[Hosea Stout Diary] Friday Dec 24th 1847. Went to the General Conference at Millers Point, in company with Zera Pulcifer. Conference was held in a very large log House called the Tabernacle. The day was mostly spent in preparing for business.
O. Pratt spoke at length on the policy of electing a First President. That God had saw proper to govern the Church by the Twelve since the death of Joseph the Prophet and that he could govern it by whatever authority he was proper even by teachers and deacons. There was a time when this Church was governed by the Lesser Priesthood[.] But now the Lord manifested by his Spirit that it was best to appoint a First Presidency again that the organization of the Church might be perfected and the Twelve have a chance to spread abroad again to the nations &c. His discourse was very interesting and was recieved with breathless silence. The Spirit rested down upon the whole congregation.
In the evening President Young requested me to take some three or four more of the police and go down to "Point au pool" to watch the moves of the officers and other persons at the Millatary Ball held at that place.
Accordingly I took Elias Gardner, L. N. Scovil and Luman H. Calkins. Got a span of horses and waggon of Daniel Miller and started just before dark[.] We arrived at the Point earley in the evening about 7 miles
We were well recieved by all who knew us. Were taken in, had our suppers in the best of style. It was soon shispered around amongst the whole company who we were and our business was naturley known by some. All seemed to pay due regard to us. We were invited to partake in all their dancing & drinking always giving us the opportunity to dance oftener than any one else. We passed off the night very agreeably. Took breakfast paid one dollar each for our trouble & came back to conference earley the next morning.
Before the Ladies the officers were very civil as long as they were sober enough;but in the Barroom they were exceedingly vulgar.
