[Hosea Stout Diary] Thursday Sept 3rd 1846. I was about camp today and in the evening went to the council at D Russell and heard Orson Pratt make the report of his mission to the Otos and Omahas which was in substance as followsthat he in company with those who were with him called and had an interview with the Otos but could not get any thing from them whether they were willing we should winter here or not as the main Chief was not present but they said that the land belonged to them for one mile above the old garrison and that they said that they would call in a day or two and let us know about it[.] He left them and went to the Omahas and got the article signed by the chiefs[.] This article was in substance what was talked over on the 28th
They said that they could not spare their young men unless we would sent them as manu of ours to help them[.] He then stated to them how we had been driven & how our Great Chief found a book and what was in it about them and because we believed it and practiced it we were driventhey listened with breathless silence
They said that they were going to send a party of their young men against the Souix to be revenged on them for killing one of their chiefs and that they urged to come by here and give us a dance that their young warriaurs might enjoy themselves while they lived to which he tried to prevent but they seemed to be very anxious to come &This is not all that that was said but the particulars.
