[Lucy Mack Smith] Augustine Spencer assaults his brother, Orson Spencer, and resists arrest. Marshal John P. Greene asks for help from Chauncy L. Higbee and Charles and Robert Foster, who refuse, leading to their own arrests and an attempted assault on Joseph. (1)

Theodore Turley polygamous marriage to Sarah Ellen Clift (2)

Theodore Turley marries his third plural wife, Sarah Ellen Clift. (3)

Augustine Spencer, Robert D. Foster, Charles Foster and Chauncey L. Higbee were arrested and fined, in Nauvoo, for assault and resisting the officers. (4)

Ezra Taft Benson: Sealed to Adaline Brooks Andrus (plural wife) on 27 April 1844. Three children: George Taft, Florence Adeline, and Frank. (5)

Wilson Law and Robert D. Foster claim that Joseph Smith kept a gang of robbers and plunderers about his house, with Smith receiving half of the spoils. Foster says Smith tried to get him to kill Boggs [per 2-May, 1844 affidavit of Aaron Johnson]. (6)

[Joseph Smith] Robert Foster's trial begins in the municipal court. Joseph tries to make a peaceful settlement with Foster, but Foster refuses. Joseph announces that he will no longer make overtures toward Foster: "The skirts of my garments were free from his (Foster's) blood; I have made the last overtures of peace to him; and then delivered him into the hands of God, and shook my garments against him as a testimony thereof." (History of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (7 volumes) 6:345.) (7)

[Joseph Smith Diary] Saturday, April 27th 1844 A large company of Gentlemen from St. Louis and other places on the river called at the Mansion and when they returned to the boat it was gone. They returned to the Mansion.

9 A.M. R[obert] D. Foster come up for trial. After much conversation with the Mayor in which he charged Joseph with many crimes [like] Daniteism in Nauvoo, and a great variety of vile and false Epithets and charges. Court adjourned to Monday 9 A.M. Foster agreed to meet Joseph on 2d Monday of May at the stand and have a settlement. Foster then said he would publish it [in the] Warsaw paper. Joseph told him if he did not agree to be quiet [and] not attempt to raise a mob and [threaten violence] he would not meet him. If he would be quiet he would publish it in Neighbor. Foster would not agree to be quiet and Joseph said he was free from his (Foster) blood had made the last overtures of peace, [and] delivered him into the hand of God and shook his garments against him.

Joseph continued in office some time in conversation and then went into the Big Room and read the Warsaw Signal about Mormonism.

Elder L. R. Foster arrived from N[ew] York. Elder Hiram Clark arrived from Liverpool with 150 passengers. Meeting at the stand at one o'clock to give instructions to the Elders going out Electioneering addressed by Pres[iden]t Rigdon and W[illia]m Smith. (8)

Ezra T. Benson polygamous marriage to Adeline B. Andrus (2)

Ezra Taft Benson is sealed to his first plural wife, Adeline Brooks Andrus. (3)

[High Council Minutes] High Council met according to adjournment at the residence of President Marks. No buisness. Adjourned till the 4th day of May Proximo at one o'clock P.M.

[Anointed Quorum] Sunday evening prayer circle, first since March; Joseph Smith did not attend because "I had been suddenly taken sick" . (10)

[Apostle Wilford Woodruff Journal] 28th Sunday I attended meeting in the evening with all the quorums of the elders to prepare for our missions. (11)

[Joseph Smith] While Hyrum Smith is preaching that "there were prophets before, but Joseph has the spirit and power of all the prophets," William and Wilson Law, Higbee, Foster, and others meet at Wilson Law's home to begin a new, "reformed" church. Calling Joseph a fallen prophet, they choose a replacement. William Law is made president of the new church, Austin Cowles and Wilson Law are made counselors, and a Council of the Twelve is called. They decide to order a press to publish their own views (History of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (7 volumes) 6:346-47.) They have about 200 followers. (7)
