M HerringBr HerringEdward Whiteseye â" Peter Cooper and Moses [Otis] to partake of a dinner prepared for us by the kindness of Capt Hunters Lady - & we had a complete jollification and then went with George Herring to see Cyrus Daniels who is still very unwell returned to the Marquee & found all well I then went still in company with G Herring to see Charles Shumway who still very unwellfrom there we went to My house stayed a short time and returned to my Marquee â" dispatched two waggons to meet Capt Egans & his Troops who were on the road from Carthage a foot â" Saw Gen Rich and gave him a full report of my proceedings through the day to which he gave his entire approbationGave orders to have 50 teams for the purpose of working the road near the Temple or as it is known the Hill Road.About 9 o clock we attended to prayers by the Clerk â" Capt Egan & troops arrived and reports the numb
er of troops now in Carthage under the command of
Gen Hardin of the Illinois Volunteers to be about 320 men who are sent by the Governor to maintain & be the efficient arms of the Law as he published in his general Orders to Hancock county â" God grant it may prove as he as published â" The weather during the day was disagreeable owing to the drizzly state of the atmosphere about time for rest a strong West wind came up & well nigh overset my marqueeI then went into the Tent of Col Harmon and retired to restit continued to rain the most of the night and when we awoke in the morning the water stood ankle deep
