[Oliver] pretends to have a divine mission and to have seen and conversed with Angels, and assisted in translating the plates. He proclaims destruction upon world within a few years,-holds forth that the ordinances of the gospel, have not been regularly administered since the days of the Apostliles, till the said Smith and himself commenced the work- In the neighboring township of Kirtland, we understand that twenty or thirty have been immersed into the new order of things; We understand that he [Oliver Cowdery] is bound for the regions beyond the Mississippi, where he contemplates founding a "City of Refuge" for his followers, and converting the Indians, under his prophetic authority. Mr. Oliver Cowdery has his commission directly from the God of heaven, and that he has his credentials, written and signed by the hand of Jesus Christ, with whom he has personally conversed, and as such, said Cowdry claims that he and his associates are the only persons on earth who are qualified to administer in his name. By this authority, they proclaim to the world, that all who do not believe their testimony, and be baptized by them must be forever miserable. "The Book of Mormon," PT, Dec. 7, 1830. (1)

-- Sep 3, 1830
[Marsh, Thomas Baldwin] Baptized by David Whitmer 3 September 1830 in New York. (2)

Newel and Sally Knight visit Joseph and Emma and John Whitmer in Harmony. D&C 27 (don't buy wine or strong drink from enemies). (3)

[Joseph Smith] A revelation is recorded concerning sacrament (BC 28; LDS D&C 27; RLDS D&C 26). [HARMONY,] (4)

[Revelations] and 1833-1835, Harmony, Pennsylvania. Doctrine and Covenants 27. Use whatever you want for the sacrament. What matters is that you remember my sacrifice for your sins. Do not purchase alcohol from enemies -drink only what you produce yourselves. Soon I will drink with you and Moroni , other prophets and patriarchs who hold keys of restoration, turning hearts of fathers to children and vice versa, and others. John the Baptist, in the spirit of Elias, ordained Joseph and Oliver to the first priesthood ; Elijah committed the keys of the turning of hearts. Promises remain by virtue of the patriarchs. Peter, James, and John ordained you apostles. I have given you keys of the last dispensation. Put on the armor of God.
When Newel and Sally Knight visit Joseph and Emma Smith and John Whitmer in Harmony, Joseph goes out to buy wine for the sacrament and receives this revelation not to purchase it from enemies.
D&C 27 is a combination of two revelations. The first (vss. 1-5, 14-15 of the current version) discusses the elements to be used in the sacrament. It was first published after the Articles and Covenants in "Mormon Creed," PT, April 19, 1831. No date is provided for the revelation.
The second and third published versions of the first revelation ("Revelations. / A Commandment Given, September 4, 1830," EMS 1, no. 10 (Mar. 1833): {6}; and BC 28-date the revelation September 4, 1830. The date given in the 1834-1836 History, 51, is August 1830.
The second revelation (date unknown), dealing with the keys of the priesthood, was not published until the 1851 Pearl of Great Price (Robert J. Woodford, "Historical Development of the Doctrine and Covenants," Dissertation. BYU, 1974, 398). Later it was combined with the first revelation.
Book of Commandments 28 heading: A Commandment to the church of Christ, given in Harmony, Pennsylvania, September 4, 1830,
1835 Doctrine and Covenants 50, which combines the two revelations for the first time, gives a date of September 1830. (5)

-- 1830 mid-Sep.
[Oliver Cowdery] Joseph Smith, Jr. (at Fayette, Seneca, NY) claimed to receive a message from God directed to Oliver Cowdery (LDS D&C Sec. 28). Cowdery was told that "no one shall be appointed to receive commandments and revelations in this church, excepting my servant Joseph..." and that he was to "go unto the Lamanites and preach my gospel unto them." Finally, Oliver was told to suppress the activities of would-be seer Hiram Page. (6)

-- Sep 19, 1830
Parley P. Pratt baptizes his brother Orson Pratt . (3)

Orson Pratt baptized. (7)

[Lucy Mack Smith] Parley P. Pratt baptizes his brother Orson at Canaan, New York; it is Orson's nineteenth birthday. (1)

[Pratt, Orson] Baptized 19 September 1830 by Parley P. Pratt in Canaan, Columbia County, New York. (2)

-- Sep 20, 1830
D&C 29: Sins forgiven, gather; resurrection, end of the world, everlasting fire. All spiritual. The devil and a third of heavenly host to hell before Adam was created. Devil necessary to tempt men. Adam yielded, cast out, spiritually dead, until angels declared repentance and redemption through the Son. Little children cannot sin, redeemed through the Only Begotten. (3)

D&C 30: David Whitmer has not been diligent. Peter Whitmer Jr. to accompany Oliver on mission. Oliver is to build up the church among the Lamanites and only Joseph is above him in the church. (3)

D&C 31: Thomas B. Marsh called on a mission, sins forgiven, physician to the church. Zion-the New Jerusalem (3)

-- Sep 20, 1830-26
D&C 28 (Fayette): Oliver to be Joseph's Aaron, preach to the Lamanites, New Jerusalem to be revealed, correct Hiram Page. All by common consent. (3)

Mormon History, about Aug 5, 1830

/Mormon History Chronology/
-- about Aug 5, 1830
[Joseph Smith] Harmony, Pennsylvania. Joseph Smith received Doctrine & Covenants 27, a revelation concerning the sacrament: It mattereth not what ye shall eat or what ye shall drink when ye partake of the sacrament, if it so be that ye do it with an eye single to my glory." (1)

-- 1830 mid-Aug.
[Oliver Cowdery] Parley P. Pratt, a disciple of Sidney Rigdon, left the Western Reserve of OH on a "mission" conducted "for his denomination" which took him to Fayette, Seneca, NY. There he was baptized a Mormon Sep. 1, 1820. Presumably Rigdon was with Pratt in OH at the time of his departure. (2)

-- Aug 16, 1830
[Lucy Mack Smith] Joseph Sr. appears before Justice Nathan Pierce representing Hyrum, who is charged with an outstanding debt by Levi Daggett. (3)

-- Aug 26, 1830
[Joseph Smith] Harmony, Pennsylvania. Joseph Smith obtained the title of ownership to property in Harmony from his father-in-law, Isaac Hale. (1)

-- 1830 August (late)
Newel Knight moves Joseph and Emma from Harmony to Fayette (David Whitmer home). (4)

-- 1830 late Aug.
[Oliver Cowdery] Joseph Smith, Jr. and Emma move from Harmony to Fayette. There Joseph finds the Fayette branch of the Church in near rebellion against him. Among other problems, Hiram Page (brother-in-law of David Whitmer) was claiming to receive "revelations" with his seer stone. (2)

[Oliver Cowdery] Oliver wrote from Fayette to Joseph Smith, Jr. in Harmony and told Joseph that he must recant a portion of a "revelation." Apparently Oliver felt that Joseph was inserting his own words into divine communications and thus creating "priestcraft" within the Church of Christ. (2)

-- Aug 28, 1830
By letter, Oliver objects to text in D&C 20:37. (4)

Joseph and Hyrum Smith and John and David Whitmer arrive in Colesville "to confirm those who had been baptized in June previous." (4)

[September 1] "Apostle" Oliver Cowdery baptizes Parley P. Pratt in Seneca Lake. Parley is confirmed and ordained an elder the same day. (4)

-- late Aug. 1830
[Lucy Mack Smith] Joseph Sr. and Don Carlos visit Joseph Sr.'s relatives in Potsdam and Stockholm, New York, for a week, taking Joseph's father Asael Sr. a copy of the Book of Mormon. (3)

-- Aug 31, 1830
[Lucy Mack Smith] Hyrum arrives in Fayette, bringing with him Parley P. Pratt, who has been converted by a borrowed Book of Mormon. (3)

-- 1830 Sept.
[Joseph Smith] God tells Joseph Smith that only he can receive revelations and commandments for the church; another revelation makes secular issues the domain of the church: "Wherefore, verily I say unto you that all things unto me are spiritual." (5)

-- 1830 September
Immediately following the conference, Thomas B. Marsh is called to preach (D&C 31). (6)

Mormon History, Jun 1, 1830

/Mormon History Chronology/
-- Jun 1, 1830
The apostle to the NEPHITES (Cowdery) has started for the EAST, on board a boat with a load of "GOLD bibles," under a command, (as he says) to declare the truth (according to JO SMITH,) "in all the principal cities in the Union." We must, however, caution this second Mohomet, (Jemima Wilkinson,) to be careful how he treds upon the old Saybrook Platform. Oliver (he left out two middle names in the "Book of Mormon") may find his way to the Simsbury mines. The Reflector (Palmyra), June 1, 1830. (1)

[Joseph Smith] The first proselytizing mission is conceived and is to be directed toward native Americans. The Palmyra Reflector calls Cowdery "the apostle to the NEPHITES." Cowdery and others of the "Lamanite mission" leave New York Oct. 1830 and preach to the Catteragus tribe in New York, the Wyandot tribe in Ohio, the Shawnee tribe in Missouri, and the Delaware tribe in what is now Kansas. Instead of native Americans, the most prominent converts of this 1830-31 mission are Sidney Rigdon (hereafter Rigdon), Frederick G. Williams, and Newel K. Whitney. (2)

-- Jun 1, 1830-9
D&C 20: Joseph is the seer called of God and ordained an apostle, an elder of the church; and Oliver, is an apostle, an elder of the church. Joseph's sins were forgiven but he became "entangled again in the vanities of the world." When he repented an angel gave him commandments and power to translate the Book of Mormon. All must repent and believe on the name of Jesus Christ. Duties of the elders, priests, teachers, deacons, and members. Bless children, baptize at age of accountability. Baptismal prayer, procedure. Church to meet to partake of bread and wine in remembrance of Jesus Christ. (1)

-- Jun 2, 1830
New Bible-A fellow by the name of Joseph Smith, who resides in the upper part of Susquehanna county, has been, for the last two years we are told, employed in dictating, as he says, by inspiration, a new Bible. He pretended that he had been entrusted by God with a golden bible which had been always hidden from the world. Smith would put his face into a hat in which he had a white stone, and pretend to read from it, while his coadjutor transcribed. The book purports to give an account of the "ten tribes" and strange as it may seem, there are some who have full faith in his divine commission. The book, it seems is now published. Fredonia Censor. (1)

-- Jun 9, 1830
First conference of the church, Fayette, New York. Articles and Covenants ratified. David Whitmer, John Whitmer, Peter Whitmer, Ziba Peterson, Samuel H. Smith are ordained elders. Joseph Sr., Martin Harris, and Hyrum Smith are ordained priests. (1)

A church conference is held. ^[1] Membership is 27. The current church elders are Joseph Smith, Jr., Oliver Cowdery, Peter Whitmer, David Whitmer, John Whitmer and Ziba Peterson. Joseph Smith, Sr., Hyrum Smith, and Martin Harris are ordained priests, and Hiram Page and Christian Whitmer are ordained teachers. (3)

[Joseph Smith] The first church conference is held with twelve officers called "apostles" by common appellation in their elder's certificates and elsewhere. Eleven are among the special witnesses to the Book of Mormon in 1829. At the conference Joseph Smith performs the church's first miracle by casting the devil out of Newel Knight who afterward sees a vision of the Father and Son. This month Satan also appears to Smith as "an angel of light" and is exposed by the Archangel Michael, and Smith dictates a revelation on the "vision of Moses" which describes a visionary deception by Satan anciently. (2)

[Revelations] (Date: various.) Doctrine and Covenants 20. [Location: New York and Kirtland, Ohio. ].
Church organized April 6, 1830 by God's command. Joseph and Oliver called of God, ordained apostles and first and second elders of the church. Joseph became entangled in sin, repented and was visited by angel who gave him power to translate Book of Mormon. We, the elders, heard and bear witness to the words of the Lord. God is all power, understanding, through transgression man becomes devilish. The Only Begotten. Father, Son, and Holy Ghost are one. Justification and sanctification. Qualifications for baptism. Duties of apostle/elder , priest , teacher. Ordination according to gifts of candidate , licenses. Years of accountability. Procedures and prayers for baptism and sacrament. Conferences, membership rolls.
This section has the most complicated history of all sections in the Doctrine and Covenants. In the second half of 1829, Oliver Cowdery writes out a revelation, known as "the articles of the Church of Christ," which provides directions for running the church. It draws on wording from D&C 17, June 14-30, and D&C 18, June 1-14, 1830. The first conference of the church, on June 9, 1830, ratifies the Articles and Covenants of the Church of Christ, presumably prepared by Joseph Smith. In the spring of 1831, Martin Harris sends a copy of this document to Painesville Telegraph editor and publisher, E. B. Howe, who publishes it under the headline, "The Mormon Creed. " The church publishes it in the Evening and Morning Star in 1832 and then again in 1834 due to certain "errors" in the previous release. It is published as Book of Commandments 24. Most changes were made for the 1835 Doctrine and Covenants. Robert J. Woodford's dissertation, "The Historical Development of the Doctrine a
nd.
Covenants" (BYU, 1974), meticulously documents all variants in the many manuscript and print versions.
Painesville Telegraph headline: The Mormon Creed.
Painesville Telegraph introduction: (The following document was obtained from the hand of Martin Harris, one of the original proprietors of the "Gold Bible" speculation. We publish it as a one of the curiosities of the day. What use, or whether any, is made of it in this vicinity, we know not. It was probably prepared for the latitude of New York, where creeds & con[fessionals] were not quite so unpopular as in Ohio. We believe, therefore, it has been cautiously kept from the eyes of most of the followers of St. Jo. in this vicinity. In this business the commandments and revelations of Heaven, are very easily made to yield to circumstances -Ed. Tel. ). (4)

The "Book of Mormon" has been placed in our hands. A viler imposition was never practised. It is an evidence of fraud, blasphemy and credulity, shocking to the Christian and moralist. The "author and proprietor" is one "Joseph Smith, jr."-a fellow who, by some hocus pocus, acquired such an influence over a farmer of Wayne county, that the latter mortgaged his farm for $3,000, which he paid for printing and binding 5000 copies of this blasphemous work. [Black History] The Book of Mormon is published,
The dark skin is equated with a curse which was a result of rebellion, "And he had caused the cursing to come upon them, yea, even a sore cursing, because of their iniquity. For behold, they had hardened their hearts against him, that they had become like unto a flint; wherefore, as they were white, and exceedingly fair and delightsome, that they might not be enticing unto my people the Lord God did cause a skin of blackness to come upon them", cf. 2 Ne. 5:21.
The dark skin is explicitly presented as a "mark", a "curse... because of...transgression" and as a means of separating different cultures, "And the skins of the Lamanites were dark, according to the mark which was set upon their fathers, which was a curse upon them because of their transgression and their rebellion against their brethren, who consisted of Nephi, Jacob, and Joseph, and Sam, who were just and holy men. And their brethren
sought to destroy them, therefore they were cursed; and the Lord God set a mark upon them, yea, upon Laman and Lemuel, and also the sons of Ishmael, and Ishmaelitish women. And this was done that their seed might be distinguished from the seed of their brethren, that thereby the Lord God might preserve his people, that they might not mix and believe in incorrect traditions which would prove their destruction", cf. Alma 3:6-8.
It also states that it was "against [Nephite civil] law" to hold slaves, cf. Alma 27:9 and Mosiah 2:13. (4)

[Financial] Just days prior to the meeting at which Joseph Smith would formally organize the church, the first 5,000 copies of the Book of Mormon are printed in Palmyra, N.Y., by E.B. Grandin. The total cost of the printing is $3,000, initially deferred by a mortgage agreement between Grandin and Martin Harris. In 1831, Harris sold 151 acres of his farm to settle the terms of the agreement. (7)

The Book of Mormon is published, each copy selling for $1.25. Young, a practicing Methodist who has moved to the area near Palmyra with his wife, reads the Book shortly after publication and will be baptized as a Mormon two years later. (8)

[Joseph Smith] The Book of Mormon is first advertised for sale. A few days later Joseph Smith (hereafter Smith) gives Oliver Cowdery (hereafter Cowdery) the brown "seer stone" with which Joseph Smith discovered the gold plates (according to Brigham Young) and translated the Book of Mormon into English (according to Smith's wife Emma, Cowdery's wife Elizabeth, Martin Harris, David Whitmer, Hyrum Smith, and William Smith who witnessed the translation process). Joseph Smith had previously used this seer stone in his family's quest for enchanted treasure. (9)

[Black History] The Book of Mormon is published. The Book uses a dark-skin motif as a sign of sinfulness by the Lamanites, descendants of Israel through Menasseh whom are considered ancestors of contemporary Native American Indians, "The Lord God did cause a skin of blackness to come upon [the Lamanites]", cf. 1 Ne. 5:21.
And their brethren sought to destroy them, therefore they were cursed; and the Lord God set a mark upon them, yea, upon Laman and Lemuel, and also the sons of Ishmael, and Ishmaelitish women.

[Gause, Jesse] Converted to United Society of Believers of Christs Second Appearing (Shakers) by 1830. (5)

Isaac Morley (a cooper and a Campbellite) joins Church. Morley also promoted the concept of community goods and had 50 - 60 people (called "Big Family") living on his farm, and more on a separate piece of property [per Josiah Jones (a non-converted Campbellite)]. (1)

Lyman Wight (a Campbellite and friend of Isaac Morley) baptized. (1)

Stephen Bradies writes, in a book, that he saw the Savior when he was 14. (1)
