[Joseph Smith Diary] Tuesday, February 14th 1843 Read proof of some of the Book of [Doctrine and] Covenants with W[illiam] W. Phelps. German Lesson from 9 1/2 to 11 A.M. Stove removed from the Mayor's office to the smoke house which is designed for the Mayor's office till a new one can be built. Mr. Cowan arrived from Shokokon. Much conversation with various individuals. Sold Dr. [Willard] Richards a cow. (2)

-- Feb 15, 1843
Nauvoo, Illinois. Joseph Smith published a letter in the Times and Seasons containing a parable about the libel and persecutions he had received from the press. (3)

[Joseph Smith] Joseph publishes the parable "The Lions of the Press," satirizing the various publishers and writers who constantly treat Mormonism. Some writers are symbolized by lions and other animals (1)

[Joseph Smith Diary] Wednesday, February 15th 1843 Helped change the top plate of the office stove. After reading in the Alton paper about the Libellous letter written to Mr. Bassett of Quincy about Judge Pope, Butterfield, and the Ladies attending the trial at Springfield.
About noon /1 o'clock/ started for Shokokon with Cowan, O[rson] Hyde, and P[arley] P. Pratt in sleighs. Previous to starting W[illia]m Law gave 1 barrel flour, 5 bushels Meal, and 10 bu[shels] of brann. When we come on the prairie it was so cold I proposed to Mr. Cowan and wait till the morrow, but he chose to go forward. We arrived safely at Mr. Rose's, where we had supper and gave long exposition of Millerism. Slept with Mr. Cowan. (2)

-- Feb 16, 1843
[Joseph Smith Diary] Thursday, February 16th 1843 After breakfast I started with Mr. Cowan and Bro[thers] Hyde and Pratt started from Michael Crane's to go to Shokokon 5 miles.
On the way [Elders] Hyde and Pratt turned over and [Elder] Hyde hurt his hand. Their horse ran away and we brought him back. We dined at /Mr./ Quin[n]'s Mills and went to Shokokon and viewed the place which is very desirable for a city.
When we returned to the place of dining, Elder Hyde prayed [and] I preached to a large and attentive audience 2 hours from 19 Rev[elation], 10 verse and shewed them that any man who denied his being a prophet was not a preacher of righteousness. They opened their eyes and appeared well pleased and had a good effect.
After meeting when we had returned as far as Mr. Quinn's Mills, Mr. Cowan turned up to the fence and proposed to call. While waiting a moment Mr. Crane's horse (for he went with our company) which was behind ran and jumped into our sleigh as we jumped out and thence over our horses and the fence sleigh and all, fence 8 rails high and both horses ran over lots and through the woods clearing themselves from the sleighs and had their frolic out without hurting themselves or riders. It was truly a wonderful feat and as wonderful a deliverance of the parties.
We took supper at Mr. Crane's and I staid at Mr. Rose's. Dr. Richards invited [the] brethren to come on Monday and pile up and chop wood for the President. (2)

[Joseph Smith Sermon] Remarks at the Mansion House during dinner at Nauvoo, Ill. on Saturday February 18,
While at dinner, I remarked to my family and friends present, that when the earth was sanctified and became like a sea of glass, it would be one great urim and thummim, and the Saints could look in it and see as they are seen. (5)

-- Feb 18, 1843
Nauvoo, Illinois. Joseph Smith taught that the earth would eventually be a urim and thummim. (3)

[Joseph Smith] At dinner Joseph tells his family that "when the earth was sanctified and became like a sea of glass, it would be one great urim and thummim, and the Saints could look in it and see as they are seen." This is the first mention of this doctrine, which will be given in more detail in D&C 130. (History of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (7 volumes) 5:279.) (1)

[Joseph Smith Diary] Saturday, February 18th 1843 About house and office. Mostly some at High Council in store or Lodge Room. Ells on trial from Laharpe. Several called for council on Law. One /Christopher Dixon/ against Nauvoo house. Carlos Granger called. Esqu[ire] Warren called; [he] had hurt his horse. Said it was not the first time he had missed it by not following Joseph's advice. At dinner Joseph said, "When the earth was sanctified and become like a sea of glass it would be one great Urim and Thummin [and] the Saints could look in it and see as they are seen."

[Apostle Wilford Woodruff Journal] 12 Sunday I spent the time at home writing. (4)

George J. Adams is charged with adultery after returning to Nauvoo from his mission with a wife in addition to his Nauvoo wife. He is restored to full fellowship three months later, and a TIMES AND SEASONS announcement says he has been "honorably acquitted of all charges." (5)

[Joseph Smith] Joseph answers several inquiries concerning the end of the world in the coming spring as predicted by William Miller. The Prophet says that Millerism is false because the prophecies that must precede Christ have not all yet been fulfilled. (6)

[Joseph Smith Diary] Sunday, February 12th 1843 Some 7 or 8 young men called to see me, part of them from the city of N[ew] York. They treated me with the greatest respect. I shewed them the fallacy of Mr. Miller's data concerning the Millerism and preached them quite a sermon. Shewed them that the error is in the Bible or translation and that Miller is in want of information. The Prophecies must be fulfilled; sun be turned into darkness, moon into black and many more things before Christ come. (7)

[Joseph Smith Diary] Monday, February 13th 1843 Elder Rigdon came in early in the morning and gave a brief history [of] the 2d visit of the Presidency to Jackson Co[unty], Missouri.

[He] also [gave] a dollar in cash from Sister Davis of the same place. John C. Annis come in for council about wood taken from Iowa and got it. The Marshall come in and stated that one Ralston was trying to get the Post office and Dr. Foster had signed the Petition for the first one. Gave instruction concerning bonding 1/8 of the lot north of his dwelling to John Oakley for $500 dow[n] [and] $100 in 3 months.
1/4 [to] 4 P.M. [Joseph] said he would go to printing office with W[illiam] W. Phelps.
Evening at O[rson] Hyde's with Bro[ther] Dixon from Salem, M[a]ss[achusetts]. [Joseph] said that those who come here having money and purchased without the Church and without council must be cut of[f] and many observations which aroused Bro[ther] Dixon's feelings much.
Copy [of a petition] to the Hon[orable] Mr. Bryant, 2nd Ass[istan]t [to the] P[ost] M[aster] General.
We, your petitioners, beg leave respectfully to submit that as an attempt is now, by certain individuals, being made to place the Post Office in this place into hands of William H. Rollison a stranger in our place, and one whose conduct since he came here, has been such as to forbid our having confidence in him, and we do hope and pray, both for our sakes, and that of the public, that he may not receive the appointment of Post Master in Nauvoo, Ill[inois] but that the present Post Master may continue to hold the office.
Bro[ther] J[oseph] Smith, If the foregoing can have a number of respectable subscribers I believe Rollison cannot get the office. I should like to have it so as to send it out on Sunday's mail.

Wilford Wodruff writes: "At about half past Seven oclock in the evening the sword which had made its appearance for several evenings past moved up near the moon & formed itself into a large ring around the moon. Two Balls immediately appeared in the ring opposite of each other sumthing in the form of sundogs. Another half ring is hung from those Balls sumthing in the shape of a horse shoe extending outside of the first ring with one line running through the center of the moon." He draws a picture in his journal of the phenomenon. Four days earlier he had written, "I Wilford Woodruff testify that about 7 oclock PM I discovered a stream of light in the south west quarter of the heavens. The rays of Light were in the form of a Broadsword with the hilt downward . . .The following is the declaration of Joseph the Seer conserning the foregoing sign: As sure as there is a God who sits enthroned in the heavens & as sure as he ever spoke to me So sure there will be a spe[e]dy & Bloody
war & the broad sword seen last evening is the sure sign thereof." (5)

Joseph Smith explains the "three grand keys" for the detection of angels and false spirits. His instructions later make up Doctrine and Covenants 129. (1)
-- Feb 9, 1843
[D and C] Doctrine and Covenants 129: Instructions given by Joseph Smith the Prophet, at Nauvoo, Illinois, February 9, 1843, making known three grand keys by which the correct nature of ministering angels and spirits may be distinguished. HC 5: 267.
1-3, There are both resurrected and spirit bodies in heaven; 4-9, Keys are given whereby messengers from beyond the veil may be identified. (2)
Section 129, Place: Nauvoo, Hancock County, Illinois.
Historical Note: The substance of section 129 was revealed to Joseph Smith before 1843. Although the exact date of his receiving these principles of detecting false spirits is not known, it can safely be set before 27 June 1839. On that day members of the First Presidency and Quorum of Twelve met in council in Nauvoo, and in this meeting the Prophet presented the following instructions for the benefit of the Twelve prior to their leaving for England:.
In order to detect the devel when he transforms himself nigh unto an angel of light. When an angel of God appears unto man face to face in personage & reaches out his hand unto the man he takes hold of the angels hand & feels a substance the same as one man would in shaking hands with another he may then know that it is an angel of God & he should place all confidence in him Such personages or angels are Saints with their resurrected Bodies, but if a personage appears unto man & offers him his hand & the man takes hold of it & feels nothing or does not sens[e] any substance he may know it is the devel, for when a Saints whose body is not resurrected appears unto man in the flesh he will not offer him his hand for this is against the law given him.
On the evening of 7 February 1843, Parley P. Pratt arrived in Nauvoo from his mission to England. Two days later, while he was in conversation with the Prophet Joseph Smith, the keys of detecting false spirits (section 129) were explained. The Prophet's scribe, William Clayton, was present and recorded section 129, and Clayton's account was the source for the 1876 publication of the revelation.
Compare the following entry in the Joseph Smith Diary for 9 February 1843. Although this entry, in the hand of Willard Richards, is abbreviated and unclear as a result of poor punctuation, the substance is essentially the same. The Joseph Smith Diary entry is undoubtedly based on Clayton's report.
Parley Pratt & others came in & Joseph explained the following there 3 asministerer Angels, spirits Devils--one class in heaven angels the spirits of just men made perfect--innumerable co of angels & spirits of just men made perfect an angel appears to you how will you prove him. ask him to shake hands If he has flesh & bones. he is an angel. "spirit hath not flesh & bones" spirit of a just man made perfect person in its tabernacle could hide its glory if David Patten or the Devil come. how would you determine should you take hold of his hand you would not feel it. If it were a false administration. he would not do it. True spirit will not give his hand The devil will Three keys.
Publication Note. Section 129 was first published in the Deseret News (23 April 1856) and was included as section 129 in the 1876 edition of the Doctrine and Covenants. (3)
Nauvoo, Illinois. Joseph Smith received Doctrine & Covenants 129, a revelation about the nature of heavenly beings, stating that there are two kinds of beings in heaven, resurrected angels who have bodies of flesh and bones and the spirits of just men made perfect. (4)
[Joseph Smith] Joseph receives D&C 129. (5)
-- Feb 9, 1843 (Thursday)
Joseph Smith received by revelation three grand keys, by which bad angels, or spirits, may be known. (Doc. and Cov., Sec. 129.) March 1843 A "Young Gentlemen's and Ladies' Relief Society" was organized at Nauvoo, with Wm. Cutler as president. March 1843 Joseph Smith studied the German language. (6)
-- Feb 10, 1843
[Joseph Smith] In mayor's court, Joseph sentences a man who claimed to have been visited by the "Ancient of Days" several times; he is charged with having stolen some goods from a store. He is sent to Carthage jail because he cannot pay the $5,000 bail. (5)

Friday, February 10th 1843 Conversation with Strangers and others. Reviewed the History of the Mob in Hyrum and the first Journey to Missouri.
3 o'clock P.M. in court room with B[righam] Young, H[eber] C. Kimball, Orson Hyde, P[arley] P. Pratt, Orson Pratt, Wilford Woodruff, John Taylor, Geo[rge] A. Smith, and Willard Richards according to previous appointment by Pre[siden]t Joseph at 3 1/2 P.M. Let business be presented in short. No explaination.
Had an interview with Mr. Cowan this morning. He is a  delegate from the inhabitants 20 miles above this, opposite Burlington /viz. Shokokon/ to come to Nauvoo and petition that a talented Mormon preacher take up his residence with them [and] they would find him a good house and give him support with liberty to invite as many Mormons to settle in that place as they please to so to do. Decided that Bro[ther] [John] Bear go and preach to them.
Observation concerning theiving and the Post office and suggested that a general Meeting be called and that Elder Geo[rge] J. Adams be silenced and called to Nauvoo with his family. /Requested that all business be presented without comments
/5 o'clock P.M. Adjourned and immediately Oliver Olney and Newell Nurse were brought in by Sheriff J[ohn] D. Parker as prisoners for stealing goods from the Store of Moses Smith on the night of the 23d of January last. Olney confessed before the Mayor's court that he had been visited many times by the Ancient of Days.
[Mr. Olney stated,] "Sat with him on the 9th, 10[th], and 11[th] days of June last and shall sit in council with ancient of days on Tuesday next. Have had a mission from him to the 4 Quarters of the world and have been [and] have established the 12 stakes of Zion. I have visited them all but one in the south. I have suffered much for 2 or 3 years, been without clothes and suffered much. I despise a thief, but to clothe myself I opened the store of Moses Smith on the eve[ning] of 23d of January by boring into a board window and took out the goods present (several Hundred peices) hid them in the cornfield and carried them home from time to time under the same roof with Smith. No one knows anything about the robbery but myself. [I] found the $50 bill among the goods. Mrs. had a piece of cloth to make some frocks."
Witnesses: Harriet Nurse, Mary Olney, Isaac Chase, Joseph Hadlock, Mr. Far, [and] Moses Smith. Decision of court: [that] Mr. Nurse be dischar[ge]d [and] Olney be remanded to prison for trial on bond under $5,000 bonds.
Olney stated that the Church had never taught him to steal or any such thing. Olney was cut off from the Church some time since. [rest of page blank] *

Saturday, February 11th 1843 City council assembled at 10 o'clock A.M. 7 new councillors sworn in, when the Mayor come in and said he had been doing a good deed. Had been conversing with Elder Rigdon and he and his family were willing to be saved. Good feelings prevailed and we have shaken hands together.
A general Election of Petty officers took place. Prophecied to James Sloan, Recorder, that it would be better for him 10 years hence not to say any thing more about [payment of] fees.
Mayor [Joseph Smith] made his Inaugural Address /in which he/ and urged the necessity of the city council acting upon the principle of liberality and of relieving  the city from all unnecessary expences and burthens [burdens]. Not to attempt to improve the city but enact such laws as will promote peace and good order and the people will improve the city. Capitalist[s] will come in from all quarters and Mills, factories, and machinery of all kind and buildings will arise on every hand [and] this will become a great city. [Joseph] prophecied that if the council would be liberal in their proceedings they would become rich.
[Joseph] spoke at considerable length against the principle of pay for every little service rendered and especially that of committees having extra pay  for services.
[Joseph] reproved the Judges of the late Election for not holding the poll open after 6 o'clock when there were many wishing to vote. Judges were Geo[rge] W. Harris, Daniel Spencer, and [blank] Warrington. Dr. Foster took an active part in electioneering for the written opposition ticket and obstructing the passage to the polls. Adjourned at 3 P.M. for one hour.
Assembled at 4 [P.M.] the subject of marketing was introduced when Alderman Harris spoke. B[righam] Young [and] Harris again recommending 2 houses for Marketing. Hyrum Smith advocating the same. Said he, "There is old Aunt Sabrey. She comes to Market with  horse and carriage with her butter and we can accomodate old Au/n/t Sabry."
Mayor said if we began too large we shall do nothing. If the council will give me leave I will build a house, a small one at once and the markitt ought to be holden by the corporation of the house. When built [it] will support itself [and] then we can go on the hill and build another or on[e] larger. Council should hold an influence over the prices in market so that the poor shall not be oppressed. The machanic should not oppress the farmer.
The upper part  of the town has no right to rival us. Here on the bank of the river was where we first pitched our tents, where the sickness and deaths occured. We have been the making of the upper part of town. We have given them the Temple. We began here and let the market go out from this part of the city. Let the upper part of the town be marketed by the waggon till they can build a Market.
Voted that a market house be built, that the committee on public improvements be required to select a piece of ground for Market and the rise of ground on Main St. [be] reported.  Voted that it be left discretionary with the Mayor how large the market shall be. [nine lines left blank]
Changing the furniture in the house to receive Mother Smith in the family. [Brigham] Young and [Willard] Richards wrote G[eorge] J. Adams to come to Nauvoo and silenced him. *

Recently elected Nauvoo mayor Joseph Smith "made his Inaugural Address in which he urged the necessity of the city council acting upon the principle of liberality and of relieving the city from all unnecessary expences and burthens [burdens]. Not to attempt to improve the city but enact such laws as will promote peace and good order and the people will improve the city. Capitalist[s] will come in from all quarters and Mills, factories, and machinery of all kind and buildings will arise on every hand [and] this will become a great city. [Joseph] prophecied that if the council would be liberal in their proceedings they would become rich." (7)
Nauvoo, Illinois. At a city council meeting, Joseph Smith reproved the judges for closing the polls at six o'clock, when there were many wishing to vote. (4)
[Joseph Smith] Joseph interviews the Sidney Rigdon family and finds that good feelings prevail. (5)

W[illia]m Smith said they could not repeal the Nauvoo Charter and the divorce [issue] had better be referred to the courts.
One Gentleman said he understood it was very fruitful at Nauvoo. Two women from his neighborhood who had no children went to Nauvoo  and since have families. W[illia]m Smith said he would explain the lives [or births? as originating?] in the gentlemen's neighborhood before they came to Nauvoo.
John C. Bennett was like Jonah's gourd. He came up like Jonah out of the whale's belly, but when the sun arose he withered. 4 P.M. went out with Frederick [Smith] to slide on the ice. [rest of page blank] *

Thursday, February 9th 1843 Was at the Masonic Hall some time in the forenoon. Conversing with Mr. Remick and trying to effect a Settlement. Remick promised to let Joseph have some notes on a paper Maker in Louisville to pay him and then went off contrary to promise.
/Conversation with Martin Nye and W[illiam] W. Phelps went to Keokuk/ Read many letters, one from Judge Young. Gave a relation of the Mob in Hyrum which was written for the History. [blank] Parley Pratt and others came in.
Joseph explained the following:  "There are 3 administrater[s]: Angels, Spirits, [and] Devils. One [manner of] dress in heaven. Angels [are] the spirits of Just men made perfect. Innumerable co[mpany] of angels and spirits of Just men made perfect. [If] an Angel appears to you how will you prove him? Ask him to shake hands. If he has flesh and bones he is an angel. 'Spirit hath not flesh and bones.' Spirit of a Just man made perfect. Person[age] in its tabernacle could [not] hide its glory.  If David Patten or the Devil come how would you determine? Should you take hold of his hand you would not feel it. If it were a false administrater he would not do it. True spirit will not give his hand. The Devil will. 3 keys.
"A man came to me in Kirtland and told me he had seen an angel dressed so and so. I told him he had seen no angel. There was no such dress in heaven. He got mad and went out in the street and commanded fire to come down out of heaven and consume me.  I laughed at him and told him he was one of Baal's prophets. His God did not hear him. Jump up and cut yourself and he commanded fire from heaven to consume my house.
"When I was preaching in Philadelphia a Quaker wanted a sign. I told him to be still. After sermon he wanted a sign. I told the congregation the man was an adulterer. 'A wicked and adulterous generation' and the Lord to[ld] me in a revelation that any man who wanted a sign was [an] adulterous person. 'It is true'  said one 'for I caught him in the very act which he afterward confessed when he was baptized.'"
Parley Pratt asked for some council and tomorrow evening was appointed before the Quorum of the Twelve [Apostles]. [rest of page blank] *

[Black History] Regarding Negroes in general, Smith states, "At five went to Mr. Sollars- with Elders Hyde and Richards. Elder Hyde inquired the situation of the negro [sic]. I replied, they came into the world slaves mentally and physically. Change their situation with the whites, and they would be like them. They have souls, and are subjects of salvation. Go into Cincinnati or any city, and find an educated negro, who rides in his carriage, and you will see a man who has risen by the powers of his own mind to his exalted state of respectability. The slaves in Washington are more refined than many in high places, and the black boys will take the shine of many of those they brush and wait on. + "Elder Hyde remarked, "Put them on the level, and they will rise above me.- I replied, if I raised you to be my equal, and then attempted to oppress you, would you not be indignant and try to rise above me, as did Oliver Cowdery, Peter Whitmer, and many others, who said I was
a fallen Prophet, and they were capable of leading the people, although I never attempted to oppress them, but had always been lifting them up? Had I anything to do with the negro [sic], I would confine them by strict law to their own species, and put them on a national equalization." (History of the Church, 5:217-218) + Some feel that Smith is referring to Elijah Abel above in the reference to "Cincinnati" as Abel took up residence there for a time. There is only circumstantial evidence to support this. (2)

2 Items I wish to notice Last sabbath.---2 questions saying of Jesus coming John---a greater prophet than John 2d. least in the kingdom of God greater than he. ---
some so blind they wont see. I dont expect I can work Miracles enough to open
greatest prophet. What constituted him.---no prophet, if do no miracles John did no miracles.---
How is it John was considered one of the Greatest of Prophets? 3 things
1st he was trusted with a divine mission of preparing the way before the face of the Lord. ---Trust before or since? no man!---
2d. He was trusted & it was required at his hands to baptize the son of Man. Who ever did that? who had so great a privilege & glory?---son of God into the waters of baptism & beholding the Holy Ghost---in in the sign the form of a dove---with the sign of the dove. instituted before the creation Devil could not come in sign of a dove.---Holy Ghost is a personage in the form of a personage ---does not confine itself to form of a dove---but in sign of a dove.= No man holds this book more sacred than I do. ---
3d. John at that time was the only legal administrator holding the keys of Power there was on Earth. the Keys the Kingdom the power the Glory from the Jews Son of Zachariah by the holy anointing decree of heaven these 3 constituted him the greatest born of woman.
He that is least in the Kingdom is greater than he? who did [DEL: the :DEL] Jesus have reference to? Jesus was looked upon as having the least claim in all gods kingdom.---
He that is considered the least among you, is greater than John! that is myself.---
another question, Law & prophets were until John---since which time the kingdom of heaven is preached & all men press into it. ---
additional proof---to what---I offered you on the last sabbath. that that was the beginning of the Kingdom
Prodigal Son.---when you have heard go & read your bible if the thing are not wring true.---
great deal of speculation. Subject I never dwelt upon---understood by many to be one of the intricate subjects---Elders in this church preach.---no rule of interpretation.---what is the rule of interpretation? Just no interpretation at all. understood precisely as it read.---I have [a] Key by which I understand the scripture---I enquire what was the question which drew out the answer.---
National. Abraham. &c as some suppose 1st place dig up the root---what drew out the saying out of Jesus? Pharisees & scribes murmurred! this man receives sinners & eatheth with them this is the key word. ---to answer the murmuring & questioning of [that] Saducees & Pharisees had is it this man as great as he pretends to be. & eat with publicans & sinners.---Jesus not put to it so but he could have found something of the kind discerned it for nations.--- Men in an individual capacity. all straining on this point is a bubble.---Boy Boys say ought to be hanged can tell it to you.
big folks Presbyterians. Methodists. Baptists &c---despise the ignorance & abomination of this world.---
this man receiveth sinners---he spoke this parable. what man of you having an hundred sheep & 100 saducees & Pharisees If you pharisees & saducees. are in the sheepfold. I have no mission for you sent to look up sheep that are lost will back him up---& make joy in heaven.---hunting after a few individuals laying it on his Shoulder---one publican you despise.---one piece of Silver ---the piece which was lost---Joy in found of the angels over one sinner that repenteth so righteous they will be damned any how you cannot save them rain off from a gooses back---Great I. little you---
certain man had two sons &c. --- am a poor publican a sinner---humbled themselves. spending their bread & living &c Ill return to my fathers house. to Jesus you pharisees so righteous you cannot be touched.---I will arise &c claim not be a pharisee or saducee. I claim not to be a son do not let me starve---nothing about Ephraim Abraham---is not mentioned. all that is meant is brought to bear upon the pharisee. saducee. the publicans & sinners, Eldest son, pharisees & saducees murmuring & complaining---because Jesus sat with publicans & sinners---father came out & entreated when John came baptized all. when Jesus come they were angry & would not go in. dealing of God with individuals men always Righteous always have access to throne of God eats in his fathers home If we interpret this to national, view where is the eldest son?
likened the kingdom to an old womans milk pan---how could Jesus take the kingdom from those who bore no fruit & give it to another.--- is an apple tree no longer a tree because it has no apples? parable of Prodigal son spoken to illustrate this distinction---from the moment John's voice was first heard he was the Prunner on the earth entitled to salvation. on the earth.
Servants of God of the last days myself & those I have ordained, have the priesthood & a mission---to the publicans & sinners---& if the Presbyterians & [two lines left blank].
are in the kingdom. if they are not righteous---what is the result. they are sinners & if they reject our voice they shall be damnded.
If a man was going to hell I would not let any man disturb him.---while we will be the last to oppress we will be the last to be driven from our post---peace be still bury the hatchet & the sword.---the sound of war is dreadfull in my ear. any man who will not fight for his wife & children is a coward & a bastard.
Mohemetans, Presbyterians, &c if ye will not embrace our religion embrace our hospitalities.
Franklin D. Richards "Scriptural Items"
the next sabbath he (Joseph) asked and answered 1st How was John the greatest prophet ever born of a woman 2d How [DEL: was Christ :DEL] is the least in the Kingdom greater than he
Ans to 1st His greatness consisted in 3 things 1st His appointment to prepare the way before the Lord Jesus Christ 2nd His privilege to Baptise him or induct him into his Kingdom 3d His being the only legal administrator in the affairs of the Kingdom that was then on the Earth consequently the Jews had to obey his instruction or be damned by their own Law & Christ fulfiled all righteousness in becoming obedient to the the Law which himself had given to Moses on the mount and thereby magnified it and made it honorable instead of destroying it
Ans to 2nd Query Christ was least in the Kingdom in their estimation or least entitled to their credulty as a Prophet but as in Truth greater than John
{The Holy Ghost cannot be transformed into a Dove but the sign of a Dove was given to John to signify the Truth of the Deed as the Dove was an emblem or Token of Truth}
Times and Seasons 4 (15 May 1843): 200
The Mormons have not yet completed their great Temple, and have no commodious place of worship, but the apostIes and elders preach in private houses on the Sabbath, and at other times, though I seldom attend these latter meetings; but when the weather will admit, they meet in the grove, or on the rough floor of the basement of the Temple, and then the prophet frequently preaches. On one of these occasions I heard him preach concerning the prodigal son.
After naming his text, the prophet remarked, that some one had asked him the meaning of the expression of Jesus, "among those born of the woman there has not arisen a greater than John," and said he had promised to answer it in public, and he would do it then. "It could not have been on account of the miracles John performed, for he did no miracles; but it was,
First, Because he was trusted with a divine mission, of preparing the way before the face of the Lord. Who was trusted with such a mission, before or since? No man.
Second, He was trusted, and it was required at his hand, to baptise the Son of Man. who ever did that? Who ever had so great a privilege or glory? Who ever led the Son of God into the waters of baptism, beholding the Holy Ghost descend upon him in the sign of the Dove? No man.
Third, John, at that time, was the only legal administrator, holding the keys of power there was on earth. The keys, the kingdom, the power, the glory, had departed from the Jews; and John, the son of Zachariah, by the holy anointing, and decree of heaven, held the keys of power at that time."
William Clayton Diary
Pres. Joseph Preached in the Temple on the Prodigal Son and showed that it did not refer to any nation, but was mearly an answer to the remark "he recieveth the sinners and eateth with them," the Temple was crowded with people.

(Sunday). At Temple.
Wilford Woodruff Diary
22d Sunday President Joseph Smith deliverd an interesting discourse at the Temple to [DEL: an inter :DEL] large Congregation among other things he treated upon the kingdom of God & the baptism of John, He remarked some say the kingdom of God was not set up on earth untill the day of pentecost & that John did not preach the Baptism of repentance for the remission of sins But I say in the name of the Lord that the kingdom of God was set up on earth from the days of Adam to the present time. Whenever there has been a righteous man on earth unto whom God revealed his word & gave power & authority to administer in his name. And whare their is a Priest of God, A minister who has power & Authority from God to administer in the ordinances of the Gospel & officiate in the Priesthood of God, theire is the kingdom of God & in Consequence of rejecting the gospel of Jesus Christ & the Prophets whom God hath sent, the judgments of God hath rested upon people Cities & nations in various ag
es ofthe world, which was the Case with the Cities of Sodom & gomoroah who were destroyed for rejecting the Prophets. Now I will give my testimony I care not for man I speak boldly & faithfully & with authority. William Clayton Diary
This A.M. Joseph preached in the Temple. subject arose from two questions proposed from a Lyceum. 1st Did John Baptize for remission of sins? 2nd Whether the kingdom of God was set up before the day of Pentecost or not till then? To the 1st Q. he answered, "he did" It is acknowledged of all men that John preached the gospel & must have preached the 1st principles, if so he must have preached the doctrine of Baptism for the remission of sins for that is the 1st principal of the Gospel and was ordained before the foundation of the world. I next give my own testimony because I know it is from God. On the 2nd question He said Where the oracles of God are revealed there is the kingdom of God. Wherever the oracles of God are & subjects to obey those oracles there is the kingdom of God. What constitutes the kingdom of God? an administrator who has the power of calling down the oracles of God, and subjects to receive those oracles no matter if there are but 3, 4, or 6 there is the k
ingdomof God &c.

[Joseph Smith Sermon] (1)

-- Jan 22, 1843
[Apostle Wilford Woodruff Journal] 22d Sunday President Joseph Smith deliverd an interesting discourse at the Temple to a large congregation. Among other things he treated upon the kingdom of God & the baptism of John. He remarked some say the kingdom of God was not set up on earth untill the day of pentecost & that John did not preach the Baptism of repentance for the remission of sins. But I say in the name of the Lord that the kingdom of God was set upon earth from the days of Adam to the present time whenever there has been a righteous man on earth unto whom God revealed his word & gave power & authority to administer in his name:
And whare theire is a Priest of God, A minister who has power & Authority from God to administer in the ordinances of the Gospel & officiate in the Priesthood of God, theire is the kingdom of God & in consequence of rejecting the gospel of Jesus Christ & the Prophets whom God hath sent, the judgments of God hath rested upon people, cities & nations in various ages of the world, which was the case with the cities of Sodom & gomoroah who were destroyed for rejecting the Prophets.
Now I will give my testimony. I care not for man. I speak boldly & faithfully & with authority. How is it with the kingdom of God? Whare did the kingdom of God begin? Whare their is no kingdom of God their is no salvation. What constitutes the kingdom of God? Whare there is a prophet, a priest, or a righteous man unto whom God gives his oracles there is the kingdom of God, & whare the oracles of God are not there the kingdom of God is not.
In these remarks I have no allusion to the kingdoms of the earth. We will keep the Laws of the Land. We do not speak against them. We never have & we can hardly make mention of the state of Missouri of our persecutions there &c but what the cry goes forth that we are guilty of larceny, Burglary, arson treason & murder &c &c which is fals. We speak of the kingdom of God on the earth not the kingdoms of men.
The plea of many in this day is that we have no right to receive revelations. But if we do not get revelations we do not have the oracles of God & if they have not the oracles of God they are not the people of God. But say you what will become of the world or the various professors of religion who do not believe in revelation & the oracles of God as continued to his Church in all ages of the world when he has a people on earth? I Tell you in the name of Jesus Christ they will be damned & when you get into the eternal world you will find it to be so. They cannot escape the damnation of hell.
As touching the gospel & Baptism that John preached I would say that John came preaching the gospel for the remission of Sins. He had his authority from God & the oricles of God were with him & the kingdom of [God] for a season seemed to be with John alone. The Lord promised Zecheriah that he should have a son, which was a desendant of Aaron & the Lord promised that the priesthood should continue with Aaron & his seed throughout their generations.
Let No man take this honour upon himself except he be Called of God as was Aaron, & Aaron received his Call by Revelation. An angel of God Also appeared unto Zecheriah while in the Temple [and said] that he should have a son whose name should be John & he should be filled with the Holy Ghost. Zechariah was a priest of God & officiating in the Temple & John was a priest after his father & held the keys of the aronic priesthood & was Called of God to preache the Gospel & the kingdom of God & the Jews as a nation having departed from the Law of God & the gospel the Lord prepared the way for transfer-ing it to the gentiles.
But says one the kingdom of God Could not be set up in the days of John for John said the Kingdom was at hand. But I would ask if it could be any nearer to them than to be in the hands of John. The people need not wait for the days of Pentecost to find the kingdom of God for John had it with him, & he came forth from the wilderness crying out repent ye for the kingdom of heaven is at hand as much as to baul out here I have got the kingdom of God & I am coming after you. Ive got the kingdom of God & you can get it & I am Coming after you & if you dont receive it you will be damned & the Scriptures represent that all Jerrusalem went out unto Johns Baptism. Here was a legal administrator, & those that were baptized were subjects for a king & also the laws & oracles of God were there. Therefore the kingdom of God was there, for no man could have better authority to Administer than John & our Savior submitted to that authority himself by being Baptized By John. Therefore the king
dom of God was set up upon the earth even in the days of John.
Their is a difference between the kingdom of God & the fruits & blessings that flow from that kingdom becaus their was more miracles, gifts, graces visions healings, tongues &c in the days of Jesus Christ & the Apostles & on the day of pentecost than under Johns Administration. It does not prove by any means that John had not the kingdom of God; any more than it would that a woman had not a milk pan because she had not a pan of milk. For while the pan might be Compared to the kingdom the milk might be Compared to the blessings of the kingdom.
John was a priest after the order of Aaron & had the keys of that priesthood & came forth preaching repentance & Baptism for the remission of sins but at the same time crys out there cometh one after me more mighter than I the latches of whose shoes I am not worthy to unlose, & christ came according to the words of John, & he was greater than John because he held the keys of Melchisedic Priesthood & the kingdom of God & had before revealed the priesthood to Moses. Yet christ was baptized by John to fulfill all righteousness & Jesus in his teaching says upon this rock I will build my Church & the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. What rock? Revelation.
Again he says except ye are born of the water & the spirit ye cannot inter into the kingdom of God, And though the heavens & earth should pass away my words shall not pass away. If a man is born of the water & the spirit he can get into the kingdom of God. It is evident the kingdom of God was on the earth & John prepared subject for kingdom by preaching the gospel to them & Baptising them & he prepared the way before the savior or came as a fore runner & prepared subject for the preaching of Christ, & Christ preached through Jerrusalem on the same ground whare John had preached & when the Apostles were raised up they worked in Jerrusalem & Jesus commanded them to tarry there untill they were endowed with power from on high. Had they not work to do in Jerrusalem? They did work & prepared a people for the pentecost. The kingdom of God was with them before the day of pentecost as well as afterwords & it was also with John & he preached the same gospel & Baptism that Jesus & the
Apostles preached after him.
The endowment was to prepare the desiples for their mission into the world. Whenever men can find out the will of God & find an Administrator legally authorized from God there is the kingdom of God. But whare these are not, the kingdom of God is not. All the ordinances Systems, & Administrations on the earth is of no use to the Children of men unless they are ordained & authorized of God for nothing will save a man but a leger Administrator for none others will be acknowledge either by God or Angels.
I know what I say. I understand my mishion & business. God Almighty is my shield & what Can man do if God is my friend? I shall not be sacrafised untill my time comes. Then I shall be offered freely. All flesh is as grass & a governor is no better than other men. When he dies he is but a bag of dung.
I thank God for preserving me from my enemies. I have no enmity. I have no desire but to do all men good. I feel to pray for all men. We dont ask any people to throw away any good they have got. We ownly ask them to Come & get more. What if all the world should embrace this gospel? They would then see eye to eye & the blessings of God would Be poured out upon the people which is my whol Soul Amen. (2)

Nauvoo, Illinois. Joseph Smith attended a meeting of the Council of the Twelve, where he told them of a possible future mission throughout the United States, England, and other countries. (5)
[Joseph Smith] Rebaptizes Orson Pratt after reconciliation regarding polygamy. (6)
Joseph Smith tells the Quorum of Twelve that Orson Pratt "had not legally been cut off," then rebaptizes him and reinstates him to the quorum, resulting in the first occasion where there are more than twelve men in the Quorum of Twelve Apostles. (7)
[Orson Pratt] When Orson later received a letter from one of Joseph Smith's detractors seeking to enlist his support, Pratt took the letter to Smith. This show of loyalty restored their friendship, and on 20 January 1843 church leaders declared Pratt's excommunication illegal, reinstated him in the church, and reappointed him as an apostle. (8)

[Quorum of Twelve] Nauvoo January 20th 1843 The Quorum of the Twelve assembled at the house of Elder Brigham Young present (viz) B[righram] Young, H[eber] C. Kimball, Orson Hyde, W. Woodruff, John Taylor, Geo[rge] A. Smith [and] W. Richards, also President Joseph Smith and Hyrum Smith of the first presidency also Orson Pratt. The meeting having been called to investigate his case.--
President Joseph Smith remarked that as there was not a quorum when Orson Pratt's case came up before that he was still a member. He had not been legally cut off.
O. Pratt remarked that he had[?] rather[?] die then go to preach in any other standing than he 2 [sic] had before. Joseph— Let him have the same calling that Paul had. Let him have the keys to the Jews. First unto the Gentiles then unto the Jews.
Paul held the keys of transfer— that is when the Gentiles have heard all they will it shall be given to the Jews.
J[oseph] — Orson by transgression laid himself liable to have another ordained in his stead. — & [?] Jacob & Esau were [?] for [an?] example. Young said there was about 3 [present?] when [Amassa?] was ordained — Joseph said that was legal when no more could be had. —
Young — and all he had against Orson was when he came home he loved his wife better than Paul.
Joseph — she lied about me. — I never made the offer which she said I did.
I will not advise you to break up your family — unless it were asked of me. I would council you to get a bill from your wife and marry a virtuous woman and raise a new family but if you do not do it still never through it in your [teeth?1] [i.e., "but if you don't divorce your wife. I will not throw it back at you"]. Joseph Orson I prophesy in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ that it will not be 6 month before you learn things [which?] will make you [?] not [?] us [probably "glad you have not left us"].
Pres[iden]t Joseph said to Orson Hyde I can make a swap with Amasa Lyman and let him have the office we were going to give you.
Orson the latter part of your life shall be more joyful than the former.
3 o'clock adjourned to President Josephs. 4 o'clock Orson Pratt, Sarah Marinda Pratt & Lydia Granger were baptized in the basin by [?] Pst [?] Joseph Smith — & confirmed in the court [?] room — Orson received the priesthood & the same power & authority as in former days.
W. Richards B. Young (9)
[Quorum of the Twelve] Orson Pratt rebaptized and restored to former office in the Quorum. Amasa M. Lyman replaced. (10)
-- Jan 20, 1843. Friday.
[William Clayton Journal] President Joseph Preached in the Temple on the Prodigal Son and showed that it did not refer to any nation, but was me[re]ly an answer to the remark "he receiveth the sinners and eateth with them." The Temple was crowded with people. (11)
-- 1843 January 20
Friday, January 20th Visited President Marks. Returned at 10 o'clock and gave some instructions about [W. W.] Phelps and Richards uniting in writing the history of the church. Bro[ther] Phelps presented some po[e]try to Joseph Smith the Prophet—"Will you go with me in."
Joseph told his dream in council[:] I dreamed this morning that I was in the Lobby of the Representative House at Springfield when some of the members who did not like my being there began to mar and cut and pound my shins with pieces of Iron. I bore  it as long as I could, then Jumped over the rail into the hall, caught a rod of Iron and went at them cursing and swearing at them in the most awful manner and drove them all out of the house. I went to the door and told them to send me a clerk and I will /would/ make some laws that would do good. There was quite a collection around the /State/ house trying to raise an army to take me and there were many horses tied around the square. I thought they would not have the privilege of getting me so I took a rod of Iron and mowed my way through their way /ranks/,  looking after their best race horrse thinking they might catch me when the[y] could find me when I was awoke.
To dream of flying signifies prosperity and deliverence from Enemies. Swimming in deep water signifies success among Many people. The word will be accompanied with power. Told Elder Hyde when he spoke in the name of the Lord, it should prove true, but do not curse the people.
Prophecy in the name of the Lord God. [Joseph said,] "As soon as we get the temple built so that  we will not be obliged to exhaust our means. Thereon we will have means to gather the saints by thousands and tens of thousands."
Elder Hyde told of the excellent white wine he drank in the east [Palestine]. Joseph prophesied in the name of the Lord that he would drink wine with him in that country. Joseph [said], "From the 6th day of April next, I go in for preparing with all present for a Mission through the United States and when we arrive  at Maine we will take ship for England and so on to all countries where we are a mind for to go." P[r]e[se]nt: H[yrum] Smith, B[righam] Young, H[eber] C. Kimball, Orson Hyde, Orson Pratt, John Taylor, W[ilford] Woodruff, Geo[rge] A. Smith, [and] W[illard] Richards.
[Joseph said,] "We must write for John E. Page. We must love the whole Quorum. We must send Kings and Queens to Nauvoo and we will do it. We must all start from this place. Let the 12 [Apostles] be called in on the  6th of April and a notice be given for a special conference on the platform on [the] House of the Lord. We are sure to go as we live till spring. If I live I [will] take these b[r]ethren through these United States and through the world. I will make just as big a wake as God Almighty will let me."
/4 P.M./ Baptized Orson Pratt and wife and Lydia Granger and confirmed them. Ordained Orson to all the authority of his former office. *

[High Council Minutes]
Council met according to adjournment. Hyrum Smith William Marks & Charles C. Rich, Presidents. The Council was organized as, follows:
Samuel Bent No 1 James Allred No. 2
Lewis D. Wilson " 3 A Cutler " 4
David Fulmer " 5 G.W. Harris " 6
Thomas Grover No 7 Aaron Johnson No 8
Zebidee Coultrin " 9 W. Huntington " 10
Leonard Soby " 11 Joshua Smith pro tem 12
Prayer by President Marks.
Henry H. Wilson appeared before the Council and desired to know, whether, in his present condition, it would be wisdom, and also if it would be justifiable by the laws of God and man, for him to unite himself in matrimony, or not, as he had a living wife
It appeared from evidence adduced that his wife was a very contentious, disobedent and ungovernable woman and that she would not submit to good order, or abide his council and altogether refused to live with and that they had been apart for the last five years and many other things which was unbecoming &c.
After which it was decided by President Hyrum Smith and William Marks, that if he feels himself justified and can sustain himself against the laws of the land, that he is clear as far as they were concerned ((ie) the jurisdiction of the High Council) and was at liberty to marry again on the aforesaid conditions
The following charge was then presented.
"Nauvoo January 16th 1843.
You Enoch King and Mary your wife are hereby notified to appear before the High Council of this Stake on next Saturday, the 21st inst. at 9 o'clock in the morning, to answer to charges prefered against you, for living in adultery; and unchristian-like conduct
Done by order of William Marks, President of the High Council."
The trial of the above case was adjourned till one O'clock P.M. for the want of the proper evidence as neither party was ready for trial.
Henry G. Sherwood took his seat in Council
The following charge was then read,
"Nauvoo January 17th 1843.
You, Henry Cook, are requested to appear before the High Council of this Stake, on Saturday next, at 9 o'clock, on said day, at Hyrum Smith's office, to answer, as far as fellowship is concerned, to a charge for unchristianlike conduct, for selling your wife &c. &c.
Done by order of President Marks, President of the High Council"
Defendant said he was innocent of the charge
Two were appointed to speak on the case, Viz: Samuel Bent and James Allred. Upon examination of the case, it appeared from evidence, that Cook had lost his wife not long since and was left with three children and being in destitute circumstances, and not in a condition to keep house, thought that he had best get married again and advised with some of his friends who also thought it best if he could get a suitable companion, not long afterwards, upon a short accquaintance, and the recommendation of some of his friends he got married to Mary ******* not long after this he found that she was in the habit of traveling about at night when there was no need of it &c. and that she was would shamefully misuse his children & set bad examples before them, use very indecent language to them &c also would abuse him & insult him without a cause and entirely refuse to be subject to him or be under his controll, boasting that she would be governed by no man and threaten to use violence on
him and his children and that she would go off and say she would leave him, but come back again and many such like improprieties, and that he had use remonstrated against such proceedings with as much patience as could be expected under such circumstances and used every method to bring her to her duty that he thought would avail anything with her and afterwards that he had whiped her pretty sevearly (which was his own testimony) thinking that might bring her to her duty; that he did not sell her but something had been said about it which was understood as a joke by himself and the witnesses but the party making the offer held it as a bargain & so did she. it also appeared that he had formerly been a civil upright man who desired to live in peace and good order, all of which was abundantly proven.
President Hyrum Smith spoke at some length on the subject, and, after giving Cook a very appropriate and severe reprimand for using the rod whipping his wife, he thought Cook had acted as well as could be expected under his circumstances and decided that he should be acquited. The vote was then put to the council by Prest Mark[s] and carried unanimously
The Council adjourned a few minutes and again met, after which the charge against Enoch King and wife was adjourned till next Saturday at 9 o'clock A.M.
The following charge was then read,
"Nauvoo January 17th 1843
You John Thorp and widow, Sarah Miller, said now to be the wife of John Thorp, are each of you hereby notified to appear before the High Council of this Stake, on Saturday next at 9 o'clock in the morning at Hyrum Smith's office to answer, as far as fellowship is concerned, to a charge prefered against you for living in adultery and unchristian-like conduct.
Done by order of President Marks.
President of the High Council"
Two were appointed to speak on the case viz (3) L.D. Wilson and (4) A Cutler.
Upon examination of the case it appeared that Thorp and Sarah Miller had got married on the 6th of Dec last and that Thorp had another living wife now in this City, who was also at the trial, but he did not appear and sent word that he asked the Council no odds, another reason which he had given for not coming was that he was afraid that he would be arrested by the civil law and sent to the penetentiary for Bigamy, which was a proff of his guilt.
As for Sarah Miller, she plead ignorance saying she did not know but she had a right to marry him that Thorp used many arguments to induce her to have him and finely convinced her that it was right and also that Dr. Foster & others had used their influence to bring it about &c. &c. Much was said on the subject and the charge being sustained in the fullest sense it was decided by Prest H. Smith & Marks that they both be cut off from the church which decision was sanctioned unanimously by the Council.
Charge against John C Annis
For performing the matrimonial cerimony between John Wells Taylor and Mary Cook wife of Henry Cook, who was living.
It appeared that Mary Cook had left her husband and her and Wells got married under the plea that he had bought her of Cook for her weight in cat- fish and that Annis had married them which thing he frankly confessed, and stated that he had found out since he had no right to do it, and his reasons for it &c he manifested a spirit of deep repentance and remorse for what he had done and was willing to make any satisfaction which would be required &c which
President Hyrum Smith spoke at some length on the subject and reprimanded Annis for what he had done, without understanding his duty &c and then decided that he should be acquited which was sanctioned by the Council unanimously.
The following charge was then read.
"Nauvoo January 21st 1843.
Charge against Thomas Prouse and Charity Thorp, now the wife living with said Prouse, for the crime of adultery and other unchristian-like conduct.
Done by order of the High Council
Upon examination of the case it appeared that Prouse and Mrs Thorp was married on the 22nd day Dec. last. That she had previously to this came to his house to work for him, as he had lost his wife, and he had ascertain[ed] that she had some difficulty with her husband and that they did not live together and that he did not provide for her as he should &c and that he became more & more attached to her the more he became a[c]quainted, and also his children became acquainted attached to her and did not want her to leave their house and often solicited him to marry her which at last he did.
His reasons in justification of himself was that Thorp abused her and did not provide for her and because of the attachment of his children to her and more especially after Thorp got married to Sarah Miller &c all this was the statement of the parties and strengthened by other testimony.
President Hyrum Smith spoke at [length] upon the subject showing the iniquity of their conduct that they were living in adultery and that the only way for them to He then decided that they both be disfellowshiped, which was sanctioned by the Council unanimously
Council then adjourned till next Saturday at 9 o'clock at this place when the other buisness now before the Council would be taken up.
