[Hosea Stout Diary] Sunday Sept 21. 1845. After supper we amused ourselves in my Marquee with a pleasing varieties at 8 o clock Capt McRae started on a expedition with his company to reconnoitre the enemy line about 8 or 10 miles southabout 11 o clock he returned report favourable Capt McRae & company returned from their expedition about 2 o clock all well
4 o clock Col. Hale & Compy returned from Warsaw.5 o clock I left the Marquee & went home after a short time I returned to my Marquee and whence I went to Gen Rich and received orders for the recalling of the out post guards â€" I gave them as follows â€" one for Capt Egan stationed at Camp creek one at near Lotts â€" as also all guards now on posts â€" My Quartermaster Bates Nobles provided a most excellent Breakfast of which myself & staff partook of the same our Friend Hutchinson performed the necessary office of Trimmar he is also recognised as an aid & musician in Kay Staff â€" the order for recalling Capt Egan & Guar

Allen & guard were recalled from their station up the river & at head quarters were dismissed till further orders for day time â€" but the night watch to be continued as before.I took my wife to the meeting at the standI returned to my Marquee and attended to such duties as demanded my attention (at 3 o clock gave some general orders
for my quarter master Noble to be executed [crossed out])I again returned to the stand after meeting took my wife home I immediately returned to my Marquee by Allen Weeks.at past 4 oclock Capt McRae with 20 men left [to] reconnoitre the enemy line on the south I issued orders for the quartermaster Noble to station guard over my Marquee, also East of the parade ground one at the butchery &cabout this time Cyrus Daniels came to me & reported of a plan which he had devised to watch & regulate some matters north of Town up the river & requested me that George Langley & such others as he might select should g
o with him â€" granted.
took supper at past 6 at Br Boyce â€" whose lady had kindly volunteered her services to cook for me & staff.Maj Gen Rich gave me orders to call out the 4 & 5 Reg probably then amounting to 400 men 100 of whom was to be mounted & forthwith be marched to Carthage to protect the place and the 20 men Gen Miller had left there previously to guard and protect the place â€" this was occasioned by report that the mob were now gathering into Carthage â€" I immediately gave orders to Cols to have the same executed forthwith about 40 or 50 men mounted & equipped were dispatched under command of Col. Markhamwe continued making preparations to send out the remainder of the troops in waggons under command Col Scott â€" he presently informed me that his wife lye dangerously sick â€" Gen Rich then proposed my going â€" to which I consentedI left the Marquee to see my horses saddled â€" Maj. Gen Rich leaving with Lieu Gen Young as to the expediency of my going â€" de
clared by him not to be policy â€" just at this
moment. the Lieu Gen â€" came on the ground and said that the alarm was a false one & ordered the dismissal of the troops reserving only guards to be stationed on the river under the command of A FarnhamI believe G W. Langley returned & reported that he had went with Cyrus Daniels & others as above mentioned.(at past 4 o clock Capt McRae left in company with 20 men to reconnoitre in the South.I issued order to my Quartermaster to see a guard stationed on the Marquee ground & at the East side of the parade grounds one at the Butcherry &c.
