's plans. This they did effectively. (3)
[William Clayton Writings] Tuesday 6th. ... Phelps told me that they had a council and called upon Er Rigdon to say why he was so much disposed to hurry matters &c. He said they should wait untill the Twelve returned. (3)

[Apostle Wilford Woodruff Journal] Aug 7th 1844 I went forth this morning through the city of Nauvoo. Saw many friends & met with the quorum of the twelve at Elder Taylors. We were truly glad to see each other. Br Taylor was getting well of his wounds that he recieved in Jail in company with Joseph and Hiram Smith when they were murdered. We were glad to see Dr Richards who escaped unhurt. We were recived with gladness by the Saints throughout the city. They felt like sheep without a shepherd, as being without a father, as their head had been taken away.
We spent the fore part of the day at Br Tay-lors, and in the afternoon, we met in Council at the Seventies Hall, viz the Twelve, High Council, and High Priest &c. & we herd Sidney Rigdon tell his Story and message which he had to us and the Church. A long Story it was a kind of second Class vision. He said he was appointed to come and offer himself to lead the Church, and many things was said. He was followed by Br Brigham Young and he showed that their could not be any one before the Twelve. A conference was appointed for the whole Church to come together on Tuesday next at 10 oclok. (4)
[Brigham Young] --7-- Attended meeting at the Seventies' Hall with the Twelve and high council, where we heard Sidney Rigdon tell his story and deliver the message he said he had for us. I followed him and showed the brethren the errors and follies which Brother Rigdon manifested on the occasion. (5)
Lyman Wight: Told other apostles 7 Aug. 1844 he wanted no one's instructions except Joseph Smith Jr. 's and his only enemies were at church headquarters q(1)
[Quorum of Twelve] Aug 7 1844 4 P.M. meeting of the Twelve Apostles, High Council, & High Priests at the Seventies Hall.
Pres[iden]t William Marks prayed.
Pres[iden]t B. Young called upon Pres[iden]t Rigdon to make a statement to the church concerning his message to the saints. And vision & revelation he had received. in as much as the leading authorities of
Pres[iden]t Rigdon stated said "The object of his mission was is to visit the Saints, and offer himself to them as a Guardian. I had a vision at Pittsburgh June 27, this was presented to my mind not as an open vision, but rather a continuation of the vision mentioned in the Book of Doc. & Cov., it was shown to me that this church must be built up to Joseph, and that all the blessings we receive must come through him. I have been ordained a spokesman to Joseph and I must come to Nauvoo and see that the church was governed in a proper manner. Joseph sustains the same relationship to this church as he ever has always done, no man can be a successor of Joseph. The kingdom is to be built up to Jesus Christ through Joseph, there must be Revelation still. The martyred prophet is still the head of this church, every Quorum should stand as you have stood [?] your washings and consecrations. I have been consecrated a spokesman to Joseph and I was commanded to speak for him the church
is not disorganized thoÂ' our head is gone. We may have diversity of feelings on this matter. I have been called to be a spokesman unto Joseph and I want to build up the church unto him and if the people want me to sustain this place I want it upon the principle that every individual shall acknowledge it for himself. I propose to be a Guardian to the people and the people can please In this I have discharged my duty and done what God has commanded me, and the people can please themselves whether they accept me or not."
Pres[iden]t B. Young followed with a few said I do not care who leads the church even though it were Ann Lee but one thing I must know and that is what God says about it. I have the keys and the means of obtaining the mind of God on the subject. I know there are those in our midst who will seek the lives of the Twelve as they did the lives of Joseph and Hyrum. We shall ordain others and give the fulness of the Priesthood so that if we are killed the fulness of the Priesthood may remain Joseph conferred upon our heads all the keys and powers belonging to the apostleship, which he himself held before he was taken away, and no man or set of men can get between Joseph and the Twelve in this world or the world to come. How often has Joseph said to the twelve, I have laid the foundation; and you must build thereon, for upon your shoulders the kingdom rests. The Twelve as a Quorum will not be permitted to tarry here long, they will go away abroad and bear off the kingdom of the nat
ions of the earth, and baptize the people faster than mobs can kill them off. I would like were it my privilege to take any valise and travel and preach till we had a people gathered who would be true. My private feelings would be let the affairs of men and women alone — only go and preach and baptize them into the kingdom of God. Yet whatever duty God places upon me, in his strength I intend to fulfil it. I want to see this people with the various quorums of the priesthood assembled together in Special Conference on Tuesday next at 10 A.M. which was carried unanimously by vote. (7)
