Mormon History, Dec 22, 1847

[Hosea Stout Diary] Wed Dec 22nd 1847. Went with a number of the police to search one Mr Long who boarded at D. Russells[.] He was strongly suspicioned to be a spy & also taking notes & reporting all he could glean against us to Fort Kearney & many other such thing When we came we found him ready & waiting for us.having been previously notified of our coming by Phineas H. Young as we soon learned. We however made diligent search & found nothing wrong[.] He treated us most impudently civil & seemed to be perfectly independant.
Immediately after the search I went to the Council of the Twelve yet in session and reported the thing to the President. Telling him that phineas had done. This I done in the presence of Phineas who did not utter a word or attempt to deny it.
We considered his conduct a piece of bass perfidity.
Being admitted in the Council of the Twelve at the time the order was given to me[.] He took that advantage of it and thus betrayed what was going on.
The ballance of the day I was engaged in putting a stop to some of our folks going to a Millitary Ball to be held at the Point on Christmas evening.
In the evening E. T. Benson one of the Twelve was at my house till ten at night[.] He was very much dissatisfied with phineas for what he had done for he said he informed Long of what he had said about him, which gave his enemies the advantage over him when he was away from home but now phineas denies the whole affair.
