[Hosea Stout Diary] At 5 oclock I went to council at Daniel Cahoons House[.] The council adjourned from thence to Harrison Burgess so as to meet with Bp Miller & his men as they wanted some advice in what maner to pursue to procure their provisions &c to the best advantage. The Council proceeded forthwith to the place and Miller and some of his men were there.
They were advised not to go in to Missouri but to stop here and send their oxen to the rushes & let them recruit & Brigham would give his hands work and pay them more than they could get in the settlements in such things as they needed. In the mein time to send some men to buy up the things that they wanted in such a manner that the citizens would not know who they were and thus not raise the price of grain and for Miller not to go to Sarpees as he would know what he was down for and there being many up from the settlements waiting for the payment of the Pottawattamis, the word would go out and they could not do as well by it.Brigham also told Miller that he wanted to have a long talk with him & find out his manner of Deal and living and for Miller to find out his and perhaps each might improve by the other all of which he agreed to do.He said many other thing which I need not now mention
President Young spoke on the subject of stockading the place. There was a committee appointed of the council to locate the line and a meeting to be called at sunrise in the morning to let the people know where to build so as to be on the line.came home about 9 oc â"
