[Joseph Smith] Joseph sees Christ, Moses, Elias, and Elijah in the Kirtland Temple. (1)

Jesus Christ appears to Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery in the Kirtland Temple and accepts the temple. Moses, Elias, and Elijah also appear and commit priesthood keys to Joseph and Oliver. (See D&C 110.)1837, June (2)

Joseph Smith, Jr. later claimed that he and Oliver Cowdery were visited by Jesus Christ in the Kirtland Temple. Smith claimed that Moses, Elias, and Elijah also appeared to them and gave the two of them the "keys" to the gathering of Israel and the dispensation of the gospel of Abraham. (4)

Future-apostle Charles C. Rich describes his endowment ceremony-experience in the Kirtland Temple: "We then continued to fast and pray until the setting of the sun when we Broke Bread and Drank wine[.] we prophesied all night pronouncing blessings and cursings until the morning light[.] there was Great manifestations of the power of God . . . and I was filled with the spirit of prophesy and I was endued with power from on high." Leman Copley calls on Joseph and "confessed that he bore a fals[e] testimony against me in a suit I brought against Doctor P. Hurlbut for threatening my life, he confessed that he bore a fals testimony against me, in that suit but verily thought at the time that he was right but on calling to mind all all the circumstances connected the with the things that transpired at the time he was convinced that he was wrong, and humbly confessed it and asked my forgivness, which was readily granted, he also wished to be received into the church again by baptism, and was received according to his desire, he gave me his confession in writing" (1)

Kirtland, Ohio. Leman Copley confessed to Joseph Smith that he had testified falsely against him in the Hurlbut case. (2)

Warren A. Cowdery begins keeping Joseph's journal--writing in third person. Joseph, Sidney, Oliver Cowdery, Frederick G. Williams, John Whitmer and W. W. Phelps (all six church presidents) confer on the redemption of Zion: The positive manner in which he [Joseph Smith] expressed himself on this, <his> favorite theme, was directly calculated to produce conviction in the minds of those who heard him, that his whole soul was engaged in it, nothwithstanding on a superficial view of the same subject they might differ from him in judgment. It was determined in council, after mature deliberation that he and O. Cowdery should act in concert in raising funds for the accomplishment of the aforesaid object. As soon as the above plan was settled, he and O. Cowdery set out together, and their success was such in one half day, as to give them pleasing anticipations, and assure them that they were doing the will of God and that his work prospered in their hands

Kirtland Council Minutes record, "The following individuals comprising the firm of F. G. Williams & Co (viz.) Joseph Smith Junr., Sidney Rigdon, Oliver Cowdery, W. W. Phelps, John Whitmer, and F. G. Williams, met in the upper room in the printing office to take into consideration the situation of the firm in a pecuniary point of view [in order] to devise ways & means to discharge the debts, to make a partial division of stock and to release form responsibility of the company Messrs. Wm. W. Phelps & John Whitmer." (3)

The Lord appears to Joseph and Oliver and accepts the House of the Lord; then Moses, Elijah, and Elias commit the keys of gathering, gospel of Abraham, turning the hearts of fathers/children.

Jesus Christ appeared to Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery in the Kirtland Temple. Moses, Elias, and Elijah appeared and conveyed priesthood keys (see D&C 110). (5)

In the House of the Lord in Kirtland, the Savior, Moses, Elias and Elijah appeared to Joseph Smith, Jun., and Oliver Cowdery. (6)

Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery see Jesus and receive priesthood keys from Moses, Elias, and Elijah in the Kirtland temple. Later that month the church's LATTER DAY SAINT MESSENGER AND ADVOCATE publishes, due to "the deep anxiety felt by our southern brethren on this subject," an editorial (apparently by Cowdery): "Must we open our houses, unfold our arms, and bid these degraded and degrading sons of Canaan, a hearty welcome and a free admittance to all we possess? . . . and low indeed must be the mind, that would consent for a moment, to see his fair daughter, his sister, or perhaps, his bosom companion in the embrace of a NEGRO!" (3)

Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery later state that, on this date, Jesus Christ appeared to them and declared the temple acceptable. Moses, Elijah, and Elias are also reported to have appeared in order to confer the keys of the priesthood upon Joseph Smith (D&C 110). (7)

Kirtland, Ohio. Jesus Christ, Moses, Elias, and Elijah appeared to Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery in the Kirtland Temple. This vision is recorded in Doctrine & Covenants 110. (2)

[Black History] Elijah Abel ordained an Elder (Eunice Kenny says by Joseph Smith Jr. in My Testimony of the Latter Day Work, ms. in LDS Church Historical Department, although she wrote this four decades after the ordination, and Abel did not cite Joseph Smith as having ordained him in his defense against the later challenge to his status). The certificate of ordination was dated 3 Mar 1836. Newell G. Bringhurst (Saints, Slaves and Blacks, p. 60) notes that certificates were sometimes delayed, so the ordination could have been sooner than this, but Abel is still listed among the recently licensed elders in Jun 1836 (Messenger & Advocate, 2:335). [Black History] In a discourse on the subjects of slavery and abolition, Smith states that the curse of Ham is "not yet taken off" from the Negroes. "After having expressed myself so freely upon this subject, I do not doubt, but those who have been forward in raising their voices against the South, will cry out against me as being uncharitable, unfeeling, unkind, and wholly unacquainted with the Gospel of Christ. It is my privilege then to name certain passages from the Bible, and examine the teachings of the ancients upon the matter as the fact is uncontrovertible that the first mention we have of slavery is found in the Holy Bible, pronounced by a man who was perfect in his generation, and walked with God. And so far from that prediction being averse to the mind of God, it remains as a lasting monument of the decree of Jehovah, to the shame and confusion of all who have cried out against the South, in consequence of their holding the sons of Ham in servitude. 'And he said,

Cursed be Canaan; a servant of servants shall he be unto his brethren.' 'Blessed be the Lord God of Shem; and Canaan shall be his servant' (Gen. 9:25, 26). Trace the history of the world from this notable event down to this day, and you will find the fulfillment of this singular prophecy. What could have been the design of the Almighty in this singular occurrence is not for me to say; but I can say, the curse is not yet taken off from the sons of Canaan, neither will be until it is affected by as great a power as caused it to come; and the people who interfere the least with the purposes of God in this matter, will come under the least condemnation before Him; and those who are determined to pursue a course, which shows an opposition, and a feverish restlessness against the decrees of the Lord, will learn, when perhaps it is too late for their own good, that God can do His own work, without the aid of those who are not dictated by His counsel." [Wight, Lyman] Participated in dedication of Kirtland Temple 27 March 1836. (1)

At 11 A.M. at the Kirtland Temple, Joseph Smith and four counselors meet in "Most Holy Place in the Lord's House and sought for a revelation from Him to teach us concerning our going to Zion. . ." After uniting in prayer three times they "call the other Presidents, the two Bishops and their councils (each to stand in his place) and fast through the day and also the night." The "word of the Lord" comes through Joseph Smith "that those who had entered the Holy Place must not leave the House untill morning, . . .we must clens[e] our feet and partake of the sacrament . . . Accordingly we proceeded and cleansed our faces and our feet, and then proceeded to wash each other's feet." Sidney Rigdon and Joseph Smith's wash each other's feet after which Rigdon washes Joseph Smith Senrio's and Hyrum Smith's feet. Joseph Smith washes Frederick G. Williams's feet and then Hyrum Smith washes David Whitmer's and Oliver Cowdery's feet. David Whitmer and William W. Phelps wash each other's fee
t. "The Bishops and their councils were then washed, after which we partook of the bread and wine." They stay in the temple all through the night. (2)

Kirtland, Ohio. Joseph Smith ministered in the Kirtland Temple overnight with the Church presidents and bishops, who washed each others feet in preparation for the Solemn Assembly. (3)

Joseph Smith washes the feet of the Quorum of Twelve, "it was expedient for us to prepare bread and wine sufficient to make our hearts glad . . . Tubs water and towels were prepared . . . and then the Twelve proceed to wash the feet of the Presidents of the several quorums. . . .The bread and wine were then brought in, and I observed that we had fasted all the day. . . The brethren continued exhorting, prophesying, and speaking in tongues until 5 o'clock in the morning. The Savior made His appearance to some, while angels ministered to others, and it was a Pentecost and an endowment indeed, long to be remembered." Joshua Seixas, Joseph Smith's Hebrew teacher signs a certificate: "Mr. Joseph Smith Junior ... has been indefatigable in acquiring the principles of the sacred language of the Old Testament Scriptures. He has so far accomplished a knowledge of it, that he is able to translate to my entire satisfaction - I take this opportunity of thanking him for his industry and hi

Kirtland, Ohio. Joseph Smith continued the meetings in the Kirtland Temple, where he and other Church leaders washed the feet of those in attendance and experienced an outpouring of spiritual gifts and revelation. (3)

Kirtland, Ohio. Joseph Smith held a second dedicatory session of the Kirtland Temple for those who were unable to attend the first session. (3)

Oliver Cowdery was called back to the editorship of the Church's Messenger & Advocate. Oliver remained the figurehead editor for about a year, but his brother Warren slowly beagn to take over many of Oliver's duities in that work. (8)

[Black History] Elijah Abel given a Patriarchal Blessing by Joseph Smith Sr. No lineage is declared, rather, Abel is proclaimed "an orphan" (this phrase may have been meant literally). Patriarchal blessing states, "Thou shalt be made equal to thy brethren, and thy soul be white in eternity and thy robes glittering." Sometime in the Kirtland era, Abel is washed and anointed in the Kirtland Temple by Zebedee Coltrin, who would much later remember having never had "such unpleasant feelings." (10)

Brother Lorenzo Snow made some remarks on the character of Jesus Christ, and asked for light. I replied:

While on a mission to England, the following came forcibly to my mind -- As God was, so are we now; as he now is, so we shall be.

Our Father was once born of parents, having a father and mother the same as we have. He is the very eternal Father, because of the creation of God. He is the Savior of the world, the root of spirit and the offspring of flesh, the Only Begotten of the Father in the flesh. The Father came down and begat him, the same as we do now, and Jesus was the only one.

Moses was as God to the children of Israel, so was Joseph to us, and no man could love God without loving Joseph. In him centered the revelations of God. The Spirit went right to him and told him.

The spiritual wife doctrine came upon me while abroad, in such a manner that I never forget. Particular things belong to one blood, but, after all, we are of one blood and one flesh, all the nations of the earth. Joseph said to me -I command you to go and get another wife. I felt as if the grave was better for me than anything, but I was filled with the Holy Ghost, so that my wife and Brother Kimballs wife would upbraid me for lightness in those days. I could jump up and hollow.

My blood was as clear as West India rum, and my flesh was clear. I said to Joseph, Suppose I should apostatize, after taking another wife, would not my family be worse off? Joseph answered -There are certain bounds set to men, and if a man is faithful and pure to these bounds, God will take him out of the world; if he sees him falter, he will take him to himself. You are past these bounds, Brigham, and you have this consolation. But I never had any fears of not being saved. Then I said to Joseph, I was ready to go ahead. He passed certain bounds before certain revelations were given.

I instructed the Twelve to bless the bishops and set them apart for their several wards, although they might have been previously ordained bishops.

As he was, so are we now. As he is now, so we shall become.

Origin of famous Mormon couplet

A recent publication provides information from Brigham Young shedding light on the origin of a foundational teaching of the LDS Church.

As man now is, God once was;
as God now is, man may become

So declared Lorenzo Snow, fifth president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Since this pronouncement on Sept. 18, 1898 the couplet has been quoted hundreds of times by LDS general authorities and instructors to summarize the Mormon concept of "eternal progression."

In 1884, Lorenzo Snow's recollection of an an 1840 experience was published:

The Spirit of the Lord rested mightily upon me the eyes of my understanding were opened, and I saw as clear as the sun at noonday, with wonder and astonishment, the pathway of God and man. I formed the following couplet which expresses the revelation, as it was shown me "As man now is, God once was:As God now is, man may be. I felt this to be a sacred communication, which I related to no one except my sister Eliza, until I reached England, when in a confidential private conversation with President Brigham Young, in Manchester, I related to him this extraordinary manifestation.

However Mormon Church President Brigham Young stated in 1849 "Lorenzo Snow put out some principles arguing that Jesus Christ is our father and not our elder brother and asked for light." Brigham Young replied to Lorenzo Snow:

While on a mission to England, the following came forcibly to my mind - As God was, so are we now; as he now is, so we shall be.

The first temple (Kirtland, Ohio) is dedicated, during which several people see visions of angels and Jesus, as well as "tongues of fire." Second Counselor Frederic G. Williams "arose and testified that while Pres[i]d[en]t [Sidney] Rigdon was making his first prayer an angel entered the window and took his [position] seated between Father Smith and himself. . . .President David Whitmer also saw angels in the House." The congregation sings William W. Phelps's "The Spirit of God Like a Fire Is Burning," the most popular Mormon hymn composed during Joseph Smith's lifetime. In the minutes of this meeting, Joseph Smith presents the Twelve as "Prophets and Seers" and the First Council of Seventy as "Apostles and special witnesses to the nations." The dedicatory prayer fills eight journal pages. $960 in donations are received from the congregation to defray the expenses of building the temple. (3)

Kirtland, Ohio. Joseph Smith prepared elders licenses to send to Medina County in order for the Saints to obtain licenses to perform marriages, since the court in Geauga County had refused permission. (1)

Patriarch Joseph Smith Sr. blesses Ethan Barrows: "[thou] shalt receive a crown of celestial glory in the kingdom of the Father and live to see the end of this generation and proclaim the gospel to the end of the wicked until the earth shall reel to and fro and stagger like a drunkard at the coming of the glorious Messiah, for thou shalt live to see him come in the clouds of heaven while thou are yet in the flesh. . . . First day of the Kirtland temple dedication. Angels are seen in the solemn assembly. After dedication of the House of the Lord in Kirtland, Lyman Wight (h) (swh) leaves for Missouri, arriving in early May. (8)

One thousand worshippers begin a week of temple dedication ceremonies in Kirtland. Witnesses report rushing winds, a pillar of fire, and the presence of angels. During the dedication, a critical visionary experience occurs in which the prophet and Oliver Cowdery, who have retired behind a veil that separates an elevated pulpit from the rest of the temple, see a personage they believe is Jesus, accepting the temple as a place where he will manifest himself to his people. In addition, they see the Old Testament prophets Moses, Elijah, and Elias, who commit into LDS hands the keys of the gathering of Israel and the new dispensation of the fullness of times. (10)

We conversed freely upon the importance of her redemption, and the necessity of her redemption, and the necessity of the Presidency removing to that place, that their influence might be more effectually used in gathering the saints to that country; and we finally came to the resolution to emigrate on or before the 15th of May next, if kind providence smiles upon us, and opens the way before us. (2)

Brigham Young writes: "I attended the solemn assembly, and with my brethren of the Twelve, received my washings and anointings, and was privileged to listen to the teachings and administrations of the Prophet of God. We also attended to the washing of feet, which ordinance was administered to me by the Prophet Joseph." (3)

Joseph Smith goes to Hebrew teacher Joshua Seixas for private instruction. The next two days the "first class" (of which Joseph is a member) translates, from the Hebrew, chapters 17 and 22 of Genesis, both of which deal with Abraham. (1)

Joseph Smith writes "Spent the day in attending to my studies, At the evening, met with my [Hebrew] class at Professor Seixas' room and translated the 17th chapter of Genesis." (1)

[Murdock, John] Returned to Kirtland 24 February 1836. (1)

Kirtland, Ohio. Joseph Smith visited and blessed Sidney Rigdons wife, Phebe, who was ill. She began to recover within the hour that the blessing was given. (2)

Oliver Cowdery's older brother Warren, along with his family, arrived in Kirtland. They relocated there from Freedom, Cattaraugus, NY. Warren may have assisted his father and step-mother, William Cowdery, Sr. and Keziah, in their move from Arcadia, Wayne, NY, sending William along ahead of his own family by several days or weeks. (3)

Oliver Cowdery's sister, Olive Cowdery Wilbur and her husband Winslow Shepherd Wilbur, were living in Kirtland by this time living. They probably accompanied Warren A. Cowdery when he moved there from Freedom, Cattaraugus, NY. They had earlier lived in Ellery, Chautauqua, NY. Winslow Wilbur (and perhaps Olive) was baptized into the LDS Church at about this time Winslow was a member of the Seventy in 1837 and he accompanied the Kirtland Camp to Missouri in 1838. (3)

[Joseph Smith Sermon] This morning two gentlemen late from Scotland called to see me, to make inquiry about the work of the Lord in these last days, they treated me withrespect, and the interview was pleasing to me, and I presume interesting to them, they attended our meeting, with me, and expressed a satisfaction inwhat they heardThey spoke of Irvin the oriental reformer and his prop[h]esies- after meeting, I returned home and spent the after part of the day and evening in reading and translating the Hebrew (4)

Two non-Mormons visit the Kirtland Temple. One refuses to remove his hat "nor bow to Jo Smith, but [said] that he had made Jo bow to him at a certain time." The temple doorkeeper, George Morey puts him out because "if a man imposed upon me he imposed upon himself [Morey]," writes Joseph Smith. (6)

[Wight, Lyman] After returning to Kirtland February 1836, left to visit mother in New York. (1)

[Black History] Elijah Abel ordained an Elder, (7)

Joseph Smith authorizes the ordination of African-American Elijah Abel to the office of elder. On Dec. 20 Abel is ordained to the office of Seventy. A skilled carpenter, Abel worked on the Salt Lake Temple but was never allowed to receive his endowments or have his family sealed together because of his race. (6)

All the presidencies of the church meet in the Kirtland Temple according to their order. (8)

Joseph Smith authorizes the ordination of African-American Elijah Abel to the office of elder. On 20 Dec. Abel would be ordained to the office of Seventy. (9)

I proposedsome resolutions and remarked to the brethren that the subject was now before them and open for discussion ... it was then proposed that I should indite resolutions which I did as follows1st- Resolved that no one be ordained to any office in the church in this stakeof Zion at Kirtland without the unanimous voice of the several bodies that constitute this quorum who are appointed to do church buisness [sic] in the nameof said churc
h- viz the presidency of the church & council [of] the 12. apostlesof the Lamb and 12 high counsellors of Kirtland the 12, high counsellors ofZion, the Bishop of Kirtland & his counsellors the Bishop of Zion and his counsellors- the 7 presidents of the Seventies; untill otherwise ordered by the said quorums.
2nd- And further resolved that no one be ordained in the branches of saidchurch abroad unless they are recommended by the voice of the respective branches of the church to which they belong to a general conference appointedby the heads of the church, and from that conference receive their ordination (1)

This afternoon the sisters met again at the chapel [Kirtland Temple]to work on the ve[i]l toward the close of the day I met with the presidency & many of the brethren in the house of the Lord- I made some remarks from the pulpit upon the rise and progress of the Church of Christ of Latter day Saintsand pronounced a blessing upon the Sisters for the liberality in giving their servises so cheerfully to make the veil for the Lord's house also upon the congregation and dismissed (1)

At the Kirtland Hebrew School, Joseph Smith writes that he "assisted in forming a class of 22 to read at 3 o'clock P.M. The other 23 read at 11 o'clock. The first class recit[e]s at a quarter before 10 A.M. & the second at a quarter before 2-P.M. . . . We have a great want of books, but are determined to do the best we can. May the Lord help us to obtain this language, that we may read the Scriptures in the language in which they were given." (3)

Joseph Smith writes in his journal: "Called the anointed together to receive the seal of all their blessings. The High Priests and Elders [met] in the council room as usual. The Seventy [met] with the Twelve in the second room and the Bishop in the 3[rd]. I laboured with each of these quorums for some time to bring [them] to the order which God had shown to me which is as follows: [The] first part to be spent in solemn prayer before God without any talking or confusion and the conclusion with a sealing prayer by Pres Sidney Rigdon when all the quorums are to shout with one accord a solemn hosannah to God and the Lamb with an Amen, Amen, and Amen. Then all take [their] seats and lift up their hearts in silent prayer to God and if any obtain a prophecy or vision to rise and speak that all may be edified and rejoice together. . . .Pres Wm Smith, one of the Twelve, saw a vision of the Twelve and Seven[ties] in council together in old England. Pres Z[ebedee] Coltrin, one of the se
ven [Presidents of the Seventy], saw a vision of the Lord's Host. Others were filled with the spirit and spoke in tongues and prophecied. This was a time of rejoicing long to be remembered! Praise the Lord." (3)

The "anointed" meet by quorum in the House of the Lord. Many visions are reported. Zebedee Coltrin sees "the Lord's host." (1)

Kirtland, Ohio. Joseph Smith labored to teach each priesthood quorum the revealed order by which they should conduct their meetings and be able to receive spiritual blessings. (2)

Joseph's journal is returned to Warren Parrish, whose health has improved. (1)

Kirtland, Ohio. Joseph Smith tended to his brother Hyrum Smith, who had wounded his arm with an axe. (2)

Oliver Cowdery's half-sister, Lucy Pearce Cowdery, was by this time living in Kirtland. She probably accompanied her father William Cowdery, Jr. when he moved there from Arcadia, Wayne, NY. (5)

Joseph receives Warren's letter that he is ill and cannot come, so he appoints Sylvester Smith acting scribe until Warren returns (February 8). (1)

Joshua Seixas, former Hebrew teacher of Lorenzo Snow, begins instructing Joseph Smith and his colleagues of the "Hebrew School" in the Kirtland Temple, to enable them to translate biblical Hebrew texts. He gives two lectures per day, from 10:00 to 11:00 AM. and from 2:00 to 3:00 PM five days per week. The class has about forty students but more are added as the class continues. By mid-February, Seixas is teaching four separate classes. Joseph Smith says, "His introduction pleased me much. I think he will be a help to the class in learning the Hebrew." (2)

Mr. Seixas arrives from Hudson to teach the Hebrew to the brethren in the House of the Lord. (1)

Kirtland, Ohio. Joshua Seixas, the new teacher Joseph Smith hired for the Hebrew school, arrived in Kirtland. (3)

Joshua Sexias begins instructing Joseph Smith and his colleagues of the "Hebrew School" in the Kirtland temple, to enable them to translate biblical Hebrew texts. (4)

As Joseph Smith is organizing the Twelve Apostles in the assembly room of the Kirtland temple "Pres[ident] Sylvester Smith saw a pillar of fire rest down and abide upon the heads of the quorem . . ." After Sidney Rigdon gives a hosanna shout "Eld[er] Roger Orton saw a mighty Angel riding upon a horse of fire with a flaming sword in his hand followed by five others encircle the house and protect the Saints . . . Pres[ident] William Smith, one of the Twelve, saw the heavens op[e]ned and the Lord's host protecting the Lord's anointed. Pres[ident] Z[ebedee] Coltrin, one of the seven [presidents of the Seventy], saw the Saviour extended before him as upon the cross and crowned with a glory upon his head above the brightness of the sun." (2)

Following the organization of the Seventy preparatory to their anointing in the House of the Lord, many spiritual manifestations are reported, including Zebedee Coltrin's vision of "the Savior extended before him, as upon the cross, and a little after, crowned with glory upon his head above the brightness of the sun." (1)

Kirtland, Ohio. Joseph Smith, his counselors, the Twelve Apostles, and the seven Presidents of the Seventy saw glorious visions in the Kirtland Temple. (3)

Joseph Smith Senior gives six patriarchal blessings. Charles H. Smith is blessed: "Thou shalt stand on earth till thy Redeamer comes." Marietta Carter is blessed: "Thou shalt see thy Redeamer come in the clouds of heaven and be caught up to meet him and be ever with him." Joanna Carter is blessed: "Thou shalt see the end of this generation. Nancy Carter is blessed: "Thou shalt live to see the winding up of this generation." (2)

Warren Parrish succeeds Orson Hyde as scribe for the First Presidency. (1)

The authorities of the Church attended to the ordinances of anointing and blessing each other in the Kirtland Temple. (2)

Joseph Smith states that he had received a vision in which he saw that salvation is possible for those who die without a knowledge of the gospel (D&C 137). (3)

Kirtland, Ohio. While in the Kirtland Temple with the First Presidency of the Church, Joseph Smith saw a vision of the celestial kingdom and the Father and the Son, which is recorded in Doctrine & Covenants 137. (4)

[Joseph Smith] Administered and received ritual washings and anointings with priesthood leaders; vision of celestial kingdom, Kirtland. (5)

[Lucy Mack Smith] Washings and anointings begin. The First Presidency anoints Joseph Sr. with oil and blesses him as patriarch; he blesses each member; Joseph Jr. reports receiving a vision of the celestial kingdom. Anointing meetings continue through 28 January. Between 21 January and 1 May 1836, Saints see heavenly beings, hear heavenly choirs, and have other spiritual manifestations. (6)

[Revelations] Kirtland, Ohio. Doctrine and Covenants 137. Vision of the Father and the Son, Adam, Abraham, Joseph's parents and his brother Alvin in the celestial kingdom. Children who die before 8 years and all others who would have received the gospel had they heard it before they died, inherit the celestial kingdom.

I then took the Seat, and father annoint my head, and Sealed upon me the blessings, of Moses, to lead Israel in the latter days, even as moses led him in days of old,-also the blessings of Abraham Isaac and Jacob. -.
MH-B, 619 inserts, " The presidency then took the seat in their turn, according to their age, beginning at the eldest, and received their anointing and blessing under the hand of father Smith: and in my turn my father anointed my head -" >.

Alvah Beman had been tempted to doubt the things which we received on saturday evening and he made an humble confession, and asked forgiveness of the school, which was joyfully given; and he said he would try to resist satan in future (1)

Joseph and his counselors anoint and bless Thomas B. Marsh to bless the Twelve. The Twelve anoint and bless the presidency of the Seventy. Sylvester Smith leaps up and exclaims, 'The horseman [horsemen] of Israel and the chariots thereof.'" After the anointings and blessings, "the gift of tongues fell upon us in mighty power. Angels mingled their voices with ours, while their presence was in our midst, and unceasing praises swelled our bosoms for the space of half an hour." (1)

Kirtland, Ohio. Visions and revelations were poured out when Joseph Smith and other brethren performed anointing ordinances for the Council of the Twelve and the Presidency of the Seventy. (4)

Kirtland, Ohio. Visions of God attended Joseph Smith from the night of the 22nd until the early morning of the 23rd. (4)

First Presidency organizes the quorum of Seventies. Sylvester sees "a pillar of fire rest down and abide upon the heads of the quorum, as we stood in the midst of the twelve." (1)

Upon complaints by the Quorum of Twelve Apostles, the First Presidency formally apologizes for not showing them due respect. Oliver Cowdery records in his journal: "met in the evening with bro. Joseph Smith, Jr. at his house, in company with bro. John Corrill, and after pure water was prepared, called upon the Lord and proceeded to wash each other's bodies, and bathe the same with whiskey, perfumed with cinnamon. This we did that we might be clean before the Lord for the Sabbath, confessing our sins and covenanting to be faithful to God. While performing this washing unto the Lord with solemnity, our minds were filled with many reflections upon the propriety of the same, and how the priests anciently used to wash always before ministering before the Lord. As we had nearly finished this purification, bro. Martin Harris came in and was also washed." (1)

Twelve air their grievances with the First Presidency, the presidency apologizes, covenant with each other. (2)

[Joseph Smith] Upon complaints by the Quorum of Twelve Apostles, the First Presidency formally apologizes for not showing them due respect. (3)

while the First Presidency, the Twelve, the Seventy, and the Councilors of Kirtland and Zion are gathered together in conference, "the gift of tongues came on us also, like the rushing of a mighty wind". Five days later the gift of tongues again comes to this group "in mighty power". (1)

First Presidency and Twelve confess their faults to one another, tears, gift of tongues "like the rushing of a mighty wind." (2)

Kirtland, Ohio. Joseph Smith performed three marriages to establish the Churchs right to marry by proclamation. (4)

Kirtland, Ohio. The School of the Prophets, instructed by Joseph Smith, moved into a third-floor room of the Kirtland Temple, adjoining the Hebrew school. (4)

Joseph Smith performs a wedding attended by "The Presidency and their companions in the first Seats, the Twelve Apostles in the second, the 70 in the third and the remainder of the congregation seated with their companions." After the ceremony "Eld[e]r O[rson] Hyde, Eld[e]r L[uke] Johnson, and Eld[e]r W[arren] Parrish who served on the occasion then presented the Presidency with three Servers filled with glasses of wine to bless. It fell to my [Joseph Smith's] lot to attend to this duty, which I cheerfully discharged. It was then passed round in order, then the cake in the Same order. Suffise it to say our hearts were made glad, while partaking of the bounty of the earth which was presented until we had taken our fill." (1)

Kirtland, Ohio. Joseph Smith performed the marriage of John F. Boynton and Susan Lowell. (4)

[Joseph Smith Sermon] Conversation with Kirtland visitor at Joseph Smith home on Thursday January 21, 1836.
... I went into the room where he was, and the first question he asked me,
after passing a compliment, was to know how many members we have in our
church, I replyed to him, that w hav[e] between 15 hundred and 2,000 in
this branch. -- He then asked me wherein we differ from other christian
denomination[s] I replyed that we believe the bible, and they do not.
--however he affirmed that he believed the bible, I told him then to be
baptised, --he replied that he did not realize it to be his duty -- But
when [I] laid before him the principles of the gospel, viz. faith and
repentance and baptism for the remission of sins and the laying on of
hands for the reseption of the Holy Ghost he manifested much surprise
--I then observed that the hour for school had arived, and I must attend
The man seemed astonished at our doctrine but by no means hostile (5)

After dismissing Hebrew School for the day and attending "to the ordinance of washing our bodies in pure water we also perfumed our bodies and our heads in the name of the Lord" Joseph Smith receives a revelation in which he states "I saw father Adam, and Abraham and Michael and my father and mother, my brother Alvin that has long since slept[.]" After Joseph Smith's death the words "and Michael" are removed from the revelation because they contradict the teaching that Adam and Michael are the same personage. The altered revelation becomes section 137 of the DOCTRINE & COVENANTS. In the revelation Joseph also "saw the 12 Apostles of the Lamb, who are now upon the earth, who hold the keys of this last ministry, in foreign lands, standing together in a circle, much fatigued, with their clothes tattered and feet swol[l]en, and their eyes cast downward and Jesus standing in their midst, and they did not behold him. The Savior looked upon them and wept. . . . And I finally saw the
Twelve in the celestial kingdom of God." This part of the revelation is not canonized. Many members of the Twelve Apostles at that time were later either excommunicated or apostatized. (1)

At about 3. oclock P.M I dismissed the School and the presidency; retired to the loft of the printing office, where we attended to the ordinance of washing our bodies in pure water, we also perfumed our bodies and our heads, in the name of the Lord Diary-2, 135. (2)

In the House of the Lord, Joseph has a vision of the Father and the Son, Adam, Abraham, his parents and his brother Alvin, in the celestial kingdom. Children who die before 8 years, and all others who would have received the gospel had they heard it before they died, inherit the celestial kingdom. D&C 137 (2)

Kirtland, Ohio. Joseph Smith presided over a meeting with Church leaders from Kirtland and Clay County, Missouri. The brethren sang William W. Phelpss hymn Adam-ondi-Ahman, and new members of various councils were called and ordained in preparation for the coming Solemn Assembly. (2)

[Knight, Vinson] Ordained high priest and counselor to Bishop Newel K. Whitney 13 January 1836. (3)

[Lucy Mack Smith] Jerusha, fifth child and third daughter of Hyrum and Jerusha Smith, is born. (4)

... I found a large company assembled, the house was filled to overflowing, we opened
our interview by singing and prayer suited to the occasion after which I made some
remarks in relation to the duties that are incumbent on husbands and wives, in
particular the great importance there is in cultivating the pure principles of
the institution, in all its bearings, and connexions with each other and Society in general
I then invited them to arise and join hands, and pronounced the ceremony according
to the rules and regulations of the Church of the latter day Saints
after which I pronounced such blessings upon their heads as the Lord put into
my heart the blessings of Abraham Isaac and Jacob, and dismissed by singing prayer ... (5)

Joseph Smith writes of performing a marriage ceremony after which "We then took some refreshment and our hearts were made glad with the fruit of the vine. This is according to pattern Set by our Saviour himself and we feel disposed to patronize all the institutions of heaven." (6)

Kirtland, Ohio. Joseph Smith met with a council to draft the rules and regulations for the Kirtland Temple in preparation for its completion. He then performed two marriages in the evening. (2)

... I then made some observation respecting the order of the day, and the great responsibility we are under to transact all our buisness, [sic] in righteousness before God, inasmuch as our desisions will have a bearing upon all mankind and upon all generations to come
Sung the song Adam-ondi-ahman and open by prayer ...
... The above rules hav[e] now passed through the several quorums, in their order, and passed by the unanimous vote of the whole, and are therefore received and established as a law to govern the house of the Lord in this place, --In the investigatin of this subject, I found that many who had deliberated upon this subject were darkened in their minds, which drew forth, some remarks from me, respecting the privileges of the authorities of the church, that they should,
each speak in his turn, and in his place, and in his time and season, that their may be perfect order in all things, and that every man, before he, makes an
objection to any, item, that is thrown before them for their concideration, should be sure that they can throw light upon the subject rather than spread darkness, and that his objections be founded in righteousness which may be done by applying ourselves closely to study the mind and will of the Lord, whose Spirit always makes manifest, and demonstrates to the understanding of all who are in possession, of his Spirit - ... Rules for the house of the Lord are approved by the presidency, high council of Kirtland, high council of Zion, Twelve, Bishop and counselors of Zion, Bishop and counselors of Kirtland, and Seventy. Kirtland quorum presidents. John Corrill to "take charge of the house of the Lord in Kirtland." (1)

Further organizing the priesthood, presidents of each priesthood quorum are called for the Kirtland Stake of Zion, as is a president of the Kirtland Temple, now nearing completion. (7)

Oliver Cowdery's father, William Cowdery, Jr., was chosen to preside over the Priests' Quorum in Kirtland. William was converted Mormonism and moved from Arcadia, Wayne, NY to Kirtland (probably in late 1835). His wife Keziah probably was estranged from William prior to his removal to Kirtland. She remained behind, residing in Ellery, Chautauqua Co., N.Y. until her death in 1861. The fact that William was given such a low calling in the Church (when his purported associate of previous years, Joseph Smith, Sr., was its Patriarch) perhaps indicates that he was not held in very high esteem by Joseph Smith, Jr. (8)

... I observed that we had heard them patiently and in turn
should expect to be heard patiently also; and first I remarked that it was necessary that the
12 should state
whether they were determined to persevere in the work of the Lord, whether
the presidency were able to satisfy them or not; vote called, and carried in the affirmative,
unanimously; I then said to them that I had not lost
confidence in them, and that they had no reason to suspect my confidence,
and that I would be willing to be weighed in the scale of truth today in this
matter, and risk it in the day of judgment; and as it respects the chastening
contained in the letter in question, which I acknowledge might have been
expressed in too harsh language; which was not intentional and I ask your
forgiveness, inasmuch as I have hurt your feelings; but nevertheless, the
letter that Elder Mclellin wrote back to Kirtland while the Twelve were
at the east was harsh also, and I was willing to set the one against the
other.
I next proceeded to explain the subject of the duty of the Twelve; and
their authority which is next to the present presidency, and that the
arrangement of the assembly in this place, on the 15 inst in placing
the High Councils of Kirtland next [to] the Presidency, was because the
business to be transacted, was business relating to that body in
particular which was to fill the several quorum's in Kirtland; not beca[u]se
they were first in office, and that the arrangement was the most
Judicious that could be made on the occasion also the 12, are not
subject to any other than the first presidency, viz. myself S. Rigdon,
and F G. Williams -- I also stated to
the Twelve that I do not countenanc[e] the
harsh language of President Cowdery to them, neither in myself nor any other
man, although I have sometimes spoken to harsh from the impulse of the moment,
and inasmuch as I have wounded your feelings brethren I ask your forgiveness,
for I love you and will hold you up with all my heart in all righteousness,
before the Lord, and before all men, for be assured, brethren, I am willing
to stem the torrent of all opposition, in storms in tempests in thunders and
in lightning by sea and by land in the wilderness or among fals[e]
brethren or mobs or wherever God in his providence may call us and I am
determined that neither heights nor depths principalities nor powers
things present or to come nor any other creature shall separate me
from you; and I will now covenant with you before God that I will not
listen too nor credit, any derogatory report against any of you nor condemn
you upon any testimony beneath the heavens, short of that testimony which
is infalible, untill I can see you face to face and know of a surity and
I do place unlimited confidence in your word for I believe you to be men
of truth, and I ask the same of you, when I tell you anything that you
place equal confidence in my word for I will not tell you I know anything
that I do not know - but I have already consumed more time than I intended
when I commenced and I will now give way to my colleagues (5)
