Joseph Smith preaches in the unfinished Nauvoo Temple, "Jesus did every thing possible to gather the people and they would not be gathered and he poured out curses upon them. Ordinances were instituted in heaven before the foundation of the world in the priesthood for the salvation of men, not [to] be altered, not to be changed." William Clayton writes: ". . . Margaret received a letter from Aaron [Farr] which made her feel bad. It also gave me unaccountable sorrow." Clayton's plural wife, Margaret Moon had been engaged to Aaron Farr, who was absent on a mission. (1)

Nauvoo, Illinois. Joseph Smith gave a discourse on the gathering of Israel and also interpreted Bible passages about postmortal life and the Godhead. (2)

[Joseph Smith] Preaches on purpose of the gathering and of the building of the temple. (3)

[Joseph Smith Diary] Sunday, June 11th 1843 10 A.M. at the Temple stand. Hymn by the Quire. Read 23 Matthew. P[arley] P. Pratt Prayed. Singing.

Matt[hew] 23:37 [This] Subject [was just] presented [to] me since I came in this house. I [am] a rough stone. The sound of the hammer and chisel was never heard on me nor never will be. I desire the learning and wisdom of heaven alone. Have not the least idea but if Christ should come and preach such rough things as he preached to the Jews, but this Generation would reject him for being so rough. I never can find much to say in expounding a text.

Never is half so much fuss to unlock a door if you have a key or [as] when you have not or have to cut it out with a jack knife.

O Jerusalem &c. Whence are [you] in the curse of Allmighty God that was to be poured out upon the heads of the Jews? That they would not be gathered because they would not let Christ gather them. It was the design in the Councils of heaven before the world was that the principle and law of that Priesthood was predic[a]ted upon the gathering of the people in every age of the world.

Jesus did every thing possible to gather the people and they would not be gathered and he poured out curses upon them. Ordinances were instituted in heaven before the foundation of the world in the priesthood for the salvation of men, not [to] be altered, not to be changed. All must be saved upon the same principle.

That is only your opinion Sir, say Sectarians, [and I say] when a man will go to hell it is more than my meat and drink to help them to do as they want to. Where there is no change of priesthood there is no change of ordinances says Jacob /Paul/. If God has not changed the ordinances and priesthood, howl ye sectarians. If he has, where has he revealed it? Have ye turned revelators? Then why deny it?

Men have thought many things insoluable in the last days, [for instance,] that he should raise the dead. Things have been hid from before the foundation of the [world] to be revealed to babes in the last days. There are a great many wise men and women to[o] in our midst. To[o] wise to be taught. They must die in their ignorance and in the resurrection they [will] find their mistake.

Many seal up the door of heaven by saying so, for God may reveal and I will believe. Heirs of God &c. upon the same laws, ordinances, &c. of Jesus Christ. He who will not love it all will come short of that glory if not of the whole.

Ordinance of the baptism. God decreed before the foundation of the world that this baptism should be performed in a house prepared for the purpose.

Spirits of prison. The Holy Ghost reveals it. Spirits in the world of Spirits which Jesus went to preach to. God ordained that he who would save his dead should do it by getting together as with the Jews. It always has been when a man was sent of God with the Priesthood and he began to preach the fulness of the gospel that [he] was thrust out by his friends. They are ready to butcher him if he teach[es] things which they had imagined to be wrong. Jesus was crucified upon this principle.

I will turn linguist. Many things in the Bible which do not, as they now stand, accord with the revelation of the Holy Ghost to me. Ponder "This day thou sha[l]t be with me in paradise." Paradise, [a] Modern word, don't answer to the original word used by Jesus. Find the origin of Paradise. Find a needle in a hay mow. Here is a chance for a battle ye learned men. Said Jesus, for there is not time to investigat[e] this matter. For this day you will be with me in the world of Spi[ri]ts. Then I will teach you all about it. Peter says he went and preached to the world of Spirits so that they would receive it [and] could have it answered by proxey by those who live on the earth &c.

"Gathered you for baptism for the dead washing, anointing, &c." said Jesus to [the] Jews. At one time God obtained a house where Peter was[hed] and ano[inte]d &c. on the day of pentecost.

Criticise a little further. Hell, [a] modern term, burning lake of fire and Brimstone. I would make you think I was climbing a ladder when I was climbing a rainbow. Who ever revealed it? God never did. Hades, I will hunt after Hades as Pat did for woodchuck. Sheol, who are you? God reveals, means a world of spirits. I don't think so says one. Go to my house I will take my lexicon &c. A world of departed spirits, [where] disembodied spirits all go, good, bad, and indiferent. Misery in a world of spirits is to know they came short of the glory others enjoy. They are their own accusers.

One universal heaven and hell. Sup[p]ose honorable and virtuous and whoremonger all hudled together. Judged according to deeds done in the body. Shame, shame. Thus we can [have] mint and annice and cummin and long prayers, but touch not the law as Peter tells us.

Paul says [he was] caught up to 3d heaven and [if there are not three heavens] what [reason does the Bible have to] tell that Lie for Paul. Sun, Moon, and Stars. Many mansions. All one say Sectarians. They build hay, wood, and stubble, build on the old revelations without the spirit of revelation or Priesthood. If I had time I would dig into Hell, Hades, Sheol, and tell what exists.

Heaven of Heavens could not contain him. He took the liberty to go into other heavens. I thought [the] Father, Son, and H[oly] Ghost [were] all stuck into one person. I pray for them, Father that we may be one. All stuffed into one God, a big God.

Peter [and] Stephen saw the Son of Man. [They] Saw the Son of Man standing on the right hand of God. 3 personages in heaven who hold the keys. One to preside over all.

If any man attempt[s] to refute what I am about to say after I have made it plain, let him be accursed. As the Father hath power in himself so hath the sun [Son] power in himself to lay down his life. The Son doeth what he hath seen the Father do &c. Take his body and stuff it into the Father.

Gods have an ascendency over the angels. Angels remain angels. Some are resurrected to become Gods by such revelations as God gives in the most holy place, in his temple. Let them who are owing tithing pay it up and bring stone. What did Judge Higby [say? . . . ] If those who are owing would bring stone we could get the walls to the roof this fall or every as to let it down.

Closed about 12 [o'clock]. Bro[ther] Cutler said they could go but little further till they had the arch stone of the windows and they wanted immediately help on almost everything. [He] spoke about 15 [minutes].

Joseph gave notice the [that] Mr. DeWolf would preach this P.M. at his /own/ request. Singing.

2 1/2 P.M. /After singing/, Joseph introduced Elder DeWolf [an] Elder of the Episcopal Church, requesting the most profound attention of the congregation. The day was pleasant and the walls of the building were nearly full. Elder DeWolf read the 6th [chapter] of Hebrews and kneeled and prayed, dressed in the black gown, the common clerical robe of the English Church. Choir sung.

[Elder DeWolf:] Heb[rews] 6:1, 2 The apostle speaks of the priesthood before the introduction of [the principles of the doctrine of Christ, saying that] their views [should] not [be] l[a]ying again the foundation of Repe[n]t[ance] &c from Dead work[s], works of Moses' law. Faith next. Next Baptism. You understand this doctrine. Plural number [the doctrine of baptisms.] Baptism of water representation of that baptism which was to come. Holy Ghost raised from graves of ignorance. Water is significant figure. Fire of God's love, laying on of hand indication, sign, mark of the reception of the Holy Ghost. I perceive the doctrine of laying on of hand is perfectly understood here. Resurrection, Judgement day, resurrection previous /to/ and consummation of the earth.

I may never meet you all again this side of the eternal world, but I will appoint a meeting i.e., when the Lord Jesus shall descend with his angels to call the dead from their graves and sit in Judgment.

Joseph gave [an] appointment for Elder Adams to lecture on the Book of Mormon at 5 1/2 P.M. (4)

[Joseph Smith Diary] Thursday, June 8th 1843 Elias Higbee born October 23rd 1795, Died June 8th 1843, aged 48 years or 47 /yr/ 7 /mo/ 17 /days/ [of] Cholera morbus, inflammation, and mortification. [He was] one of the Temple committee.

Called at office just at night. Emma sick. P.M. Rode out on horseback. Called at garden where W[illard] Richards was at work. Asked who gave him leave to occupy that lot? Ans[wer], Your honer [honor]. [Joseph said,] "You are perfectly welcome to it so far as I am concerned." (1)

[Joseph Smith Journal] He [Elias Higbee] has been sick only five days of cholera morbus and inflammation, which produced mortification, and his death was unexpected by all. His loss will be universally lamented, not only by his family, but by a large circle of brethren who have long witnessed his integrity and uprightness, as well as a life of devotedness to the cause of truth. He has endured a great share of persecution and tribulation for the cause of Christ, both during the Missouri troubles and other times. On the 6th day of October, 1840, he was appointed one of the committee to build the Temple in Nauvoo, which office he maintained during his life. In that station he has shown a disposition to do right at all times, and always manifested a great anxiety for the prosperity of the Temple as well as the work at large. He has left a large family to mourn his departure; but he is gone to his rest for a little season, even until the morning of the resurrection, when he will
again come forth and strike hands with the faithful, and share the glory of the kingdom of God for ever and ever. (2)

-- Jun 11, 1843
[Apostle Wilford Woodruff Journal] June 11th A large assembly of Saints met at the Temple & were addressed by president Joseph Smith. He took for the foundation of his discourse the words of Jesus to the Jews how oft would I have gathered you togetherd as a hen gathereth her chickens under wings But ye would not &c.

He then asked what was the object of Gathering the Jews together or the people of God in any age of the world. The main object was to build unto the Lord an house whereby he Could reveal unto his people the ordinances of his house and glories of his kingdom & teach the people the ways of salvation. For their are certain ordinances & principles that when they are taught and practized, must be done in a place or house built for that purpose. This was purposed in the mind of God before the world was & it was for this purpose that God designed to gather together the Jews oft but they would not. It is for the same purpose that God gathers together the people in the last days to build unto the Lord an house to prepare them for the ordinances & endowments washings & anointings &c.

One of the ordinances of the house of the Lord is Baptism for the dead. God decreed before the foundation of the world that that ordinance should be administered in a house prepared for that purpose. If a man gets the fulness of God he has to get [it] in the same way that Jesus Christ obtained it & that was by keeping all the ordinances of the house of the Lord.

Men will say I will never forsake you, but will stand by you at all times. But the moment you teach them some of the mysteries of God that are retained in the heavens and are to be revealed to the children of men when they are prepared, They will be the first to stone you & put you to death. It was the same principle that crusified the Lord Jesus Christ.

I will say something about the spirits in prision. Theire has been much said about the sayings of Jesus on the cross to the thief saying this day thou shalt be with me in paradise. The commentators or translators make it out to say Paradise. But what is Paradise? It is a modern word. It does not answer at all to the original that Jesus made use of. Their is nothing in the original in any language that signifies Paradise. But it was this day I will be with thee in the world of spirits & will teach thee or answer thy inquiries. The thief on the Cross was to be with Jesus Christ in the world of spirits. He did not say Paradise or heaven.

The doctrin of Baptism for the dead is clearly shown in the new testament. And if the doctrin is not good then throw away the new testament. But if it is the word of God then let the doctrin be acknowledged & it was one reason why Jesus said how oft would I have gathered you (the Jews) together that they might attend to the ordinance of the baptism for the dead as well as the other ordinances, the Priesthood Revelations &c. This was the case on the day of Pentecost. These Blessings were poured out upon the deciples on that occasion.

Their has been Also much said about the word Hell & the sectarian world have preached much about it. But what is hell? It is annother modern term. It is taken from hades the greek or shaole, the (hebrew) & the true signification is a world of spirits.

Hades shaole paradise, spirits in prision is all one. It is a world of spirits. The righteous & the wicked all go to the same world of spirits. But says one I believe in one hell & one heaven. All are equally miserable or equally happy. But St Paul informs us of three glories & three heavens. He knew a man caught up to the third heavens, & Jesus said their were many mansions in my Fathers kingdom.

Any man may believe Jesus Christ is good & be happy in it & yet not obey his commands & at last be cut down by his righteous commandments. A man of God should be endowed with all wisdom knowledge & understanding in order to teach & lead people. The blind may lead the blind & both fall into the death together.

Their is much said concerning God the Godhead &c. The scripture says their is Gods many & Lords many. The teachers of the day say that the father is God the Son is God & the Holy Ghost is God & that they are all in one body & one God. Jesus says or prays that those that the father had given him out of the world might be made one in us as we are one. But if they were to be stuffed into one person they would make a great God.

If I were to testify that the world was wrong on this point it would be true. Peter says that Jesus Christ sat on the right hand of God. Any person that has seen the heavens opened knows that their is three personages in the heavens holding the keys of power. As the father hath power in himself so the Son hath power in himself. Then the father has some day laid down his body & taken it again. /So he has a bo[d?]y of his own./ So has his Son a body of his own. So each one will be in their own body.

Many of the sects cry out O I have the testimony of Jesus. I have the spirit of God. But away with Jo Smith. He says he is a Prophet But their is to be no Prophets nor revelations in the last days; But stop sir the Revelator says that the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of Prophecy. So by your own mouth you are condemned.

But to the text. Why gather the people together in this place? For the same purpose that Jesus wanted to gather the Jews. To receive the ordinances, the blessings & the glories that God has in store for his Saints. And I would now ask this assembly and all the Saints if they will now build this house & receive the ordinances & Blessings which God has in store for you, or will you not build unto the Lord this house & let him pass by & bestow these blessings upon another? I pause for a reply.

[ ]

After Joseph closed Elder Cutler spoke concerning the Temple & also the Death of Elder Elias Higby one of the Temple Committee who Died June 8th 1843. Aged 47 years 7 months and 17 days. At the close of the meeting President J. Smith gave out an appointment for the Rev Mr DeWolff an Episcopal Minister in the afternoon.

The meeting assembled in the afternoon & the Rev Mr DeWolf deliverd a short discourse from Hebrews 6 ch. 1 & 2 verses. We herd nothing vary objectionable in his discourse. Of course he is not a mormon. (5)

Mormon History, May 1843

-- During May 1843
[Polygamy] Sarah and Marie Lawrence (Ages 17 and 19): When Joseph Smith visited Canada in August of 1837 he converted to the church, Edward and Margaret Lawrence and their daughters Sarah and Maria. The Lawrence family subsequently journeyed to Illinois, arriving in 1840. Sarah and Maria’s father, Edward, passed away soon after their arrival. In 1842, Sarah and Maria, sixteen and eighteen years-old, began living in Joseph Smith’s home, perhaps as hired help like Emily and Eliza Partridge who were also living at the Smith residence.

In the summer of 1842 rumors circulated in Nauvoo regarding Joseph Smith’s polygamy. Joseph published a statement in his own defense: “We are charged with advocating a plurality of wives...now this is as false as the many other ridiculous charges which are brought against us. No sect has a great reverence for the laws of matrimony...we practice what we preach.” Several of Joseph’s close associates also published a proclamation that Joseph “is a good, moral, virtuous...man [and bore] testimony of the iniquity of those who had [made false statements about] Pres. J Smith’s character”. One of those defending Joseph was William Law, Joseph’s counselor in the First Presidency. William had been a family friend of the Lawrence’s in Canada. He was unaware of Joseph’s polygamy, or that Joseph had just married his sixteenth wife, Sarah Ann Whitney.

In the spring of 1843, Joseph married Sarah and Maria. A friend of Maria’s in Nauvoo recalls, “...[Maria] suffered her doubts, her fears, her uncertainty as to whether she was acting right or wrong, for she had a conscience and wanted to be right”, and also remembers Maria saying: “...if there was any truth in Mormonism she would be saved for...My yoke has not been easy nor my burden light.”

By October 1843, William Law became aware that Joseph was indeed practicing polygamy. He didn’t agree with the doctrine, or its secret practice, and tried to get Joseph to abandon it. William, “with his arms around the neck of the Prophet...[and] tears streaming down his face...pleaded with him to withdraw the doctrine of plural marriage.” Joseph said he couldn’t, and released William from the First Presidency. Finally in late spring 1844, William resolved to take Joseph’s polygamy public. As polygamy was against the law, William filed a lawsuit against Joseph for living “in an open state of adultery” with Maria Lawrence. The following Sunday Joseph commented on William’s suit in his sermon, “Another indictment has been got up against me...What a thing it is for a man to be accused of committing adultery, and having seven wives, when I can only find one.” By this time, Joseph had married at least thirty-four women.

William also announced Joseph’s polygamy in the “Nauvoo Expositor”. Within days, Joseph declared the newspaper a “public nuisance” and ordered the city marshal to “destroy the printing press...and burn all the Expositors.” Joseph was subsequently arrested and jailed in nearby Carthage, where he was killed on June 27, 1844. After little more than a year of marriage, Sarah and Maria were widows. (1)

[Polygamy] Maria Lawrence age 19, (b. December 18, 1823 , Pickering Township, Ontario - d.? Nauvoo, Illinois) Sister of Sarah. After Smith's death, Lawrence married Brigham Young, becoming his sixteenth plural wife. They divorced in 1845 , but remarried the following year. wiki(1)

[Polygamy] Father Heber C. Kimball officiating Marriage - Helen Mar Kimball, age 14 ,. PLACE: Smith's Store, Nauvoo, IL SOURCE: FamilySearch.com record for Joseph Smith Jr. (6)

[Polygamy] Helen Mar Kimball (Age 14): In 1843 Apostle Heber C. Kimball had an important talk with his only daughter, fourteen-year-old Helen Mar. She wrote: Without any preliminaries [my Father] asked me if I would believe him if he told me that it was right for married men to take other wives...The first impulse was anger...my sensibilities were painfully touched. I felt such a sense of personal injury and displeasure; for to mention such a thing to me I thought altogether unworthy of my father, and as quick as he spoke, I replied to him, short and emphatically, No I wouldnt!...This was the first time that I ever openly manifested anger towards him...Then he commenced talking seriously and reasoned and explained the principle, and why it was again to be established upon the earth. [This] had a similar effect to a sudden shock of a small earthquake.

Then father asked me if I would be sealed to Joseph...[and] left me to reflect upon it for the next twenty-four hours...I was sceptical-one minute believed, then doubted. I thought of the love and tenderness that he felt for his only daughter, and I knew that he would not cast her off, and this was the only convincing proof that I had of its being right. I knew that he loved me too well to teach me anything that was not strictly pure, virtuous and exalting in its tendencies; and no one else could have influenced me at that time or brought me to accept of a doctrine so utterly repugnant and so contrary to all of our former ideas and traditions. Unknown to Helen Mar, Heber and Joseph had already discussed the prospect of Helen Mar becoming one of Josephs wives. Heber now sought her agreement. Helen recalls, Having a great desire to be connected with the Prophet Joseph, he offered me to him; this I afterwards learned from the Prophets own mouth. My father had but one Ewe Lam
b,

but willingly laid her upon the alter

The next morning Joseph visited the Kimball home. "[He explained] the principle of Celestial marrage...After which he said to me, If you will take this step, it will ensure your eternal salvation & exaltation and that of your fathers household & all of your kindred.[] This promise was so great that I willingly gave myself to purchase so glorious a reward. None but God & his angels could see my mothers bleeding heart-when Joseph asked her if she was willing...She had witnessed the sufferings of others, who were older & who better understood the step they were taking, & to see her child, who had scarcely seen her fifteenth summer, following in the same thorny path, in her mind she saw the misery which was as sure to come...; but it was all hidden from me. Helens mother reluctantly agreed and in May of 1843, Helen married Joseph Smith.

During the winter of 1843-44, there were weekly parties at Joseph Smiths Mansion House. Many of Helens friends attended, as well as her sixteen-year-old brother William. Disappointed, Helen wrote, my father had been warned by the Prophet to keep his daughter away...I felt quite sore over it, and thought it a very unkind act in father to allow [William] to go and enjoy the dance unrestrained with others of my companions, and fettered me down, for no girl loved dancing better than I did...and like a wild bird I longed for the freedom that was denied me; and thought myself an abused child, and that it was pardonable if I did murmur.

In June 1844, Heber was away from home on a mission and wrote to Helen: MY DEAR DAUGHTER-...be obedient to the counsel you have given to you...If you should be tempted, or having feelings in your heart, tell them to no one but your father and mother; if you do, you will be betrayed and exposed...You are blessed, but you know it not. You have done that which will be for your everlasting good for this world and that which is to come. I will admit there is not much pleasure in this world...Be true to the covenants that you have made...Be a good girl;...your affectionate father. A few weeks later Joseph Smith was killed in Carthage. After one year of marriage, Helen was a widow.

Helens father would eventually marry thirty-nine wives. She wrote, I had, in hours of temptation when seeing the trials of my mother, felt to rebel. I hated polygamy in my heart. Helen later fell victim to a prolonged illness: For three months I lay a portion of the time like one dead...I tasted of the punishment which is prepared for those who reject any of the principles of this Gospel. Eventually she was converted to polygamy and recovered from her illness, I fasted for one week, and every day I gained until I had won the victory...I learned that plural marriage is a celestial principle, and saw... the necessity of obedience to those who hold the priesthood, and the danger of rebelling against or speaking lightly of the Lords annointed. Helen later summarized her experience with plural marriage in a poem:

I thought through this life my time will be my own

The step I now am takings for eternity alone,

No one need be the wiser, through time I shall be free,

And as the past hath been the future still will be.

To my guileless heart all free from worldly care

And full of blissful hopes and youthful visions rare

The world seamed bright the thretning clouds were kept

From sight and all looked fair...

...but pitying angels wept.

They saw my youthful friends grow shy and cold.

And poisonous darts from slandrous tongues were hurled,

Untutord heart in thy genrous sacrafise,

Thou didst not weigh the cost nor know the bitter price;

Thy happy dreams all oer thoust doomd also to be

Bard out from social scenes by this thy destiny,

And oer thy sadnd memries of sweet departed joys

Thy sickend heart will brood and imagine future woes,

And like a fetterd bird with wild and longing heart,

Thoult dayly pine for freedom and murmor at thy lot;

But couldst thou see the future & view that glorious crown,

Awaiting you in Heaven you would not weep nor mourn.

Pure and exalted was thy fathers aim, he saw

A glory in obeying this high celestial law,

For to thousands whove died without the light

I will bring eternal joy & make thy crown more bright.

Id been taught to reveire the Prophet of God

And receive every word as the word of the Lord,

But had this not come through my dear fathers mouth,

I should ner have received it as Gods sacred truth.

[Joseph Smith Diary] Saturday, May 27th 1843 2 P.M. the Twelve [Apostles] were in Council on B[enjamin] Winchester [case]. [Present:] Joseph, Hyrum, Judge Adams, Bishop Whitney, Sister Emma, Adams, and Jarman and G[eorge] J. Adams and others. Winchester was silenced. See minutes of the Twelve [Apostles]. /Adjourned to Monday 6 P.M.
/A tremendous rain storm all day commencing with thunder in the morning. Joseph instructed the Twelve [Apostles] to call up[on] the whole Philadelphia Church while in the council. (1)

[Quorum of Twelve] Saturday May 27th 1843. The Twelve assembled in council ... also President Joseph Smith, Patriarchs, Hiryam [sic] Smith and James Adams, Bishop Whitney and others — Prayer by Elder Kimball after singing.
President Young stated the object of the meeting was to investigate a letter from Sybbella Armstrong of Philadelphia concerning Benjamin Winchester — and other business. The letter was then read ... stating that B. Winchester had been slandered by her character.
[Then discussed stories of her drunkenness and possessing large amounts, on occasion, of money and having debt — Winchester defended himself as only repeating well known stories.] Hyrum Smith when he was in Philadelphia ... when I preached adultery she left the house. [after more discussion]
Pres[iden]t J. Smith said that it [sic] was a bag of nonsense to sit here without witnesses & hear one slang another. Pres[iden]t J. Smith, it has been the character of B. Winchester form the beginning to contradict every body every thing. and I have been under the ire of his tongue [?] ... I disagreed him before the conference & to be revenged he told one of the most damnable lies about me. Visited Sister Smith, Sister Dibble — small hat shop. — told her to come to Nauvoo [?] with me. & I would protect him [?] & B. Winchester set up a howl that I was guilty of improper conduct.
If Isabella Armstrong, is every so bad so much the worse [?] The patriarchal office is the highest office in the church ... and father Smith conferred this office, on Hyrum Smith, on his death bed. Pres[iden]t Joseph said to the Twelve that Elder Adams has come to me and make acknowledgment, perfect satisfaction — his [license ?] as Elder will be taken form him and he will act as priest. — and Bro[ther] Adams will has now started anew, — and let all present hold their tongues and only say that Elder Adams has started anew. -- (2)

[Anointed Quorum] "I met with brothers Joseph, Hyrum, Heber, Willard, Bishop Whitney and Judge Adams when we administered to brother Joseph the same ordinances of Endowment, and of the holy priesthood which he administered unto us." Thus, this repeated the pattern established in May 1842 of endowing Smith the second day (MHBY, which again omitted Law's participation). (4)

Sunday prayer circle "in the upper room" of Smith's old home. Joseph and Hyrum Smith, Brigham Young, Heber C. Kimball, Willard Richards, Newel K. Whitney, and James Adams were present (HC), and the participants "attended to ordinances" (MAQ). Because of his recent conversion to polygamy, Hyrum Smith may have been the one who performed the sealing of Emma Hale Smith to Joseph Smith for time and eternity on this date. James Adams was also sealed to his first wife Harriet Denton Adams (JS-F, MAQ, EHAT-61). Because William Law attended the previous meeting of the Anointed Quorum, he probably also attended this one (DMQ). (4)

[Emma Smith] Emma sealed to Joseph for eternity. (6)

[Joseph Smith] Nauvoo, Illinois. Joseph and Emma Smith were sealed as husband and wife for time and eternity. (7)

[Joseph Smith] Joseph meets with six associates "to attend to ordinances and counseling." He prays that Orrin Porter Rockwell might be delivered from prison and James Adams might be delivered from his enemies. He says that of the original Twelve Apostles, "there have been but two but what have lifted their heel against meâ€"namely Brigham Young and Heber C. Kimball." (History of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (7 volumes) 5:412.) (8)

-- May 27, 1843
[Apostle Wilford Woodruff Journal] 27th A rainey day. I arose sick in the morning In consequence of hard labor & being heted the day before. I was confined to my bed the fore part of the day.
In the afternoon I met in council with the Twelve & first Presidency when the case of Benjamin Winchester was brought up on trial for improper conduct slandering the Saints in Philadelphia for rejecting the council of Hiram, Joseph, & the Twelve & tearing to peaces the saints instead of building up. Hyrum plead for mercy, Joseph for Justice, & the Twelve decided according to testimony, & in all we had an interesting time.
Elder Winchester was refractory & out of order. Joseph wished the Twelve or President of the quorum to call the house to order.
Several Letters were read touching the subject after which Elder Winchester made a lengthy speach trying to justify himself. Was followed by President Hyram Smith. Plead in behalf of Winchester on the side of mercy. Elder George J Adams gave his testimony against Winchester. Then Elder Winchester followed Adams & both spoke sever[al] times.
Then President Joseph Smith Arose & rebuked Elder Winchester in the sharpest manner. Said he had a lying spirit & had lied about him & told him of many of his errors.
After hearing the testimony Elder B Young President of the quorum of the Twelve Said he had made up his mind & his decision was that Elder Winchester should give up his licence & cease Preaching untill he should reform.
President H Smith said he should not like to have such a decision given without another trial & give Elder Winchester a chance to get more testimony if he could. President Young said he should then prefer to have case turned over to the High Council.
President Joseph Smith said it was not the business of the High Council. They Could not try him. It belonged to the Twelve & them alone for it was concerning matters abroad & not in Nauvoo. The high council was to trye cases that belong to the city & the Twelve to regulate the churches & Elders abroad in all the world & Elder Winchester case comes under the jurisdiction of the Twelve & them alone. President H Smith urged that the case should be put off untill tomorrow. President J. Smith said the case might be put off untill tomorrow at 10 oclok if it would do any body any good.
President B. Young arose & spoke in the majesty of his calling & among other remarks said his mind was made up & the remarks of Brother Hyrum or of Br Joseph had not altered it. As for himself he would not sit upon the case another day. He considered it an insult upon his office & calling as an apostle of Jesus Christ & he would not bear it. As for the rest of the Twelve [they] might do as they pleased. As for himself he would not do it. Benjamin Winchester has despised & rejected the council of the presidency & the Twelve had said they had no Jurisdiction over him in Philadelphia & to say whare he should go &c. But he & others will find their is power in the Twelve. We know through whom we have received our power & who are our benefactors & we are thankful for it. Benjemin Winchester has never for the first time received our council but has gone contrary to it. No one is safe in his hands. He calls Hiram an old granny & slanders evrybody. He says their is a contradiction be
tween Hiram & the Twelve. Their is no contradiction between us & Hiram is there Br Hiram? (Hiram answers no.)
After B Young closed President J. Smith Said he would give us a little Council if we saw fit to except it. He thought it proper for us to Silence elder Winchester take his lisence & have him come to Nauvoo & if he would not do that let him go out of the Church. It was then Mooved & seconded that Elder Winchester be silenced & give up his lisence & come with his family to Nauvoo which was carried unanimously.
Br Joseph then addressed the Twelve & said that in all our councils esspecially while on trial of any one we should see & observe all things apper-taining to the subject & disern the spirit by which either party was governed. We should be in a situation to understand evry spirit & Judge wrighteous judgment & not be asleep. We should keep order & not let the Council be imposed upon by unruly Conduct. The Saints need not think because I am familiar with them & am playful & Cheerful that I am ignorant of what is going on. Inipuity cannot be retained in the Church of any kind & it will not fare well whare I am for I am determined while I do lead the Church to lead them right.
Br Joseph further remarked as concerning Elder Adams that he had given satisfactions to him concerning the things whareof he was accused. He had confesced all wharein he had done wrong & had asked for mercy & he had taken the right course to save himself that he would now begin new in the Church. After much instruction was given from Joseph the Council adjourned. + (2)

President said such covetous minded men would be damned. President stated to me that he had had a little trouble with Sister E[mma]. He was asking E[liza] Partridge concerning [Joseph] Jackson['s] conduct during Presidents absence and E[mma] came upstairs. He shut to the door not knowing who it was and held it. She came to the door and called Eliza 4 times and tried to force open the door. President opened it and told her the cause &c. She seemed much irritated. He says Jackson is rotten hearted.

[Anointed Quorum] "Met with the Prophet Joseph, the Patriarch Hyrum, brothers Kimball and Richards, Judge James Adams, and Bishop N. K. Whitney, receiving our endowments and instructions in the Priesthood. The Prophet Joseph administered to us our first ordinances of endowment, and gave us instructions on the Priesthood and the new and everlasting covenant." Thus, Joseph Smith re-performed the endowment ceremony he had originally given these same men a year ago (MHBY, which inaccurately omitted William Law). Smith reconferred the endowment for two reasons. First, to prepare for the next day's sealing of marriages for time and eternity, which he explained to the men in attendance. Second, because the Presiding Patriarch had stopped his opposition to polygamous marriages (DMQ). (9)

-- May 22, 1843
[Apostle Wilford Woodruff Journal] 22 May I have had for several days past some conversation with a number of the brethren Concerning Building a house for myself & family. As I had spent most of my time in the vineyard for the last ten years & would probably spend much of my time to come in the same way I desired to have a house for my family to abide in & be comfortable in my absence. Several of the Brethren prof[fered?] to assist me to Brick & other materials & help me put it into a house. Br John Fidoe would superintend the building.
So on this 22d of May we went on to the ground & staked out the ground for my house the dimentions of which are as follows laid out in Lot No 1 in Block 106 in the city of Nauvoo fronting Durfee street on the east. It is to be 32 By 20 in the clear. Two stories high built of Brick.
I Cleared away my ground & Commenced digging my suller for my house. (1)

Mormon History, May 21, 1843

-- May 21, 1843
[Joseph Smith Diary] Sunday, May 21st 1843 10 1/2 [A.M.] Joseph arrived and after pressing his way through the crowd and getting on the stand said there were some people who thought it a terrible thing that any body should exercise a little power. [He] said he thought it a pity that any body should give occasion to have power exercised.
[Joseph] requested the people to get out of their alleys and if they did not keep them clear he might some time run up and down and might hit some of them and called on Bro[ther] Morey to constable to keep the alleys clear. After singing Joseph read 1st chap[ter] 2d Epistle of Peter. W[illia]m Law prayed. Singing again.
When I shall have the opportunity of speaking in a house I know not. I find my lungs failing. It has always been my fortune almost to speak in the open air to large assemblies.
I have not an idea there has been a great many very good men since Adam. There was one good man, Jesus. /Many think a prophet must be a great deal better than any body else/ Suppose I would condescend. Yes, I will /call it/ condescend to be a great deal better than any of you, I would be raised up to the highest heaven, and who should I have to accompany me. I love that man better who swears a stream as long as my arm and [is attentive to] administering to the poor and dividing his substance, than the long smoothed faced hypocrites.
I don't want you to think I am very righteous, for I am not very righteous. God judgeth men according to the light he gives them. We have a more sure word of prophecy, where unto you [would] do well to take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place.
We were eyewitnesses of his majesty and heard the voice of his excellent glory, and what could be more sure? Transfigured on the mount &c. and what could be more sure? Divines have been quarreling for ages about the meaning of this.
[I am like a] Rough stone rol[l]ing down [a] hill. [several lines left blank]
Three grand secrets lying in this chapter [2 Peter 1] which no man can dig out which unlocks the whole chapter. What is written are only hints of things which existed in the prophet's mind which are not written concerning eternal glory.
I am going to take up this subject by virtue of the knowledge of God in me which I have received from heaven.
The opinions of men, so far as I am concerned, are to me as the crackling of the thorns under the pot, or the whistling of the wind.
Columbus and the eggs. Ladder and rainbow. Like precious faith with us. Add to your faith, virtue, &c. Another point after having all these qualifications he lays this inju[nc]tion, but rather make your calling and election sure. After adding all this virtue, knowledge, and make your calling sure. What is the secret? The starting point? According as his divine power which [he] hath given unto all things that pertain to life and Godliness.
How did he obtain all things? Through the knowledge of him who hath called him. There could not any[thing] be given pertaining to life and Godliness without knowledge.
Wo, wo, wo to Christendom, the divine spirits, &c. If this be true, Salvation is for a man to be saved from all his enemies. Until a man can triumph over death he is not saved. Knowledge will do this.
Organization of spirits in the Eternal World. Spirits in the Eternal world are like spirits in this world. When those spirits have come into this [world] risin and received glorified bodies, they will have an ascendency over spirits who have no bodies, or kept not their first estate like the devil. Devil's punishment, should not have a habitation like the other men. Devil's retaliation [was to] come into this world, bind up men's bodies and occupy [them] himself. Authorities come along and eject him from a stolen habitation.
Design of the Great God in sending us into this world and organizing us to prepare us for the Eternal World. I shall keep [my spirit] in my own bosom. We have no claim in our eternal comfort in relation to Eternal things unless our actions and contracts and all things tend to this end.
After all this make your calling and election sure. If this injuncti[o]n would lay largely on those to whom it was spoken. [Then] How much more there [is in this] to them of the 19th century.
1st Keyâ€"Knowledge in the power of Salvation.
2nd Keyâ€"Make his calling and Election sure.
3rd It is one thing to be on the mount and hear the excellent voice &c., &c. and another /to hear the/ voice declare to you, "You have a part and lot in the kingdom."

There are things which pertain to the Glory of God & heirship of God with Christ which are not [DEL: where :DEL] written in the Bible spirits of the eternal world are diverse from each other as here in their dispositions Aspiring Ambitious &c As man is liable to enemies there as well as here it is necessary for him to be placed beyond their power in order to be saved. This is done by our taking bodies (keeping our first estate) and having the Power of the Resurrection pass upon us whereby we are enabled to gain the ascendancy over the disembodied spirits
The mortification of satan consists in his not being permitted to take a body. He sometimes gets possession of a body but when the proven authorities turn him out of Doors he finds it was not his but a stolen one
Our covenants here are of no force one with another except made in view of eternity. (2)

Howard and Martha Coray Notebook
A Sermon by the Prophet Joseph Smith. On Election.
Every man goes to his own place 2 Peter 1. Ch---Judas by transgression fell that he might go to his own place. there is one glory of the sun another of the moon & another of the stars as one Star differetheth &c. so also is the reserection of the dead. Brethren I am not a very Pieus man. I do not wish to be a great deal better than any body else. If a Prophet was so much better that any body else was he would inherit a glory far beyond what any one else would inherit and behold he would be alone, for who would be his company in heaven. [DEL: for :DEL] If I should condesend to be so righteous as the brethren would wish me to be, lo I should be taken from your midst and be translated as was Elijah. Righteousness is not that which men esteem holiness. That which the world call righteousness I have not any regard for. To be righteous is to be just and merciful. If a man fails in kindness justice and mercy he will be damed for many will say in that day Lord, have we not prophecie
in thyname and in thy name done many wonderful works but he will say unto them ye workers of iniquity &c we were eye witnesses of his Majesty we have also a more sure word of Prophecy. Now brethren who can explain this no man be [but] he that has obtained these things in the same way that Peter did. Yet it is so plain & so simple & easy to be understood that when I have shown you the interpretation thereof you will think you have always Known it yourselves---These are but hints at those things that were revealed to Peter, and verily brethren there are things in the bosom of the Father, that have been hid from the foundation of the world, that are not Known neither can be except by direct Revelation The Apostle says, unto them who have obtained like precious faith with us the apostles through the righteousness of God & our Savior Jesus Christ, through the knowledge of him that has called us to glory & virtue add faith virtue &c. &c. to godliness brotherly kindness---Charity-
--ye shall neitherbe barren or unfruitful in the Knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. He that lacketh these things is blind ---wherefore the rather brethren after all this give diligence to make your calling & Election Sure Knowledge is necessary to life and Godliness. wo unto you priests & divines, who preach that knowledge is not necessary unto life & Salvation. Take away Apostles &c. take away knowledge and you will find yourselves worthy of the damnation of hell. Knowledge is Revelation hear all ye brethren, this grand Key; Knowledge is the power of God unto Salvation.
What is salvation. Salvation is for a man to be Saved from all his enemies even our last enemy which is death [DEL: and :DEL] for David Saith, "and the Lord Said unto my Lord 'Sit thou on my right hand until I make thine enemies thy footstool.[']"
The design of God before the foundation of the world was that we should take tabernacles that through faithfulness we should overcome & thereby obtain a resrection from the dead, in this wise obtain glory honor power and dominion for this thing is needful, inasmuch as the Spirits in the Eternal world, glory in bringing other Spirits in Subjection unto them, Striving continually for the mastery, He who rules in the heavens when he has a certain work to do calls the Spirits before him to organize them. they present themselves and offer their Services---
When Lucifer was hurled from Heaven the decree was that he Should not obtain a tabernacle not those that were with him, but go abroad upon the earth exposed to the anger of the elements naked & bare, but oftimes he lays hold upon men binds up their Spirits enters their habitations laughs at the decree of God and rejoices in that he hath a house to dwell in, by & by he is expelled by Authority and goes abroad mourning naked upon the earth like a man without a house exposed to the tempest & the storm---
There are some things in my own bosom that must remain there. If Paul could say I Knew a man who ascended to the third heaven & saw things unlawful for man to utter, I more. There are only certain things that can be done by the Spirits and that which is done by us that is not done with a view to eternity is not binding in eternity. Oh Peter if they who were of like precious faith with thee were injoined to make their Calling & Election sure, how much more all we There are two Keys, one key knowledge. the other make you Calling & election sure, for if you do these things you shall never fall for so an entrance shall be administered unto you abundently into the everlasting Kingdom of our Lord & Savior Jesus Christ. We made known unto you the power & coming of our Lord & S. J. Christ were Eye witnesses of his Majesty when he received from God the Father honor & glory when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory, this is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased.
thisvoice which came from heaven we heard when we were with him in the holy Mount. We have also a more sure word of prophecy whereunto give heed until the day Star arise in your hearts [DEL: this is :DEL] It is one thing to receive knowledge by the voice of God, (this is my beloved Son &c.) & another to Know that you yourself will be saved, to have a positive promise of your own Salvation is making your Calling and Election sure. viz the voice of Jesus saying my beloved thou shalt have eternal life. Brethren never cease strugling until you get this evidence. [DEL: & :DEL] Take heed both before and after obtaining the more sure word of Prophecy.

First Chapter second Epistle of Peter. The first four verses are the preface to the whole subject. There are three grand Keys to unlock the whole subject.
